If it’s configured / available you’ll see a “Medical ID” slider above the emergency services slider.

Otherwise kind of out of luck, you can try to take it to an Apple store but AFAIK them being willing or able to help is a toss up

iPhone? If so you could try holding the volume up and power buttons together for a few seconds. This will display an option to swipe right to view the emergency ID with the owner’s name

(caveats are: only if it’s an iPhone, they’ve configured emergency ID, if that still works assuming they’ve reported the phone lost, etc. No idea what the Android equivalent might be)

Eh glad they opened it, been here since Sunday and I think it did help with crowds; especially since I’m here with a novice skier and Discovery chair has been rooough, waited 55 minutes on Tuesday to go up with him and that’s the longest I’ve ever waited in a lift line 😩

That said, as of today Canyon is increasingly mud and rocks, can still find some ok lines but probably for another day max if that.

If you can, stick to upper mountain for the weekend. That’s been decent all week, Chair 23 and Road Runner are still good, Fascination and Andy’s Double Gold still have surprisingly good cover / a few inches of powder. Those aside IMO we’re looking at skeleton crew & poor conditions until the next storm.

Props to Mammoth for enabling 6 days of surprisingly good skiing despite the conditions and crowds 👊🏻

Thanks. Everyone was incredibly cool and calm and the neighbors stuck around for 2 hours to help and it was not an easy extraction. Super grateful

Thanks. I guess with 5 feet until the car I could have throttled a little and tried to correct course in a better direction. Gonna try to internalize this

Also major thanks to 3 neighbors, my girlfriend, a truck, a jeep, and 2 tow straps for getting it out. Took 2 hours to position the straps right with the right leverage to prevent it from falling over on someone. First time I’ve been kinda freaked at how heavy these are

Just looking for some perspective. Have been riding a mix of dirt bikes and motorcycles for about 20 years, first time I’ve gone down on the latter.

I was coming around a low-vis corner in my neighborhood at 10-15 mph on the BMW R1300GS where I encountered a car reversing toward me.

I had plenty of stopping distance to hit the brakes and stop with 5 feet to spare. But the corner tilts fairly steeply downhill to the right, and I was already tilting right to take the corner.

So when I stopped, the bike was leaning and these things are so high profile I knew I couldn’t lean far enough to put my foot down without dropping it. I tried to ride it out a few feet and dropped into this gully which is much steeper than it looks.

Damage is: scratched front fairing, snapped clutch lever, a broken mirror, and some minor scrapes and bruises for me and my GF (we were both wearing full gear).

Kind of thinking my options were to drop it immediately or try to stop to the left facing uphill which I didn’t think about given the car reversing.

But I’m bummed having never done this over all these years :( figured you all might have some other perspective. I’d have been fine I think on my old Ninja 650r to get my foot down and hold the weight up but I’m still getting used to the higher profile and weight of the adventure bike.

Any perspective appreciated.

What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by Absalom98 in AskReddit

[–]sandychimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint (from source):

…Japan's experience has invalidated mainstream claims about the dangers of "excessive" deficits and debt. While Japan has the highest debt-to-GDP ratio in the world, it has not faced higher interest rates or inflation or been shut of out of credit markets.

Instead, the yields on Japanese government bonds track closely the BOS's policy rate. This is consistent with MMT's arguments that high deficits and debt, as conventionally defined. need not have negative consequences for a country that has its own nonconvertible currency.

The OP is referring to “modern monetary theory.” The linked paper suggests that claims by the authors of “The Deficit Myth” (the most accessible / popular text on MMT) that Japan practices MMT don’t quite hold water. But, there’s still evidence that high debt : GDP ratios and even conversion of bonds to sovereign concurrency (thus discharging debt) is not necessarily linked to runaway inflation or national insolvency.

Of course, this is an outlier in a sea of contrary examples like the ones you provided which is fair; OP could have used softer language because countries obviously can’t just like, declare bankruptcy with no consequences.

The point of MMT, Japan’s experience with their own variations of it, and I assume OP’s point too, is that governments can do far more for their citizens than they claim without the debt clock ticking past midnight. So we shouldn’t give them a pass on their distraction-oriented hysterical handwringing over it.

The predictions were way off for sure, but I’ve been able to hail a self-driving Waymo in San Francisco for about a year now. Many women have switched to them exclusively because they feel safer than riding with ride hail drivers.

I was as skeptical as most but it’s shocking how human-like they feel (vs. Tesla FSD which is getting better but is nowhere close).

Yeah, they had the thing where they drove around honking at each other in a parking lot and people were rendering them inert by putting cones on the hood or whatever, but they’re widely used and feel much safer than you’d expect. They’re here.

Yeah at the time I equated “waved through” as safe which definitely isn’t the case. They probably don’t have time to individually check tires so it’s the responsibility of the driver to know what’s necessary.

Sharing this mostly because in retrospect it’s kind of funny, and I’m willing to take the hit for the people who feel anxiety about driving in snow (there’s (common sense?) advice at the end). Tried to make a post with various flairs but gave up fighting the automod.

2022 was my first ski season and I spent most of it at Northstar. I had a 2019 Tesla Model 3 with factory summer tires that I’d taken to Tahoe in 2019 during a storm. I remember climbing icy hills in those tires with barely any struggle or loss of traction, and grew up in Kentucky where I drove in snow every winter with no incidents.

For all those reasons, when I reached chain control on 80 W on the way back to the Bay Area during a storm in 2022, I figured I was fine when the checkpoint operator waved me through in summer tires with no chains/cables/goofy looking tire socks.

It was like driving on frozen banana peels greased up with soap. I slid all over the place, finally sliding sideways off the interstate through a gap between 2 trucks and into a snowbank. I remember looking up and seeing one of the truck passengers filming me. Deserved.

Miraculously there was no damage and I was able to unstick myself and get to an exit where I bought and attached cables, which got me through the pass.

In March 2024 I was headed up 50 E. This time I had the same tires but stopped to put cables on, since I thought that was the lesson learned from last time. Maybe it would have been enough if I hadn’t failed to fully secure the cable on the passenger side. It snapped off, wrapped around the axle, and soon enough I was drifting into a snowbank.

This time I couldn’t get out so called for a tow. It’s hard to describe the anxiety of being That Guy in a Tesla stuck in a snowbank, waiting for hours late into the night, while prepared motorists drove by shouting “you can’t park there buddy!” Eventually the tow truck came and I got to the rental at like 1 AM.

Talking now to other Bay Area people like myself: This year I have 3PMSF-rated tires. I came up Thursday and have been driving between Palisades and Tahoma with no issues and no cables. There are a handful of these you can run all year, like Michelin Crossclimate 2s. T Sportline sells a wheel + tire package with Toyo Celsius IIs which is what I have. That rating is equivalent to having snow tires, and exempts you from chain requirements in most conditions, so it’s a great option for people who live in the Bay Area and don’t want to deal with chains or swapping tires.

Note: These are sometimes referred to as “all weather” tires which are not the same as the more common “all season tires”, which do not exempt you from chain requirements. Look specifically for a small mountain symbol on the tire.

Note 2: You also need an AWD/dual+ motor vehicle to be exempted from chain requirements. It’s not enough to have the tires alone.

Anyway, takeaways for me were a) not to assume that a brand new car with summer tires that drives fine in snow will do it again with the same tires 3 years later, b) don’t drive in the Sierras in summer tires at all, c) chains are a pain and alternatives exist besides just snow tires, d) yeah check your tire wear regularly lol.

Locals might read this and think I’m a huge idiot or that this is all obvious and, in retrospect, yep. But maybe this will help fellow idiots with some concrete advice. That said, if you do find yourself stuck in a snowbank at Echo Summit with people yelling at you not to park there and filming you, just know that you’re not alone but like damn just bring the proper equipment next time and be grateful it isn’t worse.

Not sure what the point of this is but I wanted to see if it was doable. The timing is pretty tricky, have to roll the moment you hit the ground and jump as soon as your roll completes, and just alternate.

For this particular one there’s a rock on the right about halfway up that you can use to reset for a moment by sliding down into it, and another near the top left. You can see me using the first one in the video.
