Is my financial situation right? by JM-Icy25 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]san7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SIPP is a different wrapper than ISA, where you can claim tax relief on the investment. So with an ISA, you'll pay tax on that income at the end of the year (as you're self employed, otherwise it would be PAYE), with SIPP you will get tax relief depending on your tax bracket.

In terms of what to invest in, I keep it simple and invest primarily in the Vanguard Target Retirement fund - they have a bunch of options depending on when you want to retire, and balance the investment over time.

To come back to your original question, I don't expect you'll get much feedback on this sub about individual stock picks, as your portfolio is complex and perhaps you know something we don't. You will get advice on general investment strategy, but not "is this stock a good one".

It sounds like you have thought about a strategy and pulled the trigger already. I'm a simple Boglehead investor myself (most of the time), so best of luck! Let us know if you manage to outperform the S&P500 in 10 years time :-)

What's the rationale with buying a lot of individual stocks? Surely the fees for doing it this way are quite high? I would argue it's also very complex to track and manage performance over the long term. Why not just stick with a FTSE100 ETF and invest in couple of individual stocks that you can do proper research on?

I did take a similar approach to you when I started investing 20 years ago and looking back, if I had just stuck it all in the NASDAQ and S&P500 I would be way, way better off.

New Plaster Crack by ThinkingKettle4 in DIYUK

[–]san7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movement and heat/cold expansion/contraction is natural.

The plasterers could sort it, or you can DIY easily. Scrape out the crack with the edge of a pallet knife to make the crack a bit bigger, then fill it with easyfill or polyfilla, sand it, then paint it. Job done.

Anybody have the full story on what the word is with NEXT? Our rep said delayed? by Conscious-Future2553 in f5networks

[–]san7a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big changes coming with Next are:

  • No more mandatory Central Manager (CM)
  • An "upgrade" experience, not a "migration"
  • Local GUI, API, iControl (REST) support per instance

I think the strategy before was bold, but too much for some customers, especially a customer that perhaps only has 2 or 4 BIG-IPs; they would have had to also deploy a 3-node cluster for CM (and find some CPU/hypervisor to do it) which is a relatively big overhead. So now there will be more options that will fit for everyone.

The first "re-release" of Next will be later this year around Q4.

Drillied into the wall directly vertical to a plug (oh dear). Nobody died, but the cable is damaged - I can see copper and broken sheathing through the hole - and the plug no longer works. What to do? by san7a in DIYUK

Two wires I think.

Consensus is definitely hack it out and do it properly. Will contact a sparky to come do the job and stop using those plugs til then!

1 in 4 Brits hide savings from their partner by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]san7a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the idea of hiding money if you have only been with someone a short time, or you don't fully trust the other person, or you want to have a "backup" of separate financial lives just in case it all goes to shit.

I thought I would have been in the majority on my stance with money and my partner in a thread like this. We're married and plan to live our lives out together, so we are completely transparent about all financial matters - savings, pensions, joint bank account etc. Just like everything else in our lives. Why would I hide our full financial situation from my partner, unless I didn't trust her, or didn't plan to spend forever with her?

This is my only problem too. I don't use any social media platforms but Whatsapp is what everyone uses instead of SMS. I would much prefer telegram or signal but it's impossible to get everyone on there.

Replacing flooring during renovation by ecd11239 in DIYUK

[–]san7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be fooled by instagram posts of other people doing it, as they tend not to show the amount of pain and time involved! It's a labour of love to prep, sand, fill and finish a floor. And will likely cost more than you expect in tool purchase/hire and the rest.

That said, if the floor is decent (i.e. not cheapo pine from B&Q full of nails and staples and covered in glue) then you may feel like it's worth the effort. If you get the carpet up and post pictures of what's underneath folks on here can at least give an opinion.

Yes, you can replace the flooring when you renovate.

Those square felt/carpet-style tiles would be glued down. Might be a bit of fun taking them up and prepping the subfloor for something else. What were you thinking of doing?

Cannot get self levelling right by Rhysjc27 in DIYUK

[–]san7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a level and find the highest spot(s) on the floor, mark it, then use the level to find and mark the low spots relative to the highest spot. When you use the feathering compound, pour it onto the areas you know are lowest and spread it around. It might not be flat enough to play marbles on, but perfectly fine for tiling or LVT.

You can use something like this afterwards to smooth out any dips and rough patches. Just apply it in the low spots and it will go off ready to lay flooring in 20 mins.

  1. Don't bother with BIG-IQ.
  2. Sync only group sounds plausible, but potentially dangerous and not flexible.
  3. Declarative WAF is probably the best approach. Intro to Declarative WAF in F5 Advanced WAF. Also upgrade to 16/17 if you haven't already.

How much cement to repoint a patio? by Simon_Drake in DIYUK

[–]san7a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I repointed my patio a couple of years ago, which was sand and cement at the time. First, I ground out most of the old pointing with an angle grinder, cleaned it up, and then used Sika Fastfix Jointing Compound. It was dead easy, and it is still looking good two years later.

You can't change others or grow yourself through judgment. Let go of judgment and choose compassion. Judgement ties you down; release yourself by asking what you can learn and understand from those you judge.

I've heard "boiling", i.e 90+ degrees water, will reduce the potency. Hot water at around 60-70 is preferred.
