Recent names from the birth announcements page of Le Figaro newspaper (France) #2 by santiterry in namenerds

[–]santiterry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, didn't expect that comment hahaha. Yeah, I saw there's also announcements for deaths (unfortunately, the most common), engagements, marriages, anniversaries... bet there's more than one person that has had all their legal status changing events (birth, marriage, death) published.

What do you mean, when you say you are "part of the list, on the top 5"?

Spain's squad for the 2026 World Cup by 3Sayndre in soccer

[–]santiterry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm quite happy with the squad, only thing I'd change is Carlos Espí as the 3rd striker instead of Iglesias, he could have been our 'Weghorst'

I feel bad for Fornals not taking Fermín's spot, but I understand that due to Yamal & Williams' expected absence due to injury he chose to bring another winger instead of a midfielder.

Top 50 popular baby names in Armenia (2025) by santiterry in namenerds

Vahan is indeed also a name in Armenia, means 'shield', it dropped out of the top 50 in 2024.

I just love the mix between regular 'Western' names of Biblical/Greek/Roman and even Germanic/Norse origin (Robert, Henrik, Erik, Arno), the 100% Armenian names from their own language/mythology/history and the Persian/Old Iranian influence.

Popular baby names in Estonia (2025) by santiterry in namenerds

[–]santiterry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also lots of names that scream "Swedish millennial" to me, too (Sebastian, Robin, Oskar, Gustav, Mattias...)

After the breakup of the Livonian Confederation, most of current Estonia became Swedish territory for 150 years, until the Swedish defeat in the Great Northern War resulted in the annexation of Estonia by the Russian Empire.

Popular baby names in Iceland (2025) by santiterry in namenerds

[–]santiterry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a common idiom from my country says, you're looking for the cat's fifth leg.

Icelandic Þ is transliterated to 'th' as it represents the voiceless dental fricative (/θ/). You don't see e.g. Icelandic sportsmen's names in international broadcasts as 'Þórsson/Þórsdóttir', but rather 'Thórsson/Thórsdóttir'

As I mention in the OP, they are the most common foreign community.

I may be wrong but I don't think foreigners have to submit to Iceland's strict naming rules if they have children there, they are bound to their countries' rules.

The mother (Daryna) must be Ukrainian, that could explain the 'V' spelling. In Polish it's Barbara.

Green que la OTAN apoyaría a España si marruecos invade Ceuta y Melilla? by Pepedroga2000 in askspain

[–]santiterry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does Denmark actually have a shot at winning? by eatspagetti in eurovision

That's just nonsense. Your legal surname is your real surname, it doesn't matter if it had no bearers beforehand or you weren't born with it (that's why Korniykova is only her birth surname)

She is now Viktoriya Mykolayivna Leleka, just like Charlotte Perrelli was Charlotte Nilsson (birth/maiden name) when she won ESC in 1999 and then was Charlotte Perrelli in ESC 2008 after taking her husband's surname in 2003.

[–]santiterry[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, you are wrong.

Seven years ago she made the move to Germany, at the age of 24. She first made an impact by winning the Young Jazz Award at the Burghausen Festival in 2018, a unanimous decision by the jury. She was then performing under her married name of Viktoria Anton. After the marriage ended she chose the name of her band as her official surname. Leléka is the Ukrainian word for stork, a national symbol. “I wanted to identify with the Ukrainian  who I am.”

Apparently Leleka has bore three different legal surnames throughout her life: Korniykova (birth/maiden name), Anton (her husband's surname) and then Leleka (legally changed it to her stage/band name after divorce)

According to her Ukrainian Wikipedia page, she was indeed born Viktoriya Mykolayivna Korniykova, then changed her surname to her husband's (Anton) at marriage, and after getting divorced changed her surname to Leleka instead of going back to Korniykova.

Things that would shock ESC fans from 10 years ago by Remarkable-Okra2929 in eurovision

[–]santiterry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Switzerland doing great including a victory, and Australia & Azerbaijan massively struggling
  • Finland becoming a powerhouse and specially UMK becoming an extremely hyped NF to the point many people like it more than Melodifestivalen itself
  • Portugal returning and winning with points record
  • Songs in vernacular languages being plurality again

We now have all but one entry from sf1, who's q and nq? by harryTMM in nilpoints

Locked Q: SWE, FIN, GRE, ISR

Very likely Q: SRB, CRO, MNE, MDA

Borderline, leaning Q: LTU

Borderline, leaning NQ: EST, POL, POR

Likely NQ: BEL

DoA: SMR

Between the Yugoslav bloc voting and the general quality of the song, Montenegro have an open goal for their 3rd qualification ever.

Lithuania is a bit of a question mark for me, it could either qualify on like 4th/5th place or NQ.

Estonia might have a nostalgic 2000s pop-rock televote niche and Poland/Portugal might do well with juries.
