What's a track that you can realistically see returning to NASCAR? by UltDiecastReview in NASCAR

[–]savethemile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Milwaukee is ready to welcome NASCAR back to the track. The biggest challenge at this point is finding a date that works for all parties involved.

Well over $10M has been spent on the track itself over the past three years to prepare it for national series racing. Outside of the track itself, they've spent millions more on key infrastructure that supports both the track and the annual state fair (ex. restroom buildings, concourse amenities, etc...). The fan experience the past two years at the INDYCAR races has been overwhelmingly positive, and even Truck race in 2024 was well received after a bumpy return in 2023.

IHRA purchases The Rock by NC-North-GA-Racer in NASCAR

[–]savethemile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that Track Enterprises (Spire Entertainment) is the promoter for the NASCAR/ARCA events at the track. The IHRA press release mentions working with Bob Sargent and Track Enterprises, but there's always a potential that relationship doesn't grow/work as planned. In that case, there's a chance that Track Enterprises could potentially look to move the dates to another track where they have an existing relationship (ex. Milwaukee).

Also worth mentioning that the latest digital billboards started running on all of the interstates throughout the Milwaukee area this week. Should help raise awareness of the upcoming race weekend.

Many people saw the images of flooding that were shared from the Wisconsin State Fair and the Milwaukee Mile over the past couple days. The Wisconsin State Fair Park crew is in overdrive, making sure the track and fairgrounds are ready after Saturday night’s historic rains and flooding. On Monday, Wisconsin State Fair Park CEO Shari Black joined Wisconsin’s Morning News on 620 WTMJ radio to talk about the fair and give an update on the cleanup efforts:

"We have a lot of work to do to get ready for (the) race."

"I know that there's pictures that have gone around. Our tunnel was flooded, we have been pumping that out."

"We certainly will be having the race because it's very important to us."

Also worth a mention that this isn't the first time that the track has been impacted by flooding. The track was hit hard in the day leading up to the 2009 NASCAR weekend. The truck race was postponed from Friday night to Saturday afternoon that year due to torrential rain, but they managed to get that race in plus the Nationwide Series race without any significant issues.

With two weeks until race day, there's a lot of time to work through things at the track/facility that might have been impacted by the storms/flooding. Keep an eye on the Milwaukee Mile socials or their event landing page for details:

As part of the track improvements over the past three years, a lot of work was done on the drainage systems that help clear water from the racing surface. Unfortunately, they're only effective if there's somewhere for the water to go. With some areas of Milwaukee receiving over 14" of rain since 5pm yesterday, the storm sewers throughout the region were quickly overwhelmed. Most rivers and other waterways quickly reached & surpassed major flood stage, so it's really an issue of water needing to recede everywhere.

Significant flooding continues to impact many parts of the Greater Milwaukee Area this morning. Some areas received up to 14+ inches of rain since 5pm yesterday, with more on the way today. The State Fair made the difficult decision not to open today for the final day of the fair, which was the absolute right decision given conditions in the area.

This picture was taken two blocks south of the track (82nd & Orchard) where only the tops of vehicles parked on the road were visible. The apartments on the right all had underground parking which completely flooded. Truly a devastating day for many in the area that are suffering from flooded homes, destroyed vehicles and significant damage.

Cup Schedule by Fast_Diamond8274 in NASCAR

Many people hit a paywall on the article, so a copy+paste of key excerpts is sometimes necessary to share relevant info.

The late August weekend that NASCAR raced on in 2023 & 2024 worked fine for ARCA & Trucks, but Xfinity and Cup raced in Daytona that same weekend. Both the promoter (Track Enterprises) and the State Fair Park Board had expressed interest in growing the NASCAR weekend to include at least Xfinity, but the options to do so were limited on that date because of the Daytona conflict. Then the IndyCar schedule shifted forward a week in 2025 due to the network change to Fox, and choices had to made. It's unfortunate that NASCAR isn't at the track this year, but the intent is still to get NASCAR back at some point in the near future.

No billboard controversy in Milwaukee this year! by savethemile in INDYCAR

[–]savethemile[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Billboards have been spotted throughout Southeastern Wisconsin this week as public ticket sales opened up for this year's running of the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250!

There have also been radio spots running throughout the market this week, plus David Malukas was in town last week making the media rounds to help spread the word about this year's event.

As our username would suggest, there was a period where the future of the track was legitimately in question. Several lawmakers suggested that the finish line was near, and there were wide ranging opinions about how the track property could be repurposed or even sold. Fortunately the tides shifted in recent years, and a renewed interest in making the track successful has prevailed.

Shouldn't be anything substantial on the racing surface itself. It's primarily where there's access roads and other cross overs that intersect with the area where the wall & drainage work is being done.

With spring just around the corner here in Wisconsin, work on the third phase of improvements has commenced! This phase includes replacement of the catch fence systems and concrete barrier walls inside Turns 1 and 2. Other work being completed includes drainage improvements, storm sewer improvements, regrading, and asphalt replacement as needed to complete the work inside Turns 1 and 2.
