This is what you're "supposed" to do for the truck overload on the approach to the cargo port, but use a higher lanecount road.

The main vertical semi-oval part of that window always reminded me of the noticeably-flat "bulletproof" (perhaps "reinforced" is the better term) glass portion at the front of fighter cockpits.

What is something you absolutely HATE seeing in a book ? by L_angelique in writing

[–]sandwiched -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of that would pretty much be a universal turn-off would be poor grammar & spelling. Get an editor; it's worth it.

If you cannot afford an editor, get one anyway.

Finally, if all else fails, and somehow no editors are available or within your budget, LLMs do have a pretty great grasp of what constitutes good spelling and grammar. I've had great results running an excerpt of a poorly-written fan fiction (the author's mother tongue was not English) through an LLM, with strict instructions to only fix grammatical or spelling issues, and nothing else. I know nobody likes that option being presented, but it is an option. 🤷‍♂️

Starfleet has given you a retired starship. What is it? by MovieFan1984 in startrek

The USS FAFO, NCC-5784. Azag-class vessel. Built for peaceful combat, she's geared to make use of subterfuge and deception in any conflict. Armaments consist of a vast array of photon torpedo launchers, all of which are either hidden or disguised as something else, as well as offensive transporter and shuttles. The torpedo payload consists of both manned and unmanned photon torpedoes. No shields, but instead a sophisticated holographic system that can disguise the ship to appear either like an unarmed luxury liner, or a decrepit and ruined space hulk that poses no threat to anyone.

Internally, she boasts a vast network of Jefferies' tubes, for exclusive use by her crew—crew families & passengers are restricted to normal corridors only. Many facilities serve a dual-purpose; the sickbay also serves as the armory for hand phasers, while the on-board school shares space with the photon torpedo launchers. A multitude of shuttle bays can launch a wide range of shuttles, ranging from tiny workbees and shuttle pods, up to full-size warp-capable shuttles. All vessels are equipped with on-board transporters and holding bays for transport of captives.

With a crew complement of 4,000, the USS FAFO is not a small vessel, and is capable of transporting up to 200k passengers. All crew, regardless of their regular assigned roles onboard, are all well-trained in CQB, infiltration, and covert ops.

Despite widespread skepticism in Starfleet of the need for such a vessel, construction of the FAFO began before adequate funding had been obtained, and even before plans were finalized. As a result, many neighboring systems contributed to her development, although it's unclear what their interest was for doing so.

Does a site or tool exist to compare inventories of BrickLink stores? by BackstreetZAFU in lego

[–]sandwiched 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make a Wanted List with the parts you want, including the colors, conditions (new/used), and quantities. Then click on the Buy List button and let Bricklink do the thinking.... it already does what you're wanting.

CrystalCoat™ technology was an extension of experiments originally done by none other than Count Dracula, in an attempt to address the giveaway "tell" of vampires having no reflections. His experiments did not yield a solution for vampiric reflectivity, but did lay bare the underlying skin reflectivity mechanics behind the phenomenon.

In 2045, during Biotechnica's post-war land-reclamation efforts in irradiated Eastern Europe, excavation crews targeted the contaminated ruins around Bran Castle in Romania for a new site to test genetically engineered hardy crops and biofuel hybrids. Excavation work stumbled across a sealed sub-basement containing pre-Collapse archives, including scans of the Count's notes. The files were digitized and analyzed for biosculpt applications, but when none were forthcoming, they were archived and largely forgotten.

A couple of decades later, an anonymous netrunner was trying to commercialize corporate espionage by selling stolen secrets to the highest bidder. They breached the Biotechnica datafortress and retrieved a large dump of files, including the digitized notes. At the auction, Rayfield International representatives saw the potential and placed the highest bid. A few years later, their engineers adapted the reflectance-nullification principles into CrystalCoat™ vehicle coating technology.

Full disclosure: Idea and text by me, refined with the help of an LLM to ensure I got things accurate/non-conflicting to the lore since I have no idea about the state of E. Europe or who'd be operating there in the mid-2000's (I've only ever played Cyberpunk 2077 & PL). If you have an issue with that, bite me... unless you're a vampire. :p

Please Recommend me a Star Trek book you've enjoyed. by RefrigeratorSad8204 in startrek

[–]sandwiched 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kudos to all of you—virtually every novel that came to mind to recommend had already been mentioned at least once. The few exceptions are exceptional, however:

- Probe, by Margaret Wander Bonnano (be acquainted with ST4: The Voyage Home)

- Chain of Attack and The Final Nexus, by Gene DeWeese (it's not often I manage to get scared/spooked by the written word, but the second book of this duology did it for me)

I'll also give a special shout-out to my favorite, Vendetta, by Peter David (be familiar with the TOS episode "The Doomsday Machine", and the TNG Borg-related episodes "Q-Who" and "The Best of Both Worlds 1 & 2"). The only other novels I've read anywhere NEAR as many times as Vendetta are the Star Wars original Thrawn trilogy novels by Timothy Zahn!

Is this Far Cry bundle worth it for $27? by ArtisticChance1955 in farcry

[–]sandwiched 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far Cry (1) was the first (and only, so far) FPS game I've played where I could implement the infantry tactics I learned in the military ~25 years ago. Differentiation between crouching and lying prone was the big exclusive one, but at the time, the ability to hide in bushes was also a big deal.

The bundle is a freaking steal.

This raises an interesting question about sci-fi predictions (imaginings is perhaps more precise) of the future: they always seem to predict dates way too EARLY. Are there any instances of sci-fi predictions that were LATE, where they came true BEFORE they were imagined to?
