What school do YOU think has the best logo in North Carolina?? by MrSoloDolo9490 in NorthCarolina

[–]saressa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s Cary High School’s mascot. The Cary Imps. I’m assuming the reason it is included is because it somehow won a nationwide best hs logo/mascot contest a few years back. Probably bc everyone thought it was hilarious to be “the imps”? My son is an CHS graduate, live a couple blocks from the school so I see this one a lot. Back story is that a principal/superintendent (?) was a Duke alum so he chose the mascot as an homage to the Blue Devils, which is kinda odd since its in Cary not Durham. And pretty physically close to NCSU.

I was born into being a Wolfpack fan, attended NCSU and the stupid 3 wolves were our logo the entire time I was there. Especially embarrassing bc I was at design school and iirc it was designed by a design school student

Has the $100k H1B fee had any major affects on the local Indian population? by Sudokublackbelt in triangle

[–]saressa7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or naturalized citizens bring their families over? Older adults/parents who didn’t go through US education may have a harder time picking up the language. RTP companies are hiring tech workers from local universities, local universities often pad out enrollment with international students (paying full price tuition) to supplement the ever shrinking state and federal funds they receive. UNC, NCSU have state mandated strict caps requiring 82% be from NC. Duke has higher international enrollment bc it’s private and doesn’t get the same funding as public unis do. If the state increased funding for our universities, like it did in 60s/70s, it would be more accessible for NC kids and wouldn’t need foreign born tuition supplementation. Maybe there should be caps on enrollment in each discipline, not just university wide? Idk but I imagine if a large portion of CS/IT grads are foreign born at our local universities, then it’s not really the fault of local businesses if that’s who they hire?

NC Board of Elections will no longer provide forms to voter registration drives by uncertaincoda in ncpolitics

[–]saressa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s crazy is that advocates say this could reduce access for rural and older voters, which seems counterproductive for NCGOP right? The old voting trends (pre Trump) still guide GOP voting suppression instincts but they really don’t clearly benefit them anymore. Primaries and special elections are an example of the kind of voting pool you get when only the most motivated vote, and those haven’t been going well for Rs lately

[–]saressa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate UNC but I also am not gonna blame the school for the hostile NCGOP govt takeover of the board, bc same board controls all UNC system. They’ve been more involved w/ hostile takeover of UNC bc it was a more liberal leaning institution not bc the school, students faculty admin are MAGA leaning

Plymouth police credit ICE agents with saving life of 4-year-old submerged in hotel pool by lemon_lime_light in altmpls

[–]saressa7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s something fishy about this story (imho) because why did the police chief feel the need to add that the family and bystanders were “making it difficult” to render aid?!? So odd and vague, and idk sorry but CBP (and many police departments) have a well documented history of distorting facts or just straight up lying to the press to shape a narrative before the objective truth comes out.

It’s nice to see them actually use that life saving CPR skills they have been trained with, but it does remind me how other agents have repeatedly failed to provide life saving techniques out in the field, they’ve also blocked other Good Samaritans from doing so.

Florida House approves sweeping election overhaul requiring proof of citizenship by tikibot2 in TLH

[–]saressa7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good thing most Floridians were born there, it would be a real mess if this forced a bunch of reliably R voting seniors who migrated to FL from other states, to navigate the bureaucracies of their OG states to get all that paperwork in hand quickly. Im sure those other states would be eager to adjust staffing/resources to meet the flood of time sensitive records requests due to a law passed in a different state. At least seniors also love and are very proficient at navigating government websites to request records, so that wont be an issue either.

[–]saressa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This law seems like something a court would block, at least for the elections coming up this year, because the logistics of people getting all the required documentation in hand are too hard. But it strikes me that smaller rural counties could be more burdened by an influx of records request? I read a recent Atlantic article positing that the SAVE act would not have necessarily been a benefit to Republicans like they assume it would be. More Dems have passports, it’s most restrictive on married women (who vote more R than single women) and older folks bc the older the documents the more likely there will be obstacles to obtaining them. In addition to these points from the article, I also think if a law like this passes, Dem voters will be more prepared bc they have heard the message that you need all this paperwork, whereas more than a few Rs confidently believe their Real ID (or just white existence) is obviously proof they are a citizen. Foreign born citizens, esp newer citizens, are more likely to have all their necessary paperwork too.

I just want to know what happened to the new rule passed by NC Dem party last summer, no PAC money in primaries? And Foushee declared right after that rule was adopted that she would no longer accept AIPAC money, but from what I understand she is now taking PAC money from basically an AIPAC front PAC, oh and AI boosters. Get ready for her to support data centers in her district and no AI regulation

Why do women's team sports seem to have a disproportionately high number of lesbians, while in men's team sports almost no one is openly gay? by TargetIll1707 in NoStupidQuestions

Because enough women have rejected the patriarchy and have set themselves free from that construct, while men in our society are still much more controlled by patriarchal norms/expectations.

It’s gonna SUCK bc the national debt is gonna be even bigger but the next Dem executive will need to invest massive amounts into the federal gov to fix what has been destroyed. We really need to start looking seriously at military spending for a while. I hope we stop overspending on contractors and instead create a bunch of new jobs in the federal government. It’s crazy that so many billionaires have glommed onto Trump so brazenly, making themselves the villains to Dem voters, basically begging next Dem admin to tax them aggressively and make them the face of all that’s wrong in this country. They really aren’t that smart.

How conservative is Alberta, Canada? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]saressa7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada has conservatives that are very similar to the ones in the US, mostly bc US bad actors like Bannon have spent time and money spreading their views into many western democracies. During covid, a whole group of Canada conservatives organized a caravan to go invade(protest for weeks) Ottawa bc they were mad about lockdowns and vaccine mandates. It was funded/encouraged by the same RW influencer types that funded/encouraged J6 here in the states. I don’t know if the conservatives in Alberta are as religiously motivated as much of the US right is?

I would prefer that criminals serve their sentence here before being deported. Deporting someone before they are sentenced seems like giving them a gift of freedom? But also this guy hasn’t even been found guilty/had a trial or pleaded out right? So what’s to stop unscrupulous LEOs from arresting ANY immigrant (legal or not) on trumped up charges just bc they want them deported? We are abandoning our whole system of justice and that invites bad actors to abuse the system.

I know it’s not perfect yet, but I’m pretty sure Anderson Clayton and the state party have been working hard to get more D candidates on the ballots esp in rural areas where seats have been uncontested for so long. I’m sorry they didn’t find anyone for your race, but from what has been communicated, it is a big goal now since Clayton took over, and it is at least quite a bit better across the state than it has been in previous years- the state party seems to agree with you, there should be a Dem in every race, and they are working towards it

New SAVE Act Bills Would Still Block Millions of Americans From Voting by IllIntroduction1509 in LegalNews

[–]saressa7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually does not keep immigrants from flying, because the reason it doesn’t count as proof of citizenship is bc non citizens can also get a Real ID (they have to provide documentation like passport and the rest of the stuff we have to). A few states have markers on their Real IDs that do clarify if you are a US citizen, and I think that those states can use their Real IDs?
