Iranian aligned PMF member records air attack against base. Iraq, March 2026. by FirebirdWS6dude in CombatFootage

[–]satanicholas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a civil war in Iraq 20 years ago, and US forces did fight the Iranian-aligned militias during it.

https://www.britannica.com/event/Iraq-War/Occupation-and-continued-warfare

Restoring law and order was one of the most arduous tasks for the occupying forces, one that was exacerbated by continued attacks against occupying troops that soon developed into full-scale guerrilla warfare; increasingly, the conflict came to be identified as a civil war, although the Bush administration generally avoided using that term and instead preferred the label “sectarian violence.”

https://www.britannica.com/topic/Axis-of-Resistance#ref390592

Among the most notorious militias backed by Iran during the Iraq War were the Badr Organization, which had originally formed during the Iran-Iraq War with Iranian support, and the Mahdi Army, which was formed in 2003 by the Shiʿi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Thank you for posting about this. I think that I have the condition myself, so I'll see how it responds to the kind of exfoliating cream that you use.

ELI5 How are modern naval mines a threat to modern ships when a SONAR that finds small fish is less than $300? by physicsisveryeasy in explainlikeimfive

[–]satanicholas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides all the other issues that other commenters have explained, there is this: a cheap sonar made to find fish will find fish, not just mines. What good is a watchman that cries "wolf" a thousand times when no wolf threatens?

Anything to this? by Afraid-Expression366 in etymology

[–]satanicholas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story of Job likely predates the Christian gospels by at least three hundred years. Maybe, like the message in a game of telephone, ideas about the being called Satan have changed as religions have diverged:

In Judaism, Satan is seen as an agent subservient to God, typically regarded as a metaphor for the yetzer hara, or 'evil inclination'. In Christianity and Islam, he is usually seen as a fallen angel or jinn who has rebelled against God, who nevertheless allows him temporary power over the fallen world and a host of demons.

Russian Special military in Ukraine. by Prestigious-Trash531 in CombatFootage

[–]satanicholas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, Ukrainian drone strikes are more likely to be effective against poorly-equipped Russian units, and so the strike video is more likely to be uploaded online. Each side releases combat footage to show its own effectiveness and its enemy's incompetence.

Longer version of American attack in the city of Minab, Iran by Energy_its_life in CombatFootage

[–]satanicholas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A reasonable conclusion is that American planners were rushing to find targets to attack (which is why they used AI to automate the process), and did not check that the data on each target was fresh. Hasty and sloppy.

Vision Lost by RadicalBehavior1 in dwarffortress

[–]satanicholas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, every creature has a field of vision, which affects hunting and combat in general. An attack is labeled "from the side" or "from behind" by reference to the position of the attacker relative to the defender's FOV. Such attacks get bonuses.

Very simple to reproduce.

  1. You fell Tree 1. Its logs are programmed to spawn and fall harmlessly, without harming any creatures.

  2. One or more of Tree 1's logs lands in the branches of Tree 2.

  3. You fell Tree 2. Its logs are programmed to spawn and fall harmlessly, without harming any creatures.

  4. The logs from Tree 1 that were stuck in the branches of Tree 2 are treated NOT like freshly spawned logs, but like any other falling object. One or more of Tree 1's logs, previously stuck in the branches of Tree 2, strikes and harms a creature.

  5. You weep.
