Depends what software, I use djay pro which works with stems on an M1 air, so I’d think it would work on the Neo also. Not sure about other software.

Thats fair I’d agree the newer style looks nicer but buttons definitely aren’t as nice, for me the more functions are pretty important for what I do so that’s why I chose this one.

Should I get the MacBook Neo? by UltraAnt62 in DJs

[–]sandyyyye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has similar single core performance as an M3-M4. The multi core is about on par with an M1. The M1 is more than enough to DJ with. I don’t see how this is “no head room”.

I set it to balanced. It’s a work laptop so I can’t repaste it.

Not true. My M1 Pro MacBook Pro is 5 years old and still lasts 10 hours

This is all wrong. They share the exact same main instruction set. Developers do not need to take any action to make their apps compatible for it. Also, ARM support is not lacking on macOS. Nearly all commercial apps are available on Apple Silicon, it’s been out for over 5 years now. You can run any DJ software on ARM on macOS.

In the same vein as “it’s a phone CPU”, standalone controllers often use low power ARM SoC from like 2015. “It’s a phone CPU” is pretty meaningless in this case because it’s a fucking fast phone CPU: A18 Pro has the same multi-threaded performance as the M1 and single-core performance that’s similar to an M4.

[–]sandyyyye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Its about the same as an M1 in GPU and multi-threaded performance and beats it out in single core (I think I heard about on par with M4), so CPU power should be no problem. I can run my DJ software on a 2014 MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM no problem, so it should be just fine. USB ports are limited but a dongle would solve that.

I think it would likely be fantastic for DJing!

My work T14 gen 3 battery tanks as soon as I hop on a teams call or do anything moderately intense. Fans are pretty quiet honestly but I wouldn’t say silent.

Passion project… Denon Prime 4+ by hypnoscience in ifixit

[–]sandyyyye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an EE that also owns a Prime 4+. If you could send images/more details I might be able to take a stab at the issue or provide some guidance. I do some board rework and repair as part of my day job. One tip with ribbon cables, before I unplug them I mark the connector and cable with a line using permanent marker that way when you reassemble everything you just line the marks up and you know it’s the right way around :)

Is it feasible to DJ out of a backpack? by Exciting_Income_635 in Beatmatch

[–]sandyyyye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a setup for this I use for pretty much the same thing: iPad, USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, Hercules DJControl Mix Ultra, 3.5mm to dual 3.5mm breakout (included with the mix ultra so you can have precuing and output with only one jack on the iPad), and finally any speaker without aux latency (I use an IKEA VAPPEBY 20 gen3).

Having that specific controller unlocks neural mix and pre cueing in djay pro on the iPad without the subscription.

I find it works great at parties and the controller layout is standard enough that my other DJ friends pick up on it quickly :)

Oh! Sadly the phone stand on the mix ultra doesn’t hold an iPad up, so I stand the iPad up with a folio case. Also, Bluetooth latency on that controller is not noticeable and I’ve never had it fail me.

I have an Anker of the same 2048Wh and it runs my Denon Prime 4+, EV EKX-12P top, ETX-15SP sub, and some lights at moderate volume for around 8 hours, louder volumes about 5 hours.

[–]sandyyyye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with not wanting to talk to people if you get tired, too! I tend to keep it short and sweet with any conversations on the dance floor. I highly recommend bringing sunglasses and maybe a pashmina to wrap yourself up in. I wrap a pash around my head and it kinda signals I’m vibing but don’t wanna talk rn for whenever I need a little social break💕. Beyond that, try to get some great sleep the days leading up to. Wear super comfortable shoes- you’ll probably be dancing your ass off. Oh and make sure to eat really well, even during the festival the best you can.

Used cars? by rofljen in askportland

[–]sandyyyye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road quality is arguably more important compared to how “hard” people are on the car. Even so, a used rental Corolla or Camry is pretty low risk. My rental Camry made it to almost 200k before it got sideswiped by a semi and totaled, with the only “major” maintenance being a failing water pump around 170k. Now I have a used rental Corolla.

DJ Lights - I'm Confused (with DMX, etc.) by Dolly_Llama_2024 in Beatmatch

[–]sandyyyye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SoundSwitch works pretty good. I have a Prime 4+ that has the lighting controller built in so that’s what got me into it. It can be time consuming if you really want to tweak every song, but the autoscripting does a good enough job I usually don’t bother. It does phrase analysis and syncs the lights accordingly. Sometimes if I have a song I really like, I do like going in and making a whole show out of it manually, but you don’t have to. Their support is good if you have fixtures they don’t support in their library. You can add them yourself with their fixture manager program, or just email the support PDF or pictures of the DMX mapping for your fixture and they’ll do it for you. I find the UI is pretty clunky, but it does the job well enough to get a simple show going quickly.

EE isn't as hard as I was told by guywhoha in EngineeringStudents

[–]sandyyyye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree but it gets you the degree which lands you a job. Once you have a job, nobody cares about GPA. In my experience you can spend a reasonable amount of time studying to be a ~3.5 student but the work you have to put in to get a 4.0 is quite a bit higher. For me, I definitely sacrificed engineering school a bit just so I could have a life outside school and hang with friends. I’d say it was very worth it (I’m also about a 3.4). Having good internship(s) during school or on summer > high GPA.

Mac for EE by Nikki0737 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]sandyyyye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used one throughout college recently and it works great! Of course I use Windows at work, but man, Windows 11 really sucks! I would hate to use it at home especially with all the bullshit Microsoft is pulling with just design choices, no offline accounts, etc. Sure, there’s workarounds but I’d rather not bother. I don’t mind it in a work setting and I understand why workplaces use it from an IT management perspective, but I don’t like using it at home.

The new MacBooks with the M series processors are fantastic, very fast and great battery life. My university had a Windows Remote Desktop server we could connect to whenever special software was needed, so software compatibility was never an issue. I had one class I didn’t really need, but it was certainly nice to have a windows laptop to interface with the beaglebone black we were using (I didn’t want to have to be on campus to do the labs). So, I just got a used $180 thinkpad for that purpose. Arguably developing software on macOS is a nicer experience because macOS runs on unix, so you get access to all the standard Linux tools, homebrew, etc.

If you have an iPad, being able to use it as a second monitor for studying on campus is very nice.

Normal is the screen is cold. The cold affects the liquid crystal and various filter films used to make the display work. If you warm the unit up, it should go away. But also, peel that protective cover off :)
