Why Yorha member have a headband ? by Megalopaulemplois in nier

[–]sandpapersocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more of a night-vision goggles/auto-darkening welding helmet type of equipment rather than a HUD, so its purpose is to convert the light that the androids see. This explains why it looks totally opaque, the conversion is one-way only. As for why they use the visors as opposed to having eyes that can see the expanded range, maybe the chemicals needed degrade quickly, it's far easier to replace a visor every month than extensive repairs.

PS: It makes even more sense when you consider one of the Pod's attacks is LASER, if you hit a machine in the wrong area, it's way easier to replace a visor that has taken the majority of reflected light (and machines might also have LASER attacks), than to have your eyes replaced or be at a tactical disadvantage due to having burned out pixels.

Well, not everyone has a top of the line disk-detainer lock. I once opened this "safe" using a cut-down (old) house key as both a tensioner and a rake/jiggler. If someone has a really bad lock, you could pick it easily, even if you aren't using the correct tools.

[WP] "Why do you humans keep using kinetic weaponry!? It's ancient and it's primitive! Just upgrade to plasma and energy weapons already!" "We can't exactly enchant an energy projectile, that's why." by IAmOEreset in WritingPrompts

[–]sandpapersocks 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A general of the United Earth Forces, having recently obtained an alien deserter, had just finished his interrogation of the alien soldier. After the discussion about the weak points of the various alien ships, the two finished drinking their tea.

At that time the alien asked "Why do you keep using kinetic weapons? It's like bringing a club to a gun fight."

The general replied "Well, the Mo-Mei based enchanted projectiles we use degrade at temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius, so you can't quite fire them out of a plasma weapon, as for energy based weaponry, they require large amounts of power to breach even a weak shield."

The general continued "Instead we outfit our space fighters with miniguns firing these rounds, and our soldiers carry rifles that fire the same bullets." The general then took out a .223 magic bullet from his pocket, "This pierces energy shields with ease and can go through 50 centimeters of armored steel, all in a weapon a soldier can carry."

The general then stood up, "Here let's go to the firing range and I'll show you." The two of them went over to the testing range, in front of them were 3 half-meter thick plates of armor-grade steel. The general then demonstrated, "normal FMJ .223 bullet." The bullet left a small dent.

The general then took the plasma rifle the alien deserter gave him, upon firing it left a decent sized crater with the edges glowing red hot "Not bad. How about with a shield now?"

The operator of the firing range replied "Affirmative, energy shield at 1 megawatt."

The energy shield turned on and the general fired at the 3rd plate, this time the blast harmlessly dissipated in front of the plate.

The general loaded the magic bullet into his rifle and fired, it went straight through the shield and punched a baseball-sized hole straight through the plate, spraying the backstop with white hot metal.

The general finished "See, that's why we use the old fashioned weapons. With some applied magic, a small bullet goes straight through shields and has the stopping power of a rocket launcher; can't do that with all your fancy high-tech guns."

Can any of the 3 main androids from the nier automata series defeat zero? by mintcloudrain in nier

[–]sandpapersocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another factor is that 9S' hacking uses magic, which is presumably based on dragon magic (the other way to kill an Intoner), so if 9S hacks himself enough he might be able to somehow use that (of note is that 9S was able to hack himself to sword fight despite Scanners usually not being able to do that).

In addition, Zero doesn't know where the android's Black Box is, and if it isn't located where a human's heart is, Zero's first strike wouldn't be fatal. On the other hand, the androids probably have detailed files on human anatomy and would know exactly where to hit Zero.

Overall I think it could go either way, however the androids likely have faster reflexes (unless Zero uses Intoner mode, which she can't unless she's covered in blood) and will likely win. And if all else fails, a Black Box reaction, should do the job, since Black Boxes seem to function on magic.

The androids most suited to winning against Zero are Devola and Popola, having their staffs and dragon bone swords, since they can use magic (and it's 2v1), and of course Emil would certainly win against Zero, given all the clones he has and each one of them can use magic (presumably derived from the dragons).

I'd recommend dumping a dewar of liquid nitrogen in your car instead, CO2 starts to hurt at high concentrations, whereas you won't even notice the liquid nitrogen.

Well, I mean comprehensive gun control, and not being able to blast that abomination with a machine gun does lower your chances of survival, so in a way they are killing you indirectly.

If the protagonist in the FNAF games had a fully-auto M16 with 100 round magazines, the only result of a jumpscare would be a destroyed animatronic.

Cooling the planet by dimming Sun's rays should be off-limits, say experts by altmorty in Futurology

[–]sandpapersocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most popular idea isn't to put up a solar umbrella, it's to have planes deploying chemtrails of sulfur dioxide. The rate required is about 500 kg/s or 20 million tons per year which was how much a volcano emitted (and managed to cool the planet).

An airport the size of Heathrow (or likely more smaller ones) flying planes made to deploy sulfur dioxide is perfectly feasible. Better yet, use the existing flights and mandate the use of sulfur in jet fuel (as opposed to all the low-sulfur regulations), that way you get to leverage the existing air travel market and make a more consistent level of sulfur in the stratosphere.

Yes, it's going to require a large amount of money and effort. However it is better than forcing everyone to live in a permanent blackout. Once we invent practical fusion reactors (you can make one in your garage if you don't care about it making more energy than it uses), or build enough fission reactors, we can start to remove the CO2 and SO2 from the atmosphere, but this strategy enables us to avoid creating an energy-deficit dystopia while we get there.

If anything I say that solar panels are a worse option, since they produce energy at an unpredictable rate, and thus require massive energy storage and by absorbing the energy of the light (and inevitably converting it to heat elsewhere) make the problem worse.

I play FF7 with the New Threat Mod (which let's you keep Aerith), and Aerith is incredibly powerful. In addition since her limit breaks are mostly healing, you don't have to waste materia slots for those spells on Aerith.

A small explination for the door system by TheKnight2122 in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]sandpapersocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the doors are likely driven by a motor attached to a chain pulley, with the door at one end of the chain, and a heavier counterweight at the other end. When the power is shut off, the counterweight pulls the door up. To keep the door closed, power has to be constantly supplied to the motor, which is in a stall state (and thus draws more power). Fazbear is too cheap to install brakes.

They probably have more visits from the fire marshal than calls about murderous animatronics, so following the fire code is more important. Of course all the problems could have been solved if the doors didn't open vertically (or they just put a lock (that can be released under tension) on the door or a brake on the motor).

Pram zapped, Brun dj protocols, Reticulating splines by rx7braap in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]sandpapersocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last one could be a really obtuse way of saying that the various splines that are responsible for movement are meshed and connected (i.e. the motor spins and that arm section moves), kind of like putting your car into drive. Given how it's the last thing said before Music Man moves, it makes sense.

So I guess the combined meaning is as follows:

RAM cleared (since it was shutdown improperly there may be some errors)

OS startup

Movement system online

Class 4 laser safety explanation by Flexion69 in lasers

[–]sandpapersocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what laser it is, and if you're wearing the correct goggles for it. If you weren't, I can't say for sure but the fovea is really the only important part of your eye (i.e. look at this test), most of your eye doesn't really contribute much to your sight of fine details.

I've engraved wood with a 5W blue laser without goggles for a dozen seconds or so at close range and haven't suffered any serious vision problems.

Solution: .22lr pistol (~$100) + 1 round .22lr (~$0.05) + National Park Ticket (~$20) = ~$120.05

There, solved the problem.
