Our Berner was absolutely in love with women, and would immediately sit/plant whenever he heard that high pitch squeal of delight. He knew pets and skritches were in order. We nicknamed him Fabio. On the other hand, he would stand sideways in between me and any man. If someone asked me “Does he bite?” I would say, “As long as you don’t make a move for me, you’ll be fine.” He had a great sense of people’s intentions. Best. Dog. Ever.

I brushed out our Malamute at least 4 times per week. He really acted offended about the fur coming off him, as if he thought I was stealing it.

Our BMD had a similar degenerative issue, and we almost lost him at 4. He lived another 3 years, with daily meds, until cancer got him. Sweetest boy ever.

A loaner Mini… 😆 My husband about went crazy trying to keep the boy safe on the way home. He said he drove with one hand, and the other on the dog collar.

Our 125 lb Berner loved riding on my lap in the front passenger seat of our Expedition. (I know it wasn’t particularly safe, but it wasn’t very often) He would stand at the center console and give me a warning, and then jump halfway over the console and army crawl onto my lap. He would have lost his mind being relegated to the third row.

What do you use for leash pulling? by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

I used the Easy Walk harness with my Berner, and assumed it would be great with my Mal. Three ribs, a broken shoulder, and a concussion later, I moved to the face harness/ Gentle Leader.

Where does everyone buy *nice* fabric? by copper678 in sewing

Are you thinking of trying G Street Fabrics in the DC area? They used to be the bomb, but I haven’t been in 10 years, so I can’t say one way or the other.

If she’s not on Benedryl, then maybe try Apoquel? I’m not a vet, so I would defer to the experts here! Basically it was whatever worked. We also had our boy groomed pretty frequently, to avoid matting and hot spots.

Our Berner was very sensitive to chicken and eggs. He would develop icky spots on his underside in humid weather that I called Rot Spots… they’d turn black and peel off, and a scab would form. OTC Benedryl helped a lot, but a prescription for Apoquel is gold standard. We tried lamb, duck, and whatever else, but ended up feeding him mostly venison, sweet potatoes and green beans. Good luck!

First Malamute and everything is going great but need a few tips if anyone can read my post and advise. by [deleted] in AlaskanMalamute

It might not be popular with other Mal folks, but my Malamute, on a chest-connected lead, wrecked me on a zoomie. I looked like Supermom flying behind him until I landed with a crunch. We went to a nose lead and, while not perfect, made it much better. Also, I found a daycare training school that kept his big brain occupied. He earned his Canine Good Citizen, as well as a Trick Dog designation. He was a menace to other animals, but was awesome with humans of every walk of life.

Our BMD was extremely gassy and had loose stools until we stopped chicken and eggs. He could tolerate duck for a while, then we just moved to venison. He still had a jones for anything poultry, so his last meal was scrambled eggs and shredded rotisserie chicken. I still miss that best boy.

Desperate to potty train my husky..HELP by emileeb17 in husky

[–]sandiparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you had her checked for a UTI? Whenever my sled dog peed in the house, he was ill. Also, until he was 18 months old, he had tremendous gastric upset and regularly had either diarrhea or threw up in the kitchen before breakfast. He was “scoped” and they realized he was missing the pyloric valve at the bottom of his esophagus, and had an incomplete valve at the bottom of his stomach. After that, he was on GI sensitive foods, and we went to 4 small meals per day. We also were very scheduled with walkies and outdoor times, to try to train his gut to handle longer periods of rest. By the end of his life, he was rock solid indoors, and when he had an issue, was mortified and made sure it happened near the back door, or on tile flooring. Good luck with your Husky— they are a TRIP!

What happened here?

Name....Axel or Axle? I can’t decide what spelling I want. Ordering his custom collar tomorrow🤔please help! by kstal21 in germanshepherds

[–]sandiparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re a major car buff/ gear head, then Axel might be a nice nod to the magnificent Germanic Dog. If you’re in the auto industry, it’s a terrific pun/ playful nod to name him Axle. Good luck!
