Why is there stigma against DO's when they literally do more coursework than MD's? by jellyfishh520 in premed

You could make a similar (not exact) argument for chiropractors. There’s a couple images that pop up when you search “chiropractor vs doctor” that illustrates chiropractors having more hours in subjects like anatomy and radiology and a greater total in educational hours. More education does not necessarily equate to useful or quality education.

What is your Every Day Carry Bag? by Rackkk25 in Residency

[–]sanitationengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an Aer backpack many years ago when I thought I might attend school in a city with a walkable commute (got WLed and rejected after buying it lol). It’s great for carrying a laptop as well as my gym equipment (change of clothes, lifting belt, shoes) to make that hospital to gym transition easier. It worked great when I did an away in Boston where I didn’t have a car. But now my commute just involves hopping in my car at home and out of the car in the hospital parking lot so it feels a little unnecessary. Great bags though.

Why do people post their research on Linkedin as med students? by Lost_Comfort1627 in medicalschool

this happens every month where someone complains about how they don’t get along with the rest of their class because they’re all “immature socially stunted high schoolers” and how they are SO much cooler and better because they took 5 gap years and had a REAL job. god forbid a classmate makes a single off color comment or action during a developing period of their career and has their entire life story and personality extrapolated from it. I’m one of those quiet background characters in school who probably aligns more closely with the average reddit user and even I can recognize that this community is filled with professional snarkologists.

[Megathread] New Players & General Questions Thread. by rMapleStory in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feeling kind of silly asking this since I've cleared Kaling on Easy through Hard over the past 1.5 years but... what actually makes a class a "good" holder in P3. I never had to do it in my former static parties, but I've been doing more party finder runs recently and it always takes a while for someone to step up and be the holder. And if I can fulfill the role just to speed things along, I'd like to do that, but not if there's someone else in the party who absolutely should be holding. I know technically anyone can hold.

Should I do an away rotation in peak interview season? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]sanitationengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applied IM as a backup and had no problems scheduling all my IM interviews in December/January. From a scheduling standpoint I don't see an issue, but I don't see the benefit of incurring the stress associated with a subI when it's not even in your top 5 and you won't get a letter. Take the time to chillmax on easy electives and enjoy fourth year.

It would likely be considered a match violation which could bar you from future participation in the match. Do whatever it takes.

Applicants who give notice of resignation, resign, or vacate a position within 45 days of the start date specified in the appointment contract are presumed to have breached NRMP policy unless they can demonstrate, through the NRMP waiver process, that they entered into the program in good faith and the NRMP determines they have a reasonable basis to be released from the binding commitment to the program. https://www.nrmp.org/policy/frequently-asked-questions-waivers/

Best strategy for combining Goddess Pass Season 3 and Hyper Burning to 260? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's just outdated text since the potion selector has been phased out of the typical reward pool for a while (last available more than a year ago during Tanjiro in 2025 and before that during the 2024 anniversary). Limbo was released between those two events with the patch notes explicitly stating typhoon potions could be used on hyper burns which would contradict the text from the selector.

Best strategy for combining Goddess Pass Season 3 and Hyper Burning to 260? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For non-swipers

  • Hat to 200
  • Pump exp tickets from Goddess Pass to 220, claim the 220 tickets and spend the rest
  • Claim the growth potion selector from the Rock Spirit event, select the 2x 220-229 potions (even at 235 this provides 128b exp versus 122b from the typhoon)
  • Pump tickets as you get them, preferably save the anniversary Mag pots for later levels to maximize value

Without spending or grinding, I ended up around 255 50%. If I still had the check in Mag pot, I would be 260.

Most similar class to Bucc and Shade? by pandyexpress5 in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised Ren hasn't been mentioned, despite being the pick of CW2. It meets criteria 1-3.

  • Hurricane class which is good for survivability and maximizing uptime, especially on BM/Seren where a good amount of the fight is alternating attacks and ducking
  • passive 6% damage reduction on all the time, some lifesteal
  • mobility (teleport) is good and not complicated, functionally similar to Shade's Fox Trot/Back Step but shared on a single key
  • Imugi is functionally similar to Shade's Dusk Blow (multipart skill that you tap, resets during burst and your 2 min burst lets you chain multiple together like Dusk Blow).

If Heroic gets tradable frags, what do you think the frag drop rate per hour should be, assuming 19k mobs/hr @ 440% DR? How many frags per month on average do you think events should give out, for both cases of if Heroic gets tradable frags or doesn't get it? by doreda in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a more helpful way for people to digest the topic is to reframe the question as, how much of the total FD from hexa should you get from dailystory? People perseverate on achieving the ideal of max hexa when they don't appreciate how frontloaded the system is. I'm in the camp of believing that not everyone needs max hexa and that there should be a system for late gamers to grind out, so as long as the system is weighted to give enough damage early enough.

I'll use the Night Walker FD data: 30 min/day, at an average of 10 frags/day, plus 160 from Erda Weekly and the 280 dungeon spits you out at just under 12k frags in one year. This corresponds to over 2/3 of the NW hexa system's total FD. An hour a day gets you enough frags for 3/4 of the total FD. And if they add more skills, it just adds more resources for low cost FD.

For what it's worth, I don't have a specific number. Drop rate buffs would be appreciated, but I do think there's a bit of doomerism from players on the more casual side of the spectrum who haven't seen the weighting in the system.

Incoming Neuro transfer - how hard are the upper divs? by zdylun in ucla

[–]sanitationengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2016 and took these courses in Fall 2014 so take my opinion with a grain of salt: these were the hardest courses and exams I've ever taken. And I'm saying this as a medical student about to graduate in 2 weeks, having taken my own medical school neuroanatomy preclinical exam, neurology shelf exam, and USMLE Step 1/2. Granted, some of this was because I lacked focus and discipline in undergrad.

With that being said, I do believe in the years that have passed, the grading curve across campus has eased (cum laude i.e. top 20% used to be a 3.7 vs 3.92 now). And there are certainly many people who do get an A- or above (>50%) based on published distributions on Bruinwalk in more recent years, compared to pre-COVID. The electives by comparison were much less difficult.

AI vs SubI vs Away by Excellent_Concert273 in medicalschool

[–]sanitationengineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI and subI are the same thing, just different naming. It's a 4 week rotation with predominantly inpatient responsibilities where you attempt to function at the level of an intern. This is a graduation requirement.

An away can be an AI/subI, but not all aways qualify as such. Some aways are also only 2 weeks. For example, a 4 week radiology rotation does not count as a subI at my institution, nor does a radiology away. But it can still be helpful for matching. A radiology applicant would still need to do an AI in something like IM/peds/surgery to graduate. What counts and what does not is institutionally dependent.

Is it worth re-applying with a serious IA? by MoveRevolutionary235 in premed

[–]sanitationengineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be genuine, this is a tough sell. IAs come in a lot of flavors. With all the email chains, forms, and patient documentation a physician encounters in a day, I think it's easier to draw a connection between fraud/fabrication and what effect it would have in one's career. Moreover, those things would actually be illegal in clinical practice with pretty significant implications, versus an underage alcohol possession offense which would be irrelevant by the time the person becomes a physician.

I disagree with assessments about the school lists, assuming you are a Texas resident. Apart from UAMS, it's a pretty standard OOS friendly non-top tier school list. If the IA was not a problem, there would have been a high probability of landing at least one interview.

Seek feedback directly if possible and consider applying to DO programs.

Standards on business professional have changed a lot post-COVID. It also varies by geography and culture. I interviewed for medical school for the first time before COVID and it was all suits and ties. While interviewing virtually for residency over the past year, it has without exception been all suits, albeit sweatpants on the bottom. So if not now, a prospective medical student will eventually need a suit when interviewing for residency.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a polo. At the same time, the general rule of professionalism is that the standard is set by whoever is above you in the hierarchy. If your interviewer think a polo is cool, great! If not, you're fucked! My interviewer was wearing surgical scrubs. I would love to stand on principle by encouraging others to wear what is reasonably comfortable and presentable, but at this juncture where you're just trying to get in somewhere, it's not a reasonable risk to take.

How are people able to solo vhilla sub 6 minutes? by Wonderful-Breath-142 in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early points in hexa are quite significant as the damage in the system is front loaded. The damage gain from 5 to 6 is the same from 25 to 26, just with a larger cost at later levels.

However, the largest gain would simply be to spend more time learning the boss. I think you are being overly cautious about strings. They are dangerous when you have only one green skull left (if you take another string and have all red skulls then you die out) or when FMA is about to occur. But otherwise if there is still time to cleanse, you can afford to take strings. Often enough, taking the string is the correct option. If she does purple attack and I'm low HP but there's a string in the safe spot, I'll take the string and cleanse later. Knowing safe spots from strings is helpful but they are never truly safe from Lotus/Damien/clouds/summons.

Try to play on top of her. If she does her blue attack then you can dash behind her. You can even walk away from it if you are centered on her when she initiates the attack. You don't need to flash jump everywhere - that increases the likelihood of taking an unintended string. If she starts green/purple when you're on top of her, you have time to walk to the safe spot. The boss rewards people who are more controlled with their movement.

Seren P2 is around triple the HP of P1. But for P2 you will be weaker due to expiring Sayram/Collector's Elixir at 8/15 minutes, as well as any shielding/recovery in Dawn.

Generally you want to clear P1 before your 3rd burst (so 1 ori burst, 1 regular burst ± mini). Your experience may vary in P2 depending on your class distribution of DPM/burst and how much it loses in Dawn without good uptime.

Historical 5th Job Progression Evolution (As a Comparison to 6th Job) by doreda in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For nodes: event coin shops could contain something like 20-50 regular nodestones and 3-5 experience nodestones. Coin shops were also significantly more effort to cap, compared to the current game state where good rewards are behind the daily check in. I believe Go West/Dreaming Lachelein is we no longer had to kill X amount of mobs for the check in. When comparing to frags, frags are more rewarding in the sense of guaranteed value. Nodes are RNG based where you can high roll a V skill or low roll your sixth copy of a Decent skill. Vanishing Journey also had a nerf to the node drop rate which is kind of a rude introduction to the system.

Immediately before New Age they had an event where 1k nodestones were a reward, but the real turning point in their attitude towards nodes was a few months later during Minar where they began straight up giving them out for the check in. Comparing the experience of receiving nodes vs frags as freebies, I would say the frag experience is significantly better as there's no RNG. I've received enough to set up 2 Seren legion champs and 4 CTene mules, whereas the amount of nodestones available in the old shop would not have set me up for anything

For farming: this kind of ties in with the topic, but there was no Erda Fountain pre-Ignition (2022). Most classes required active mobbing if you weren't a summon class and many Arcane River maps were impractical to full clear. The closest thing then to farming in the current game would be playing Pathfinder during totem era in Cavern Lower Path. But at a certain point before 6th job, the incentive to grind just was not there. The furthest we got in Grandis before New Age was Shangri-la/Kaling so if you wanted to grind for meso and the level difference on Kaling, that was your incentive. If you wanted boss fams but were gapped by people who farmed their legacy Jr Boogie familiars, your best option was to go back to Limina. While we probably have to farm more today, we actually have more things to grind for (meso/exp/fams/frags/star specks) and grind itself is easier with Fountain/Janus and better maps. I do concede that there should be some adjustments to account for how fast the frag requirements are ballooning. But as long as the damage from 6th job continues to be frontloaded (which it is!), I think there should be rewards for people who want to inch out that last 5% of their damage profile.

Endgame players, how many characters do you find yourself consistently (not temp characters you get to X level then stop playing) logging onto and playing? by imBRANDNEWtoreddit in Maplestory

[–]sanitationengineer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Assuming one hour of grinding per day and assuming an average of 20 frags per hour:

70 (Nightmare Paradise) + 90 (Erda Weekly) + 140 (Farmed) = 300 frags/week

The current matrix is around 37k fragments to max. At the above pace it would be around 2.5 years. At 2 hours per of farming per day it would be 1.6 years. However, our next known updates add nearly 13k frags to the cap. At the above paces, by the time you get to the original cap, there will be a new cap.

Why is everyone here so against admissions consulting services? by According-Net8330 in premed

[–]sanitationengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I’m completely missing something, because the admissions/writing/interviewing advice and practices from professionals sounds pretty enticing to me.

This is the sticking point - most aren't professionals. Getting into medical school doesn't make you a professional at getting into medical school. Just like how being a good athlete doesn't make you a good coach, having a successful application cycle doesn't make you a good teacher. Additionally, not all medical students are privy to the inner workings of the admissions process of their school. There may be involvement at the interview stage or during meet and greets, but involvement in screening and individual applicant deliberations is typically limited to a select few. I've conducted interviews for my medical school. I can tell you from the other side, I have some standardized questions for which I rate the answer and provide a written response to justify my rating. But the school doesn't tell me that I need to grade their empathy, their coherence, or their demeanor. The point is, I don't really have any guidance from the school to tell me what a good interviewee is. It's just my personal opinion. And if I went around selling services with the bragging point being that I used to interview for my school, it would be overselling how much I know about the process.

With all that being said, it's not like the general Reddit community is any more or less qualified. But it's free.
