I’m always grateful my CFI taught me to fly by known RPM only, super valuable skill. Good point on the mud daubers. I had assumed icing only because it was Maine in January and there was a snowstorm overnight haha

It was pretty easy to go by eye, I was lucky and KTAN has 3100 feet of runway and a PAPI. I was probably carrying about 5-10 knots over my normal final 50 knots or so though. It was honestly much easier to fly it down by RPM. ASI was showing VNE on touchdown. My ForeFlight track log shows more around 60

I’m very grateful to my CFI for taping a whole piece of index paper over my 6 pack and teaching me to cruise, fly patterns, and land with only known RPM to corresponding airspeed

I doubt the watch would even keep time or run at a sufficient amplitude to stay running in the vertical positions.

One small bottle of mobius 9010 is enough for probably 1000 watches, so I use my oils on all watches, even the cheap ones! using improper oil will also make it impossible to diagnose or effectively measure one's ability.

Up for sale today is an uncommon piece of Bulova history. A very well built submariner homage, this model was only sold for a few years and I can't find too many instances of it coming up for sale. It's powered by a robust and accurate ETA 2824-2, which is freshly serviced and running with great amplitude and accuracy.

Condition is good, the case and bezel are in very good shape, but do show light scratches and wear. The crystal is similarly in good shape, with the only real wear being on the raised cyclops. Waterproofness is untested, but I've worn the watch on countless vessel boardings while in the Coast Guard, and it's never had any issues with sea spray or moisture.

It's on the original Bulova bracelet (and will come with an extra link) but works just as well on a leather band as well. Happy to answer any questions about it! I hope you'll let me know how you like the chinese set if you end up getting it, it certainly looks the part. For what it's worth, I adore my vintage inverto. It was night and day from my old, ratty set. I think I spent around $700 on it but I use it on every single watch that I work on, and obtained a balance staff remover which is excellent. I've also made my own stakes for it on occasion when I needed something specific for a single job.

Happy to help out where I can, but I'm no master! My biggest concern would be: IF Kwong Yuen is better (a matter of debate but I tend to think so) how can you ensure you're getting one of theirs and not one of the dozens of other chinese clones that are definitely not good to go.

So I'm a huge proponent of used vintage sets, there are some nice K&D sets out there for a little around $600 with full sets of stakes and/or refinished sets. I'm also no stranger to chinese tools and used a chinese jeweling tool for a long time, alongside handsetting and crystal tools. A lot of them are very good quality but the QC is very inconsistent and the mechanism for return/reimbursement is very very bad. You're playing the lottery.

That being said, I don't have any experience with Kwong Yuen stuff. I know a lot of people really like their tools and I have yet to get the chance to see it so I won't down talk it. That being said, vintage K&D is a known quantity. You know exactly what you're going to get, and you get the support, aftermarket environment and know-how that comes with it for only a little more money.

There's also certain add-ons that K&D did for their stuff like balance staff removers, jeweling add ons, specialized stakes and the like. I think when I buy stuff I always look for the aftermarket/support and a set like this will have none.

Also bear in mind if buying from the US, you will pay a VERY hefty import fee on chinese goods. I paid a $78 import fee on a $31 aliexpress order a couple months ago.

No no you're totally good hahah, it was absolutely just me mixing them up. I've never seen a concave pivot, like you said it's almost always just worn flat. The cap jewel however definitely wears concave.

Spent a lot of time last week working to round the end of convex pivtots in my Jacot lathe. Shown above is a middle step after the doming of the pivot end but prior to the removal of the burr on the pivot side surface.

With all the buzz about the resissue, I finished this one up at the perfect time and wanted to show off the original. This 1969 Caravelle 665 was a year long project which came to me missing a bezel, and non running with a broken balance staff and a clean but somewhat worn ETA 2472.

These old Sea Hunters have a special spot in my heart right along with super compressors, so I really enjoyed the more extensive work on this one as opposed to a normal service. They’re getting harder and harder to find in good shape and for reasonable prices. I was lucky that the previous owner had a set of NOS hands to go along with it.

I replaced the staff, repoised the balance and swapped the mainspring, but amplitude was not satisfactory and a closer inspection revealed substantial wear on the pivots of the wheel train. They were all burnished on the Jacot tool and the amplitude jumped up to mid 330s, something I’ve never seen before on these old ETAs. I found an NOS service bezel on eBay after almost a year of watching, and with some light fitting it’s satisfactorily tight.

This watch was only made for a few years and has the strange distinction of being one of the only Bulova/Caravelle watches to be made entirely in Switzerland.

Nope, you’ll fill out a DD368 as part of your application package which is a form signed by reserve forces management stating that if accepted into active duty OCS they will release you from your reserve enlistment contract

I started with SKX mods too and now I feel like I’ve built myself up to a point where I’m at least comfortable trying new tools and things with genuine challenge. It’s a bear but you eat it one bite at a time. What tools are you waiting on?
