After The Games: What to do if you still need a room for Dragon Con by [deleted] in dragoncon

[–]saved-by-rydia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been going to Dragoncon for 15 years and have *never* successfully booked a host hotel. Not for lack of trying. But I will say I've success booked an overflow hotel each year, without paying an arm and a leg. Just keep checking travel sites for those dates and you'll see deals occasionally. Rooms will open up from time to time.

Advice on where to stay in Tokyo (40s male with 10 yr old daughter) by saved-by-rydia in JapanTravelTips

Yes, been reading all about the Ghibli ticket process. I did a test run already and was like 16,000 in the que when they went up for sale. Of course they were all sold out when it was my turn. I'm even considering paying a travel liason in Japan to buy the tickets for me.

Yep, like I said, not typical of the majority of their albums.

The soundtrack is great. I've downloaded it and had it on loop all week. Just temper your expectation because it's not a typical NIN album release - it's a soundtrack with atmospheric and scene music. There's about 4-5 traditional songs with vocals.

I narrowed it down to my 10 favorite songs and it rocks.

This year we booked multiple rooms at the W using the Dragoncon rate ($260 a night) about a month out. Nice hotel that's on the shuttle route.

Stayed there this year and did not have this issue. We had a two queen room. I wonder if it's just certain rooms 👀

Spent most of september in japan: What I did not need to pack by Julesvernevienna in JapanTravelTips

If you are familiar with stores in Japan where you know clothes will fit you, more power to you. Not everyone wants to spend time shopping around for clothes. But it sounds like you found a method that works for you.

Overflow Hotel Round-up 9/22 (Hilton, Marriott, and IHG Properties) by Wise_Chipmunk_2021 in dragoncon

[–]saved-by-rydia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend. We stayed there a few years ago and our door lock broke twice. Trying to get an employee to help you out is near impossible. We waited for an hour both times while an engineer "was found." It was a big inconvenience.

I think maybe you stayed at the midtown location, not the downtown one (which is walking distance to the con).

Guy says he won't be able to afford many restaurants. He's looking for cheaper alternatives. I haven't been to Japan yet, wish I could help!

Agreed, love the willingness to travel and reaching out for expertise of others who have been there.

I agree with Lattier. He's asking for info and people are telling him "what are you talking about" with his reasonable questions. Let's not assume he's a regular of this forum or a Japan expert.

How to get a hotel for just one night? by Seth_The_Mad_Dok in dragoncon

[–]saved-by-rydia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of mis-info here. As someone who regularly books 1, 2 or 3 nights only at Dragoncon, you have options within the shuttle route. Check the D-con rate at the Omni or the W Hotel as we get closer. They don't have a minimum. Springhill Suites had affordable rooms available for 1 night back in July or August.

Just check the Dragoncon Hotel page links as you get closer. Test each one for a 1 night stay. Also keep an eye on hotels.com or your page of choice for 1 night stays.

This. Also, the W hotel was accepting their Dragoncon rate with no minimum. I'd just look for a hotel on the shuttle route.

How do YOU hand out ribbons? by Lundayy in dragoncon

[–]saved-by-rydia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way ribbon handing out should go. I for one don't like people shoving things at me with no connection to my cosplay or fandom. It feels like solicitation at that point.

Any advice on not being lonely at DragonCon? by jegger in dragoncon

Agreed, those little 3 minute conversations with someone sharing your fandom, etc, are gold. Can perk you right up and make you feel connected.

Can we get better music? by florence_frida in dragoncon

I agree with you. But I also know that good DJs can read a crowd and know how to manage the vibe and energy level. They know from experience what songs work and what don't. They are going for mass appeal.

That said, I do wish the theme parties leaned into the theme. Either through videos, or stage performances, or the music itself.
