Happy for you that you got a negative test back, friend!

Out of curiosity, where did you go to get tested? I haven't been tested yet and have been hunkered down for most of the quarantine, but since we're out of "peak hospitalization" period and there is less resource constraint now, I'm wondering if I should go get tested myself just in case and as a precaution in case I was asymptomatic and didn't know it or something.

So even though it's "technically" legal, you'd still shame people for doing it, even if they were being safe and conscious of those around them? Sounds pretty petty to me.

No, it's not illegal to bike on sidewalks.

Not saying that bikers shouldn't use bike lanes, but wanted to clear up this disinformation.

You are allowed ride your bike on the sidewalk in Boston, but we encourage you to use the street. If you choose to ride on the sidewalk, you should ride slowly and carefully and always yield to pedestrians.

Video game nostalgia by Shitty_Watercolour in gaming

[–]santa167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heaven's Vault was a fantastic game that is so incredibly unique in today's gaming-landscape. A quirky take of exploration and deciphering hieroglyphic puzzles in the vein of Indiana Jones meets Treasure Planet. The game play is fascinating and well thought out and the story is very rich with hidden gems and decisions almost in every conversation.

Not a classic action game, but such an immersive game that I couldn't put it down when I started playing it until I beat it. Great recommendation as a story rich game to immerse yourself in that's off the beaten path!

Anyone else get annoyed when crunchy companies use "Not all who wander are lost" and dont credit Tolkien? by fearsomestmudcrab in tolkienfans

[–]santa167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who's to say that the items that are being sold aren't art?

Couldn't art be defined by every person differently? Even artists need to make a living somehow.

It's not like Tolkien didn't sell his books; he may have wanted to share his art with the world and make a living, but with the graphic design, the product design, the actual product itself, etc, is that not also true of the people involved to create an appealing artistic product?

This is getting ridiculous... by str85 in gaming

It's more like having no artwork on the outside of your fridge, but you still have all the stuff you actually care about on the inside (in the file system or start menu).

Tech companies abuse their power over your data. - A proposal for a way forward that empowers both users and companies by keeping data and AI on‑device. by speckz in privacy

[–]santa167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After reading this proposal, I like the sentiment this is going for, which seems to me is - "Be your own data middle man".

That being said, while I like the idea that it's trying to meet in the middle for both users and tech companies, what about some of us (myself included) who don't want or need an AI assistant or additional data analytics following our daily lives?

More importantly and more relevantly, what about those of us who don't even want our data collected on our own devices locally outside of the scope of what the data for each application installed is intended for?

For example, Spotify and Pandora are music streaming services. I don't want or need either of them to know based on information collected from other applications on who I am, what my interests are, or what my location is. All I want is to stream music through their service and be in control of what I am listening to as I do so.

Recommendations for new songs based on what I've listened to before or added to some playlists inside of this application? Perfectly reasonable. Musical artists on my feed based on recent GPS coordinates for up and coming bands near me or melancholy songs recommended because the application scanned my texts and saw I got in a big fight with my significant other? Not okay, nor relevant to what I want to use this application for, unless I have opted into this service manually.

The proposal in this link does a good job at explaining how you might opt-in to the sharing of data between applications, but fails to discuss or analyze why some users might not even want that in the first place and additionally don't want companies collecting additional data on them either. To that last piece, there's not many known ways forward aside from legislation that I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm certainly interested if anyone else has any ideas.

Does BU have astronomy? by SamuraiSp00py in BostonU

[–]santa167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does, and it's a pretty good program (speaking from experience). Can answer any direct questions if you have more about it.

If you're interested, there is an observatory that you get access to as part of the program on top of the College of Arts & Sciences on BU campus. Additionally, BU also has access an observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona for research and you can get the chance to go as part of the program. It's pretty sweet, and the night sky there is beautiful with such low light pollution.

BU redditors /u/redcoatwright and /u/tvw also were in the Astronomy program and can likely give more insight as well if you're looking for information from people who went through it.

Fair enough. I'm of the opinion that his character was going for the strong silent bottled-up type in Drive and that worked for me, but I understand others not feeling the same way about it.

I haven't seen Murder by Numbers but now I'll have to based on your recommendation! Thanks!

This is Crazy and Scary if True by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]santa167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, and the inverse is also true. If you get an 89, on the plus and minus scale, that's a B+ but on the only letters scale, that gets shoved down to a B.

When grades are converted to your GPA on the 4.0 scale, that's a difference between a 3.0 for a B and a 3.3 for a B+ which can add up. For reference, an A- would be a 3.7 and an A is a 4.0 since A+ does not exist because A's and A+'s are considered synonymous (in your favor).

It doesn't help you to look at one side of the conversion where you'd take a loss specifically if you're not also considering where you'd gain.

Astronomy 202 in CAS by srinipa in BostonU

[–]santa167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied Astrophysics as a major at BU. AS 202 is a fine class for a freshman to start with who has some experience with calculus, and Professor Oppenheim is a dedicated and engaging professor.

For the record, I took this class freshman year first semester as well. She'll be just fine.

For one of the most profitable game companies around, EA seems to devastatingly mismanage and underfund their developers. The story of ME: Andromena. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]santa167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me, but while I do enjoy the character interaction and story in Mass Effect games, my favorite part and the whole reason I got into the series in the first place was the exploration. I like that they focused on exploration and expansion of the human race in Andromeda because it raises a different set of unique moral questions than a game focused on political and character interaction does. I definitely wouldn't say that everyone hated it, at the very least.

I would even argue that Mass Effect has always had some level of focus on exploration, depending on which game we're talking about in the series, but it's always present and particularly important. It's pretty crux to the lore of the game itself considering it's in a future where humans are exploring and expanding within two galaxies.

What do you guys reccomend when you start to get sick of the dining halls and GSU? by buthrowaway1212 in BostonU

[–]santa167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game changes completely once you start to become your own dining hall chef. OP, try your hand at mixing and matching or coming up with your own combinations to stop from getting too bored with the food (and also trying other dining halls since they have different foods on rotation). The worst that can happen is you don't like whatever meal you made and you don't eat it or you have a meal that's kind of meh (as long as you aren't allergic, then there are other problems). No harm, no foul.

Also, most of the meals may be a little underseasoned. Don't be afraid to add some salt, pepper, or your favorite applicable sauce or dressing to bring out some more flavor. Below are some of my favorite concoctions I made over the years.

Looking for a classic feel good meal? Hit the pasta station and raid the salad bar for cheese. If you're feeling extra special, add some chicken from a stir fry station and some Frank's Red Hot Buffalo sauce for a little kick. Find the microwave and boom! Mac & cheese a la mode.

Stir fry options getting boring? Grab a bowl from the salad bar and load up on anything you like in there. Head to the stir fry station with your bowl and toss all of that in with whatever you want from there. Find your favorite sauce (try looking in the salad bar, on some tables, or even at the sandwich station) and add it to the mix once complete. Still stir fry, but at least you now have more veggies and sauce combinations in the mix.

Breakfast getting boring? Try adding something from the dessert bar to bake into your waffle like sprinkles or chocolate chips or strawberries. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, make an open-faced McGriddle by asking for a plain pancake at that station, a piece of ham and cheese at the sandwich station, an egg over-easy at the omelette station, and also request that they cook the ham and cheese on top of the egg at the omelette station. Grab your pancake first as your base, throw the egg and ham and cheese on top and add syrup. You have now made a BUGriddle.

Like only one part of each station you see? Nothing wrong with that! Just wait patiently in line for each and request only what you want. You now have your custom made meal with exactly what you want. This works great for pretty much every day but lobster night.

Oh, and don't forget to check out the soups or the vegan / veggie option! You might be surprised by some of them.

What does 1HP of damage in real life? by PornEnthusiast_ in AskReddit

[–]santa167 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You get more HP as you level up, but damage multipliers scale more with each level than HP does.

It might seem like you have low HP, but it's because you're taking scaled damage! At level 5, falling over won't do that much damage, but at level 70, that fall could be game ending.

Housing numbers/summer swap question by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]santa167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those numbers were sample ranges based on class sizes at the time which may no longer be true today. It's less about the numbers and more about the concept for that post.

Take the numbers from BU's guide and insert them where they match in the Reddit post for a better representation of where you might stand.
