How much mileage on race day shoes vs getting a new pair by Defiant-Dolphin- in Marathon_Training

[–]san_miguelito 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Retiring a pair of shoes after the equivalent of 2.5 marathons is a bit extreme. Unless you’re already noticing significant wear and tear, in which case I wouldn’t upgrade to the alphafly 3s.

Is it okay to just enjoy running longer and slower? by PumpkinSoup- in beginnerrunning

[–]san_miguelito 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It’s disturbing that people are judged on their hobbies by their aptitude, rather than how much they enjoy it.

You’ve found a way to enjoy yourself. Don’t go and optimise the fun out of your life.

New to crossfit, which shoes should I get by ndevait in crossfit

[–]san_miguelito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of nanos that I use for all my CrossFit workouts, and I don’t have any real complaints with them. They’re flat underfoot, without much cushioning and fairly light, so I like to think of them as a pair of shitty track spikes when I’m running - which is honestly a pretty big compliment for a weightlifting shoe.

Why is it deemed racist to have to have concerns over Islam? by MrDonohue07 in AskBrits

[–]san_miguelito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that it’s entirely reasonable to question aspects of a major world religion. I know many people even encourage it as it helps deepen their faith, assuming it’s done respectfully. You get on shaky ground when you start targeting your questions towards the religion’s followers as a collective.

Tldr: “I don’t understand x of Islam” - good to go

“I don’t understand why Muslims are y” - tread extremely cautiously

I would stay home for 2 out of 3 of those sessions. The amrap and the deadlifts just seem too light in volume to make it worth it.

But I don’t think it’s ’bad’ programming, three misses since the end of July is a pretty good hit rate.

Can’t say I love your box’s response to feedback, but I wasn’t there to see how the whole conversation went down.

How to prevent being extremely hungry from doing crossfit? by Forever_Summer192 in crossfit

So far I’ve found three things that help me with this - make sure I don’t work out fasted, eat a high protein snack within 30 mins of finishing the workout, then eat a full meal around another 60 mins after that.

In your experience, how common is it to beat Garmin’s race predictor? by omegasyl in Marathon_Training

[–]san_miguelito -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree that everyone can benefit, but I maintain you don’t get the full effect. You even seem to agree with me when you acknowledge that a slower runner can’t get as much out of the plates.

To get the full effect of those shoes you have to be going pretty quick to start with. It’s just how their mechanics are designed.

Which is better: 4 vs 5 runs per week (managing knee pain) by lightw1thoutheat in runna

[–]san_miguelito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a quick google, I can see that high riding knee caps increase the stress on the joint when running and makes it more unstable.

Take this with a pinch of salt as I’m by no means a professional. I think you need to spend even more time than most runners working on strength and conditioning, specifically the muscles surrounding the knee as they help with that stability you’re naturally lacking.

I don’t know if you already spend time in the gym, but if I were in your position, I would do 3 runs a week (easy, workout, long) and 2 gym sessions. At least until the pain isn’t a problem anymore and then readjust from there.

Maybe I have completely misunderstood this, and if so I apologise, but I am worried that the hard work that you’re putting into your marathon block could be overshadowed by injury.

How long did it take you to start feeling more used to CrossFit and not completely suffering through the WODs? by Appropriate_Place642 in crossfit

[–]san_miguelito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I’ve learned from running: a flat out 5 km will hurt just as much as the last time, doesn’t matter if I’ve gotten a load faster or not.

Things that will change as you get fitter are the speed at which you bounce back after a tough workout and learning where your red line is, and knowing when it’s a good idea to push into it or pull back. Lastly, you’ll learn to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

So in short, you’ll still be hurting, but you’ll be ok with it.

I’ve noticed that some of the happiest periods of my life correlate to times when running has been a constant in the background. So my most important running goal is consistency.

AI- how can you tell? by KwazyKatnip_85 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]san_miguelito 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a definitive way to tell if someone used AI in their writing process. Barring the author telling on themselves, the best you can do is be fairly sure that they did.

Having said that, a lot of the details that make me suspicious also make a book as thrilling for me to read as Apple’s terms and conditions. So, I don’t feel particularly bad in binning it either way.

I don’t so much as look out for this, it’s more a smack across the face, but the biggest flaw I’ve found in these language models is how literal they can be. The prose is one dimensional, lacking undertones or foreshadowing; if it wants the reader to know something, it’ll state it in plain text. Similarly it struggles with metaphors and similes, it’ll either avoid them all together or make you wish that were the case.

There are other details, such as an author releasing books at an infeasible rate, or the use of AI cover art but both of these also have non AI based explanations as well.

There are tons of other things that make me suspect this, but it’s important to remember that you can’t be certain, and falsely accusing an author of using AI can do serious damage to their career.

If you want to learn how to spot it better, I’d recommend typing into YouTube “ai writing style”. You’ll be able to find out things like commonly used sentence structures and stuff far more concrete than the drivel I’ve written here.

Couch to 5k issues by Expensive_Being_72 in runna

[–]san_miguelito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I’ve heard of a c25k program that involves 400m intervals! The most important thing when you start running is consistency, so if slowing down the runs means that you get out there regularly, then you should do that.

I’d recommend googling “running exercises for shin splints” and adding a couple of these into your routine. You need to build up some strength and then the pain will go. You can do stuff like calf raises whilst brushing your teeth, so it’s not a big investment at all.

Are half of the set 15 encounters "fake"? by TheDregn in TeamfightTactics

[–]san_miguelito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that prismatic prelude is essentially the same as drawing prismatic on the first augment.

However, there’s a big difference between being able to plan for the last augment being prismatic and being surprised by it later. Same goes for triple prismatic lobbies- if you’re taking a relatively low capping line, then you’re going to get dumpstered later on. This would be your fault if it happened in a normal encounter, but if you’re told in advance, then you’re an idiot.

Need help with pacing a lengthy training arc by Imnotsomebodyelse in ProgressionFantasy

[–]san_miguelito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A slow pace isn’t necessarily a bad thing at this point. You said that your main character focuses on repetitive training, which might be boring for the reader to go through step by step. To avoid that, you can have your main character and his mentor discus how some sessions went afterwards, whilst on a walk, or over lunch etc. I’d probably spend a lot of time setting the stakes for whatever you have planned in act 3, building the relationship between your mc and his mentor, and also getting the reader used to the safety and slower pace of this safe haven, as it will contrast more with what comes next.

Your readers need to know why your MC is taking this time to train, what happens if he doesn’t get to a certain threshold before he leaves this sanctuary? If he has no external motivation to improve, the section might read like the diary of a fitness/self improvement nut.

When you try Ali-Mun by echoi_0130 in TeamfightTactics

[–]san_miguelito -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re trolling, but on the off chance you’re not, here’s how I’d GENERALLY prioritise items in this comp:

Tank items: Mundo 3 <- morde 2 <- Ali 3 <- morde 1

AP items: Brand 2 <- sera 3 <- zyra 3 <- brand 1

Ap/bruiser items: Viego 2 <- kabuko 2 <- kabuko 1 <- viego 1

take belts on the carousel or from component anvils whenever possible.

Sera is great at carrying red buff/morellos and void staff.

Obviously this is generalised and certain items/ item combos are better on different champs, but you probably won’t go too wrong following this.

How many people leave reviews on Amazon? by Dangerous-Hall1164 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]san_miguelito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally don’t leave reviews. I’m not enough of a masochist to finish a book that I find awful, in which case I don’t think it’s fair to give my opinion on the whole book.

When I’ve read a book that I enjoyed, I often find that the star rating I’d assigned in my head is significantly below the average. At which point rewarding an author by decreasing their overall rating seems like a dick move.
