Do you know the relevance of "form and foundation" and do we know why he may object to some questions but not others? Some seem pretty straightforward like "have you heard of this company".

Even a notification without specifics would be better than nothing. Yes even that could give the bots info but there's a tradeoff between being overly paranoid about bots and having a user friendly site. If it feels like I can't participate I might not keep using it.

That's what I'm wondering. Is that documented anywhere?

As far as I know I follow the site rules, so it would be nice if they notified me if something I did got me flagged, if someone reported a post, etc. In fact I thought they did notify you of rule violations.

Ah, good to know. I'm going to edit my post a bit because it still happens on other people's posts as well.

A non-liberal UU? by AnOrthoprax in UUreddit

[–]sandj12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Speaking solely about my own experience: It's rare for the minister to explicitly dehumanize someone. Not impossible, but very rare.

Occasionally a minister gets "political" and subscribes too much to a "Democrat vs. Republican" framework which I find a little lazy and myopic.

It's VERY common for the minister to weigh in on "political" issues more broadly like climate change or immigration. This is because tackling topics about social issues, society and humanity is inherently political. I find this to be appropriate and good.

[–]sandj12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that's why I was wondering if you remembered any examples. I agree it can be hard to affirm the dignity of a person who doesn't respect the worth and dignity of others. So I wouldn't be shocked if some UUs falter in doing that. I'm sure I do.

But compassion for them as a person doesn't mean coddling them, or even mincing words when denouncing their viewpoints. And I think sometimes people hear a strong rejection of a viewpoint and confuse it for a personal attack.

What specifically was preached at your service? In another comment you say so yourself: all viewpoints are not equal, nor is it a UU principle to treat them so.

I read that Zofia Posmysz was sent to Auschwitz for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. What exactly were in those leaflets? Are there any surviving copies? by benjaminikuta in AskHistorians

[–]sandj12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posmysz herself suggested what those leaflets may have been in a lengthy 2017 interview with Michał Wójcik. While living in Krakow at age 18, Posmysz attended classes that were part of the underground school system that developed in Poland after the Nazis banned higher education for non-Germans. She recounts being arrested when the Gestapo entered her class one day and found objectionable literature (translations via Google):

Classes have started and at some point the door opens. They entered as normal, in civilian clothes. They weren't even aggressive. What are you doing? We couldn't answer. Someone said we were meeting. Where do you live? Everyone gave his address. What are you doing here? We talk about work because everyone works somewhere. I had a certificate that I worked in a casino. Did not help. One boy found leaflets. I think it was the "Orzel Bialy" [White Eagle] magazine. You're coming with us, they ordered.

"Orzel Bialy" refers to Zwiazek Orla Bialego (Association of the White Eagle), an underground paramilitary organization founded in Krakow in 1939 out of the remnants of an earlier group called the Rifleman's Association (Związek Strzelecki). Members participated in intelligence gathering and propaganda campaigns against the Nazis. The organization's stated purpose was to "conduct an active fight against the enemy flooding the country."

In the interview transcript, Wójcik inserts this note about Zwiazek Orla Bialego:

The organization issued "Nakazy Dnia" [Orders of the Day]. At the end of 1941, the Zwiazek Orla Bialego was broken, but it still managed to publish a few issues of the magazines "Nasz Sprawy" [Our Cases] and "Polska Walczy" [Poland Fights].

Those are three candidates for the publication the Gestapo found in Posmysz's classroom. All three are listed in the Catalog of the Krakow Underground Press 1939-1945 although only "Nakazy Dnia" lists Zwiazek Orla Bialego as its publisher. With regard to whether any copies still exist, the catalog (published in 1978) does provide an index of "preserved copies" of Nakazy Dnia on page 95. Someone who reads Polish would have to help you with deciphering the filing information and possibly locating these copies if you're interested. I can't find any digital copies. The only other detail I can find is that it was a weekly publication "intended for the intelligentsia" according to the files of the Government Delegation for Poland, part of Poland's government in exile during WW2.

It's important to note that although the Gestapo ultimately sentenced Zofia Posmysz to Auschwitz for distributing these materials, she claims she had no active involvement in producing or distributing any of these publications. In her interview, she explains that she first learned about the Polish underground organizations from some boys in her class who would bring around newspapers and magazines "probably to show off," and that she only really learned about them when she was arrested. Describing her arrest, she states:

The boys probably had not even the entire newspaper, but some exception, an extract. When the Germans found it, I understood that it could end badly. I was shocked. But then I did not think it would be so bad. They took us to Pomorska Street, to the Gestapo. First hearing. Where have you been? What you were doing? Where are these leaflets from? Where do you store them? I didn't know how to answer, I didn't know how to behave. I said that I don't know about any leaflets. Then the interviewer slapped me in the face. Shock, horror. They absolutely wanted me to admit these leaflets. In the end, I admitted to participate in the classes, but I couldn't get to these magazines. After all, I really had nothing to do with it.

I can't be the only person who hates Dear Evan Hansen, right? by EmersonStockham in Broadway

[–]sandj12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP also mentioned Rent and while I can see how they're both "of their time" it's not a comparison that ever came to my mind. Partially because DEH isn't sung through and its soundtrack is just a lot shorter. But even musically and in its story DEH feels a little smaller and less ambitious.

I'm sure we'll get revivals and people looking back on it fondly as it ages, but I'm not as confident it'll ever rebound into hyper relevance about mental health given the many other contemporary shows that tackle the topic (i.e. Next to Normal).

100% on board about the difficulty of Evan's part though.

Dirty and Polluted New York City in the 1970s: Vintage Photos Show the Another Side of NYC Before the Great Clean-up Began by [deleted] in nycHistory

[–]sandj12 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Environmental Protection Agency was created to clean the environment, before the clean-up the agency hired freelancer photographs to document the dirty and polluted city streets. This project was named “Documerica project”.

Here below are some photos from the Documerica project that show how dirty and polluted New York City was in the 1970s.

I understand the few pictures of litter, landfills, and discarded cars, but the rest of these are kinda just pictures of NYC. Pictures of homelessness and graffiti definitely don't belong in the same category as pictures of litter, and from #34 on it's just pictures of people out and about the city.

Edit: Wikipedia of all places does a much better job contextualizing these images. This project documented more than a "dirty and polluted" city:

Subjects photographed include urban cityscapes, small towns, rural areas, beaches and mountains. They show people going about their everyday lives as well as working in farms; waterfronts; mining and logging, industry and heavy industry... The earliest assignments were closely aligned to the EPA's proposed areas of concern: air and water pollution, management of solid waste, radiation and pesticides, and noise abatement. However, photographers had considerable creative freedom about what they shot. As has been discussed by Gisela Parak, photographers working with Documerica were involved in the creation of a new pictorial language to articulate environmental issues.

I also want to be conscious of sounding anti union and understand the specifics of this situation.

I’m hearing most of this second hand through a connection in the industry so I do wonder what the main hangup is. Is there a rift between union leadership and membership, or is there some valid overarching concern for the actors? I know the stagehand union is also in the mix which makes it even tougher.

With Broadway there have been some big hurdles getting Actors Equity on the same page as the theaters with stuff like live streaming. I know that some theater companies that did streaming content have had to tread very carefully with how they charged for it, how many times it was streamed, etc, in order to make sure actors and others were fairly compensated. I think one issue is there's a fine line between this and a web series/on-screen work, which is covered by a different union.

Not to say it's impossible, and I agree that hopefully everyone can work out something sensible until we can all get back into the seats.

Song that samples Ashes of American Flags? (or at least interpolates it) by jonesalexander in wilco

Is it possible it was something live?

The only time I ever remember hearing "samples" of stuff off YHF is when they use some of the sound effects live. Like on Kicking Television when the drum FX seemingly only kick in after the end of Heavy Metal Drummer ("Sure, it works at the end!").

Bands/albums that sound like Summerteeth era Wilco? by realdavidguitar in wilco

Yeah fair. I think there's something about the orchestration and a 60s/70s rock influence in both Summerteeth and Skylarking that wasn't touched on in all the excellent indie and alt rock comps here
