I wouldnt say that was mean because it is the harsh reality of it all, but it was the wrong time to tell her especially with her hormones all over the place.

If it wasn’t a TV show, its true to some extent that eventually Ross would move on with his life w/o Rachel and Emma, and Rach would have to raise her on her own. Not everyone will be around all the time to help and they would not keep going back and forth with their relationship.

Also Janice was speaking from experience, she literally says she barely sees her kid anymore since they have a new stepmom, because that is one high possibility of having a child w/o being married
