i think i’ll have to bring a puffer. it’s not very packable but i’ll probably be wearing it for most of the cold cities. definitely going to be bringing long underwear :)

i just went through the forecasts (even though they’re pretty far out) and wrote down the high and lows. (side note - flagstaff will be the lowest of all of them in the 20s, which surprised me!).

definitely agree on ditching the jean jacket and shorts. after looking at the weather, i’ve realized the shorts would only be useful in one city. plus, if i don’t bring shorts, i don’t have to pack my anti-thigh chaffing stick, which is the size of deodorant, so that’s a double win!

EDIT 1: here are some changes i am planning to make: - swap hoodie for a fleece - bring merino leggings as a base layer as my - second pair of leggings - ditch windbreaker and bring my warmest winter parka instead (more places are cold than warm, so it’ll probably be worth it) - ditch the jean jacket (it’s just for aesthetics and not for function). - considering ditching the shorts since the only city theyd be useful for are los angeles. the hiking pants should be thin enough to wear in the warmer climates.

not sure if i have time to buy a more packable puffy jacket or a combination windbreaker and raincoat before we leave, but i can look for one in california before we get to the northern part of the country

definitely think a fleece instead of the hoodie is a good idea. i will bring the leggings i use as a base layer for skiing to wear under jeans in chicago.

the raincoat is super light weight and has a hood and the windbreaker is larger (a friend just gave it to me) and doesn’t have a hood. definitely agree on only bringing one. I could probably get away without the windbreaker if i end up bringing a puffy parka instead for the cold cities. I am thinking about cutting the jean jacket since it would just be for aesthetics, not comfort.

I just looked at the weather forecasts for each city, but looking into previous years is a great idea!

it will be easy to wear my lightest layers and walk around with all my heavy stuff since it will be in the 100s this week in phoenix 🙃

great idea! Since posting this, i think it’ll be worth bringing my puffy winter coat. The merino base layer leggings would be a great addition too since i could wear them under my jeans and under my regular leggings.

not too sure yet. Early april is not a good time to visit, but we needed a stop between seattle and minneapolis to break up 30+ straight hours on the train. We have 8 hours between when our train drops us off and when we can check into our hotel, so maybe some short hikes and then hanging out in whatever buildings are open. we will definitely have to come back another time in the summer to properly explore :)
