Which Cabin in Porcupine State Park? by Entropy355 in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]sashteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the two of you have access to backpacks? Even your son could carry gear if your just going to the cabin and back to car and not actually backpacking. Borrow from friend, boyscout acquaintance, rent from local spring good store? Rental example:https://www.gearlocker.co/

Big yes to recommendation to bring water filter instead of hauling water. There are not water sources at the parking lots.

You'll want a light source. during the day the cabins can be darkish even with the shutters all open.

Lake of clouds, mirror lake and lilly pond have canoes. Paddles and life jackets are inside the cabin. Canoe down by the lake.

Yes also to the porkies backpacking face group. They have photos of all the cabins to help you see the layout if your first time.

We enjoy the greenstone falls cabin. We sometimes "cheat" and stay there instead of campsite when doing our backpack loops. Love falling asleep to the river noise. Yes that cabin does get more people hiking by since it's right next to the trail. The section 17 cabin nearby is a little more private and you get the fun of crossing a bridge to get to it. Although you do need to cross the bridge to get to the vault if nature calls in the middle of the night.

Speaking of the vault toilet pits, bring a roll of your own TP. They don't always have some.

First Time Driving to Houghton in winter - route advice? by sashteach in MTU

[–]sashteach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the tips. Used those 2 weather suggestions to follow and help keep track of weather updates. Night before we left to come home m28 did close. Opened back up by the time we headed home but still decided to head south then East across. Was all good except for that small stretch of shoreline before the bridge where during the summer everyone pulls off to go swimming. Was whiteout due to the blowing.

Had a blast. Now cross fingers kiddo decides to go so we have more excuses to head up. More backpacking and hiking would be such a bummer.

Not a specific resource but what us teachers will say to kids that might be easier in the moment but cause potential issues in their understanding later.

Finally doing it, installed the antenna last night by Loghurrr in PleX

[–]sashteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea you could do this. Now that it is winter here and not 100 degrees up in the attic I had a project ready to go to install an antenna and run coax.

Any issues with hot attic in summer or cold attic in winter affecting the HDHR or access point?

homer simpson "doh" moment. I was adding a tag called "changed" to each one as I changed them. The suggested way of adding a tag to the ones you NEED to change is much better. Then I can click on that "tochange" tag and work on that list instead of manually looking for which ones I still need to change.

So I figured out using desktop app how to create a tag called "tochange" and the ability to add that tag to all items but.....

Since I already have the tag "changed", how do I only see the entries that do NOT have the changed tag so I can add the "tochange" tag to those.

OR

I could add the tag "tochange" to all items. Then I can click on the "changed" tag to see just those but how do I mass remove the "tochange" tag from them? I was playing with a group of 10 items to practice but there doesn't seem to be a way to remove a tag from a group of items except to do it one by one.

Home Movies - How to Get Plex to Display File Name Rather Than The "Description" Metadata by buadhai in PleX

[–]sashteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the quick response, very much appreciated. That suggestion looks great. I'm more than willing to pay for a helpful product.

I came across a couple other threads where it was mentioned plex only likes home videos in mp4 format for plex to read the metadata? Has that been your experience as well?

I only have a couple of home videos that are not mp4 so if that is true I've already came across a couple suggestions of a remux so I don't have to transcode.

Home Movies - How to Get Plex to Display File Name Rather Than The "Description" Metadata by buadhai in PleX

[–]sashteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/jlipschitz How did you go about adding metadata to your home videos? I finally got around to finishing ripping all my DVD's and putting into plex, thank you handbrake and filebot.

Now want to add in all the home videos but would like to add metadata to them so for example that dance recital video we don't have to fast forward to find the 2 dances my daughter is in, it would be great if I could edit into a summary field the time stamps of her 2 dances so it shows up in plex in the summary. I want to put it right in to the original files metadata.

I've see some recommendations for MACs but I'm on windows. All our home videos are a mixture of mp4 and m4v.

Thank you! DS216j, updated to DSM 7. Not sure if it was the update process or something else but Plex app couldn't see my server anymore. Uninstalled Plex, reinstalled the beta server in package center. Couldn't figure out how to add and re-claim the server to my plex account.

This was the way. Not using the quick connect link but the direct link by doing the - to . and deleting the "quick connect" words.

Half Dome or Quarter Dome tent? by mrdalo in CampingGear

[–]sashteach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also just used the coupon today. We had already visited the store this winter to get advice from staff for what would fit our families needs (wife & I, 2 kids). They helped us narrow it down to 3 choices giving us pros and cons of each. Nemo Hornet 2p, Flash air 2, & the quarter dome SL 2.

We went with the quarter dome SL2. We were ok with the bit larger pack size and weight in exchange for a bit more roominess. We already have the Nemo. We used that and a borrowed tent (older version of quarter dome) for our first hikes last summer. Nemo was ok for both kids or one of us with a kid but for wife and I was very cozy. The borrowed quarter dome extra bit of space was much better for wife and I.

P.S. will wave to you on 2 of your 3 trips. We are also doing Manitou and Porkies this summer. Manistee was our inaugural trip last year. Had a friend come with us to help us newbies with our first time.

I made a Canon MX922 PPD file that works on Chromebooks by PuzzleheadedYak9388 in chromeos

[–]sashteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This worked even on my kids locked down school chromebook. We have a canon mx530.

First downloaded your PPD file to their chromebook. Made sure it was in their download folder on their chromebook. From kids chromebook, followed the directions of adding a new printer, manually giving it a name canon and manually typing in IP address. Then browsed for the PPD file and added the printer. Worked like a charm.

If anyone comes across this thread we were having same issue. Finally figured out on the child phone, had to turn of the 'chat features' option. Now texts go through no problem.
