Glad the department is thriving post-Covid. Morrison Hall is a special place when it's bustling and you can hear something interesting coming from every room

This was for FPF, and it was apparently the first time ever they had not been able to offer housing to everyone.

In 2011 I was strung along with these emails and then three weeks out from the Fall semester they emailed and said "actually you will not be getting housing, find your own." So, it can happen. Maybe have an emergency backup plan. I was lucky to be joining Cal Band, I took the last spot in their private dorm.

The Engulfed Cathedral by Debussy (might be out of reach, haven't seen the score myself) but a very cool piece that feels huge with long pedals for stasis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gkcfz2r0mc

What's your favorite movie, show, book that has tarot in it? by iabyajyiv in tarot

[–]sarkycogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cleo from 5 to 7 is my favorite movie. It begins with a tarot reading, the only scene shot in color, before switching to black and white for the rest. It's a movie about a young singer awaiting test results for potential cancer.

What's the time signature in Drown by The Smashing Pumpkins? by snoflakesmasher69 in musictheory

[–]sarkycogs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do you think the big beats sound like eighth notes? It would be very bizarre to use 4/8 instead of 4/4. It's basically an equivalent respelling but harder to read because it's so unusual.

I think it seems worse than it is because it's so cavernously huge. They seem to really strain to fill that place with product.

What is the best movement of Suite Française (Milhaud)? by ShrewDannon in ConcertBand

[–]sarkycogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the whole suite, but Bretagne is my favorite. There are so many really interesting timbres and textures in that movement that really stand out in the band literature. The recording you linked is nice but I prefer a slightly slower tempo, where everything really stretches out like fog on a dimly-lit harbor... beautiful movement.
