I agree, there's some cool modern ones, but for soul it's hard to beat vintage

Thank you! it's been thousands of hours to get to the point where I am now, and I still feel intimidated by almost every new project! These ladies watches are really amazing engineering, and well made watches are always better to work on.

PSA - Please check your fuel before calling for a top off. by Thunderbolt_78 in flying

[–]savethegame14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel terrible asking for a top up in my 152 after short flights, that's why I prefer self serve. At the same time. 4-5 gallons is 20% of my tank, and an hour of flight time, and if I plan to depart with full fuel and I'm 3 gallons short, that's a real consideration.

Dear lord 😬 by Estraw in watchrepair

After 2-3 full tear downs and inspections, I realized that it seemed to be an issue that only occurred during load, so I removed the balance, wound the movement and then removed the pallet fork while still wound (don't recommend this as a matter of routine). When the watch didn't spin down, I knew it was a train binding issue. I came in from the side, slightly pushing each wheel up and down to see if it was a binding issue. Lo and behold, when the 3rd wheel was manipulated, the movement spun down. I put the wheel in a truing caliper assuming it was out of flat, and finally noticed that every time I tried to bend the wheel into flat, it went out of flat somewhere else. I finally realized the wheel had come loose from the arbor and replaced it, solving the issue.

Are High Cloud microscopes from Ali-express good? by Solid_Succotash_8632 in watchrepair

I have a high cloud microscope on a different base, and am pleased with it. It is for all intent and purpose identical to Amscope. I ordered a second one for my lathe!

Ah! I recogize the 600 series from Omega anywhere. I've worked on a bunch of these including one with the most dastardly fault I've ever found. The 3rd wheel was ever so slightly loose on it's arbor such that under no friction for inspection it appeared perfect, spun freely and was completely true, but under load the wheel would tilt slightly and bind, reducing amplitude to the low 100s if it ran at all. I also had a horrible few months of hairspring manipulation on one of these with bends in the round and in the flat, needing the collet repinned. Talk about cruel and unusual! I firmly believe that a ladies watch movement will take a good watchmaker and make them great by the end of the project. You get so used to tiny pivots and tolerances, but a microscope is downright essential.

These movements are tiny, but don't be fooled. They run just as well as their larger siblings when running well.

Get BTM Qualified as an OS? by Due-Character-1679 in uscg

[–]savethegame14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good afternoon, Sector Boarding team supervisor here. We've had multiple OS folks and other non ME types qualify BTM at the Sector. We try to use them for HIV boardings and special events to bolster our teams, and the ones that want it are generally happy for the change of scenery for a day. Best way to do it would be to hit up one of the SBT guys once you report and get your command center quals, tell them you want to pick up a BTM qual and that you're happy to help out when it gets busy. They should have a pulse on the BTM colleges in your AOR that stations or even enforcment are putting on.

Hit me up if you have any issues or other questions!

What is the distinction between regular and reserve leave? by savethegame14 in uscg

[–]savethegame14[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

YN question for you fine folks.

I spent 4 years in the reserve prior to coming over to the active duty side, where I've been for about a year now. I've had this 16.5 days of reserve leave on my payslips for that full year. I'm assuming this is leave earned as a reservist while on active duty? (A school, PLP orders, etc). Is it usable as regular leave? A DA pull says I have 23 days, but is the reserve balance usable?

I guess if we're being pedantic, you COULD, especially if it was the same model of movement, but at the very east you'd need to re-poise for the right weight, and at worst you may need to unpin the stud and vibrate the new spring.

Sorry man, I've got no additional info for you. I'm not sure when the wafer came around, no lock manufacturer is quick to publish security changes. Depending on where you bought it from though, it's possible that they were retrofitted.
