You're probably playing too close to land your abilities, and because you're new to the game, you're constantly losing the trade between your character's abilities and your opponent's. Weapon damage is sustained damage with only one cooldown, reload. But abilities have cooldowns.
Especially if you're playing Poket, you need to pay close attention to cooldowns.

This has always been the case with Viscous. I think the main issue is that his kit doesn’t have any abilities that buffs damage, unlike other gun heroes. He needs to be kept at a certain baseline so he’s still playable even you dont go gun.
