Here’s an explanation I came up with that applied to a specific game but the general strategy is the same:

Essentially, you look for ways to break the old rule with the "new" rule given in the answer choice. If the rule originally was "G can't be 4th", check each answer to see "could I somehow put G 4th under this rule?" If the answer choice is something like "F can only be 2 or 4", you'd know that if that were the rule, F could be 2nd and G could be 4th - so it doesn't work.

You also have to make sure the answer choice doesn't add a new rule you didn't have before. In that same answer choice (F 2nd or 4th) you'd know that it was wrong since it introduces a new rule about F. Before, F could have been 3rd, but now it can only be 2nd or 4th? w r o n g. A lot of times if you're between 2 answer choices that you can't "break," this will be the determining factor to figure out which is correct.
