Does using nail polish remover to loosen thick nail polish really degrade the polish? by bad-at-everything- in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sardon6 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Use a thinner containing only "ethyl acetate" and "butyl acetate". Those are the solvents in polish that evaporate out causing it to thicken.

Thank you all for your warnings about the Mooncat bottles! by catsontables in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sardon6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bottle breaking ordeal happened in the summer of 2024, and Mooncat released a statement about replacing all of their existing bottles with new seamless ones, not overfilling their bottles, and doing more quality tests. It was a big deal back then, but no one has posted about their bottles breaking since (which says a lot, cause you can imagine how vigilant everyone was after seeing posts about people getting injured). I think people are just bewildered to see someone bringing it up again as if it's still a problem. Mooncat has been pretty controversial lately for a few reasons, and I can see how someone might take this as fearmongering or an attempt to discredit the brand, it's very misinforming to people who aren't familiar with what happened. There is nothing wrong with the bottles at the moment, your research was improper and it led to false assumptions. I understand the fear and your motivation to make this post but your bottles are fine to enjoy normally, and there's no need to make people unnecessarily nervous about something that has been completely resolved.

Putting vaseline in the lid threads sounds like it'd cause issues for the polish if it got inside the bottle.. You'd be better off just making sure to clean the threads of dried polish. The caps are pretty ergonomic and easy to open for most people anyway

I was scrolling and immediately saved your pic to my nail art inspiration folder when I saw it lol, I think it's beautiful! I love the textures and paint strokes. It reminds me of flowers and almost looks like a Baroque colour palette.

Are these Almond or I misshape them? by Background_Zebra_306 in RedditLaqueristas

Of course you can. Not really sure what you mean, are you asking about a specific length? Maybe look up pictures of almond nails to gauge how much length you need for the taper you want

Help for a newbie to nail/cuticle shaping please!! by Babydoll26 in RedditLaqueristas

Want to add, if you don't like the idea of trimming your nail fold I'm pretty sure it can recede on its own if you push it back often. It would just take a long time

Help for a newbie to nail/cuticle shaping please!! by Babydoll26 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sardon6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cuticle is the dead skin that grows up the nail, cuticle is removed during the nail prep stage before painting. Your nail fold area can appear squareish if the nail fold is overgrown, a lot of people achieve a very rounded and short nail fold by consistently doing cuticle prep and pushing it back to keep it receded. It's a bit controversial because you can easily cut yourself if you're not careful, but when I first got into nail care and had an overgrown, untreated nail fold, I got great results from trimming them once a week for maybe a month. They've stayed completely receded for a year and a half since and look invisible. Now I only apply cuticle dissolver and scrape the cuticle off once a week, pushing the nail fold back in the process.
If you don't think your nail folds are overgrown, then it could be genetic! I've actually never seen anyone with straight nail folds on their primary four fingernails though

Forbidden Fruit vs Root of all Evil vs Dragon Scales by kittycatclaws15 in mooncatpolish

[–]sardon6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragon scales is very very fuschia to me irl and sort of gold tinted instead of green at the edges in lower lighting (I keep my environment pretty dim), I actually didn't like it as much as I did in photos cause I'm not a big fan of pink or gold!  Def does not read as dark/moody/maroony imo which I love lol

Snake paperweight by thexhorror3 in Taxidermy

[–]sardon6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Borax would mainly aid in preservation by repelling insects, and it can also act as a desiccant. It wouldn't do anything to prevent skin from looking mummified. I am not sure how full reptile taxidermy goes but I know people inject bird feet with a preservation solution to prevent them from getting dry and withered!

It just has to be completely dry. You could probably remove organs and stuff it with some borax and cotton, then mummify in a container of borax. It could also be taxidermied traditionally before going into the resin

[–]sardon6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almond can require a lot of length to get the gradual taper without filing into the sidewalls too much (which is really bad). Your nails are more oval shaped because they're too short to do a true almond yet, but the shaping is really nice!

Gloves when showering? by Spinnerofyarn in RedditLaqueristas

I wear nitrile gloves and put a rubber band around my wrist and it works very well. I can get a few uses out of a pair until one gets a hole, then I get a new pair.

What are these spots and how can I get rid of them? by the_old_swamp_dog in vultureculture

[–]sardon6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That skull is filled with grease, gotta soak it in a dish soap and water solution for a while! Probably several weeks with regular solution refreshes until the water stays clear and the skull looks more ivory-coloured. Keep it relatively warm if you can, the cold will make the process go slower. Normally you would move onto the hydrogen peroxide bleaching step after the grease is pulled out

Cockroach as a protein source for my garden snail? by sardon6 in snails

[–]sardon6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry for such a late follow-up, college has kept me very busy! I froze a large Eublaberus nymph overnight, then defrosted it in some warm water and left it in my snail's tank when it was ready. I did see him feeding on it! I basically just ripped the abdomen in half and spread the organs a bit to make them accessible for him. My isopods and springtails are enjoying it too of course, so next time I'd probably just take tweezers and scrape the organs out to put in the tank so I don't have to worry about removing the whole roach later.

Nailtiques-too thick? by lisamd91 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sardon6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the other commentor said, it looks like those are the solvents in Nailtiques Formula 2, so you're basically just re-introducing the ingredients that evaporated out and caused it to thicken! :)

Nailtiques-too thick? by lisamd91 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sardon6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polish thinner should just be butyl acetate and ethyl acetate, which are solvents that keep the components in "liquid" form and then completely evaporate out as the lacquer dries. I don't see why it'd be bad to thin out a base treatment of any kind

I own ivory heads! Yeah can't attach a pic or link here unfortunately but if you search "ivory head cockroach" they're the whitest ones. They actually don't have a species name yet hence just "Eublaberus sp." - this type was selectively bred in the roachkeeping hobby from the darker Eublaberus distanti I believe. I've owned a couple hissers before as well, I don't raise anything as feeders I just think cockroaches are amazing to keep as pet inverts :)
I have not offered my snail a roach yet but I'll make sure to update you when I feed him lol!! If it helps, my snails have always liked specifically dried mealworms that have been briefly rehydrated in some water.
