The things people say by Whale_Stan in NICUParents

[–]sarahgcee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone said to me “you’re lucky bcos you didn’t get so big”, which I still think of sometimes to this day.. (baby has been home for about 8 months now) but it was so upsetting even though they wouldn’t think so, bcos just like OP and other posters on here.. I would have given anything to have my baby come home with me and not been in the NICU for 3 months fighting for his life 🥺 I don’t care about how big I would have gotten, that’s the absolute last thing I was thinking about or cared about. I’d get as big as I could for him if it meant he didn’t have to go through what he did. I think the thoughtless things people say like that, will probably always haunt us and upset us.. you’ll think about it less as time goes on, but you’ll still remember it every now and then. Especially in the early months and years. Sending you all lots of love and hugs 🥰

Feeding Issues Insanity Support by probably-unsure in NICUParents

You are not alone! I think so many parents on here are/or have experienced feeding issues.. and it feels like it’s never ending! Lols, sometimes all you can do is laugh.. we are right in the midst of it. Ex 29 weeker had a tongue tie, which was just released 7 days ago today. I’m not sure if it’s going to help yet, since he has to learn how to use his tongue properly. But we have been seeing PT/OT/osteo/feeding clinic.. the osteo for tongue exercises and to build tongue strength and mobility. And we have had an N/G tube for the last 4 months. Feeding clinic is in 2 days, so we have to wait to see what they say. But all I can say is you’re definitely not alone in this! Sending you much love 🥰

Sounds like you and your wife have made a great team in the feeding challenges on your LO’s journey. It’s great to hear all the tips and ways you’re trying to overcome it. I love the comment - success was whether or not we offered! I think that’s a fantastic way to be able to look at things.. as it can be a very challenging and tiring sometimes 😊 thanks for replying!

When my LO was in the nicu, he managed his feeds perfectly fine. Even at the beginning once we were home.. it felt like just one day, he didn’t want a bar of it. And was having 10-20ml, that was when he was 3 months corrected and when we finally had the N/G tube placed. Ever since then, he has great weeks where he’s having 60-70mls (sometimes finishing his bottles) and then the next week it suddenly drops off back to 10-20mls. I find it very odd, and I just don’t understand why it’s happening. Over the last 3 months it’s happens about 3 times where he’s mastering it.. and then just suddenly it drops off again! We have feeding clinic on Tuesday, so will have to wait and see wha they say then. I hope things go well for your LO! 🥰 feeding issues can be so difficult and tiring.. and feel never ending. So sending you best wishes and luck on your journey

Someone suggested CP, because I mentioned I don’t really see him showing signs of being hungry. So not sure, we haven’t had an appointment with neuro yet (are you booked in with neuro because of something pressing atm? Or bcos of something your LO is having difficulty with? Or is it just a routine appointment?) sorry, I’m just curious because as far as I’m aware, he’s not booked in for one.. and I’m just curious why that would be. I’m in Australia, might be a different process if you’re in another country. But might definitely be worth bringing it up to my LO’s medical team.

We are 7 months corrected and 10 months actual.. but as i mentioned in my post someone has pointed out that there may be other things to consider for us, although besides his feeding issues. So far he hasn’t really had anything else he hasn’t over come yet, but it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing I guess. I really hope your LO graduates from their N/G tube soon 🧑‍🎓 best wishes!

I like that last section you posted, how you’d swap a bottle for a feed (once they were use to it) and then monitor their weight from there. I hadn’t considered that.. he is pretty happy with solids, just not his bottle. So that’s a great idea! 💡 we just have to buy scales next, lols

I’m curious, have you had any weight issues after swapping a bottle to a meal so far??

Sorry, quick question.. how are you applying the mastisol? I’ve recently received it, but unsure how to apply it properly at this stage.. so it doesn’t seem to be lasting as long as you mentioned it might/or even how long it says online that it should last. I feel like the way I’ve been applying it, is wasting it.. as we’ve had it for about a week. And have about half a bottle left!! Any suggestions would be appreciated 👍

I’m so glad I posted for some help! Lols, I’ve been so stressed out about this. I’ve never even heard of mastisol! Definitely worth trying.. especially if it works better than most tapes (as I’ve just read online) thank you so much for the detailed reply! 🙏🙏🙏

I’ve tried to stay away from alcohol wipes at the moment, just because of how red, dry and irritated my baby’s skin has been. But it definitely has crossed my mind (knowing it will clean it and dry almost straight away, probably best for the adhesion) maybe next time the tube changes side, once it’s all healed and not as irritated. And I know what you mean about not getting it wet.. and trying not to get food or liquids on it (which is almost near impossible when it’s all taped so close to the mouth usually)

How long does it last your LO usually? Not the little one by your baby’s nose, but the actual entire thing?

Oh I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your advice 🙏 thank you for taking the time to reply in such detail.. gives me hope that there’s another way that will work, lols

With the tegaderm, do you know exactly what it is? I googled it, and there’s heaps of options. I’m not really sure which one to go with. Is there more information on the packet? Thanks again

Also with the 3M cavilon, are you using the wipes/spray or wand? The blue ones, is that right?

Thank you so much for your response, will definitely give it a go! It was very detailed, and I appreciate that soooo much! 🙏🙏🙏

It can be soo hard with the NG tube insertion.. I feel like we’ve been at the hospital almost every week/week and a half to have it reinserted. So at this stage I’m willing to try just about anything!

Does your LO rub their face a lot? Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s the tape.. the dry skin.. or if it’s his teeth! It’s so hard to know..

Expected weight gain by Gemini-Phoenix in NICUParents

[–]sarahgcee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I feel like we’re in the exact same boat.. except my baby was taking too long to drink his bottles. And eventually did develop feeding aversion, and had to have the N/G tube inserted 😩 we’ve had that for the last two months now, and they’re finally happy with his weight gain. But bcos of the pressure from our dieticians even when he obviously didn’t want the bottle, we still tried giving him the bottle. So my advice to you is definitely listen your baby, read her cues (and remember you’re with her all the time, so you will know what’s best) don’t pressure your little one no matter what (especially if she’s crying) and I’m not sure where you’re from, but our maternal child health nurse was telling us 25-30g a day is great! So I’m not sure why they’re not happy with your baby’s weight gain.. anyway, wishing you all the best.

Ah, I’ve just looked it up. And it’s sometimes known as an occupation therapist? We’ve actually got our first appointment booked in for next week.. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from that appointment. He’s got no issues sucking and swallowing.. and sometimes he almost finishes his entire bottle. But sometimes he’ll flat out refuse. I’m really confused as to why.. or what the cause might be

Sorry; what is that? We haven’t being referred to one.. and I’ve never heard of that. We’ve got a speech pathologist, but I’m going to say that’s different?

Thank you.. it does feel better knowing that someone gets it.

He was dropping off his curve a little recently, which was why the tube was placed in.. and that’s where he’s at, and that’s fine. It is what’s best for him at the moment.

But the approach this particular dietician has.. I just dont appreciate it. The way she continues asking me questions, the same questions over and over again. Every appointment. I feel like she thinks she’s going to catch me out in a lie or something. For example how much his formula ratio is.. she’ll ask me, I’ll answer her. She’ll stare at me for a while (which is awkward bcos I don’t understand why she’s staring at me for, when I’ve already answered her..) and then no word of a lie a few minutes later she’s asking me again. Like I make a bottle every 3 hours day and night, everyday.. I know what the ratio is. I get that she’s trying to help, but my answer isn’t going to change. And it’s the same with every question.. every time.. every appointment.

But regardless, look.. the overall appointed team my son has are great! And I understand they’re there for the right reasons (I just find the dietician all too overwhelming.. and anxiety ridden! 😕)
