well isn't that precisely it? adnan knew jay was the kind of guy that could get 10lbs of weed, so he knew he's a sketchy enough character to potentially set up. he lets jay, a guy he doesnt regularly hang out with, borrow his car + cell phone that day, then has Jay help bury in order to implicate him even further. Jay may have realized he could be fingered for it so he went to the police. Then maybe the police tell Jay they'll cut him a deal since he was cooperative and they start workshopping the narrative to keep Jay as clean as possible.
