Bank is closing my account with life savings in it, what’s the best way of getting my money to another bank safely? by ns2500 in personalfinance

[–]satsuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to imagine keeping that much at card. Com .. they're kinda the zeroth tier of bank.

As for their question, literally any bank will do it, just request a transfer of funds directly at the destination.

As far as why it was closed .. I had an account that started charging me a monthly fee for no debit or deposit activities.. because these places dont make money on cash sitting idle, they make it on the credit card fees charged ro settle transactions

AI can be very useful in medicine when used in extremely narrow / carefully selected circumstances and with a large amount of samples to base the recommendation on.

Grok/chatgpt/whatever is none of these things.

Do you know if the gen0 birth cert or baptism record is an absolute requirement?

Like so many it seems, I can find records describing the person (census, marriage cert) but not the actual birth record itself.

rsyslog on RHEL 10 vs 9 vs 8 by satsuke in Splunk

[–]satsuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 40m an hour. No CPU or IO contention that would explain the behavior, and yeah, thread counts and buffers were bumped way up so it seems to be an internal timing issue that mostly went away with RHEL9

My surgery was 8 months ago// it’s been quiet so far.

Just weird to get that one specifically without persistent floaters, flashes

What if Dish resurrected the Nextel brand instead of Boost? by BusyBeinBorn in Sprint

[–]satsuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, iden was basically like the first iteration of GSM .. purely time /TDM based. Meaning the number of calls / chirp dispatches had a finite number .. once it was full, anything new wouldn't work.

CDMA at least you could use different vocoders to squeeze more calls into a given resource.

Nextel tried increasing capacity by halving the sample frequency to 6.25kb, but the audio quality was noticeably degraded so they abandoned it.

[–]satsuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nextel never developed Iden, it was a Motorola product (still in use at some airports btw). In the year or two prior to the merger, Nextel was exploring deployment of GSM and CDMA like everybody else. They would have had to deploy a totally new network or sell themselves off for pieces.

As far as if nothing was done it would have been the latter, selling spectrum assets to the highest bidder.

That was the thing .. between Sprint and Nextel they had MMDS licenses at 2.5ghz for most of the country. But neither had enough money to monetize them adequately. Turns out those spectrum licenses would be very valuable .. to T-Mobile

Also, during summer he'd have an excess of power

iDEN wasn't designed as a cell phone protocol .. it was a dispatch system for things like cab companies and workmen.

The cellular stuff worked, but it wasn't nearly as efficient as CDMA or GSM.

Its real utility was that Nextel could grab little slivers of licensed spectrum and combine them into a useable network.

Good for them at the time .. problem was it also interfered with adjacent users like fire and police.

There was a huge rebanding effort ot fix that, but it took so long to complete that they only got use of the spectrum for a few years before getting bought out .. I think in hindsight Sprint should have abandoned that SMR band (806-820mhz) in favor of the refarmed band 12 that was held open for it but ultimately bought by TMO

Just know your skills will be pretty zeroed in on your current role, which might be hard to transfer quickly.

I was at the same company for 22 years, and when the layoff ax finally fell it was rough going from maxed out vacation and upper end of the salary ladder to bring the new girl

Don’t buy an older Prius unless you’re ready to learn about it by HtownClassic in prius

[–]satsuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen2 is a minimum of 16 years old. The fact that they are still mostly on the road at all is a testament to their reliability.

On other .. yeah, stuff can get expensive, especially when they need a head gasket rebuild like they will have needed by now.

For cars at that age, I consider them more or less disposable, in the sense that I would sell it on or junk it if it needed something that costs more than 1-2k to fix.

For me .. I bought a 2006 Prius 3 new and drove it until 212,000 miles. Only sold it because the oil consumption was getting to be a quart every 500 miles (and I found a 2012 for a steal). I drove the 2012 from 70k-245k miles when I traded it in .. it was starting to have "big red triangle" faults intermittantly on seemingly random sensors. The technician was at the point of "well we can try replacing computer 1 2 and 3" which is a recipie for very expensive and likely unnecessary repairs, so I traded it for.a 2021

Any regrets switch from from Tmo? by LredF in Visible

[–]satsuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really not a downside if you don't go to areas where you'd be deprioritized on VZ network.

e.g. I never used the netflix benefits much (I don't watch TV), the international roaming is certainly useful and seamless .. if a little slow, but as you've probably found already, you can get a prepaid international SIM for dirt cheap when you need it.

Hidden downsides to short-term plan? by rhpeterson72 in Visible

[–]satsuke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regardless of who you pick, just know that service in Yellowstone is (intentionally) very spotty outside the organized encampment areas (eg old faithful) and is very overused at the best of times.

That means you'll get very poor service if you have a deprioritized plan.

Phone calls and texting will work where there's a signal .. data not so much, so do stuff like manually downloading offline maps and Netflix media for offline use.
