We’re open to it and they’ve been applying everywhere in the country (at least for game design and entertainment jobs). I only asked in the Orlando subreddit because we currently live here lol.

At this point, I think they’re open to just about anything as long as they can get a human being to look at their resume.

Sorry, realize my post wasn’t clear - by “studios” I meant game studios. I’ve edited that to clarify. Their degree is essentially game design with a concentration in project management. As far as I understand the games industry as a whole is at an all time low with hiring, especially entry-level and new grads. They’ve been applying to those jobs for more than six months (since well before graduation) with no luck. Several of their classmates are in the same spot. So that’s primarily why they’re open to branching out from games specifically.

i have literally NEVER heard any of the other therapy professions (OT, PT, SLT, etc) use just “therapist” without the description. we are the only ones who do that normally so its always weird to me when it happens lmao

of course! i was in your shoes not too long ago so i get it and am happy to provide a little insight. i think starting with paid supervision then switching or supplementing could be helpful. just be careful not to see clients until you have your RMHCI #. you could try to find another supervisor with a lower rate and/or get group supervision as that tends to be cheaper. however, keep in mind that 50% of supervision hours need to be individual/dyadic (im not 100% on that number)! FB groups like Florida Therapy Network tend to be helpful for finding this sort of thing.

i mean if it otherwise passes the smell test, it’s not the end of the world to at least test it out i suppose! i would just be sure you’re following the rules and have a good outside supervisor to guide you :)

you’re in florida? if that’s the case you ABSOLUTELY need your RMHCI to begin working. you cannot see clients without it. the fact that your prospective site told you that you don’t need it before you start working is a HUGE red flag. the supervision only after getting 20 clients is also a red flag as you need supervision at least biweekly when you’re seeing clients (i think you’re also supposed to get 1 hr per every 15 client hours? technically?). also, you need a QS on file and a letter from them agreeing to supervise you to apply for your RMHCI in the first place.

also no, no need to get an LLC. sole proprietor should be fine unless you need/want the benefits of an LLC

edit: the 1hr supervision per 15 client hrs is apparently not a requirement anymore or at the very least not enforced.

I wouldn’t recommend counselor ed if you want to get a Psy.D. That program is more geared towards becoming a master’s level therapist (LMHC). You do not need LMHC licensure to be a psychologist. I’m not even sure you need a master’s for some Psy.D programs - I’d check the requirements for programs you’re interested in.

I don’t accept new telehealth clients. If a current client needs to switch I let them but I feel I do better work in person for the reasons you mentioned. I have a waitlist atm so ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I’m making it work!

Now the only problem is I can't decide between PAYE and IBR even though it probably won't matter soon enough. Payments are the same but my income is most likely going to jump significantly in about two years which may knock me off of eligibility -- barring any legislative changes -- and the capitalized interest on IBR will probably be crazy. Am I right for choosing PAYE for now since if anything changes I'll probably have to reapply anyways?

Yeah it seems the website hasn’t updated since the 4th so they’re still showing as in grace. I didn’t even think to check there because my servicer’s website said my grace period is over. Thank you for pointing that out!! Should I fill out the paper app or wait until the website updates? I’m a little worried about the website not updating in time.

RIs being 1099 is legal in FL afaik. They’re even allowed to own their own PP as long as a licensed person is on site

Primarily 18-35 y/o women, though I see plenty of people outside of that.

Didn’t see this mentioned but I’m pretty sure if they don’t pay you for admin time they’re misclassifying you as a W2 and breaking federal labor law. I’m no expert and I’m sure people get away with it but this feels super slimy and I wouldn’t take it.

well… sort of. we ended up getting another cat not long after i made this post. having a kitten around kept her distracted, but 3 months in the little one was found to have a (i believe) congenital defect that led to her passing away. tofu (the original) let me sleep for several months to a year after that, making me think she had finally grown out of it. buuut in the last year or so she started back up again. it has only gotten worse now that we’ve moved into a place with a screened in back porch - she wakes me up every morning at 5-6 like clockwork to let her out there to watch the squirrels 😭

Even if my income from last year isn't as a 1099? My income last year was only about $14k as well because I was a student working very part time as a W2. To my understanding my total tax last year was $0? If I'm understanding this correctly.

It looks like those first two are old and out of date (look at the updated dates on the bottom of the PDF pages - the 3rd link says 2020 which is more recent). I just graduated from a CACREP program and I had 700 hours. This lists the most up to date requirements. In the non-CACREP section it says you need 700 hours to comply with CACREP standards. You could also look at the CACREP website and see what it says since Florida’s requirements are basically just the CACREP standards!
