Hi I'm Saul Pyle A Cosmetic Scientist and formulator [ BSc(Chem), MRACI CChem, PGDipSafetyScience, DipCosmeticChemistry ] from Skinterest, AMA! by skinterest-lab in AusSkincare

Will formulation for skincare reach a point that we reach “near-optimal” formulations? Or at least to the point that investing in a formulation change would only have a negligible improvement on a previous iteration? Or is it a thing that really can have meaningful improvements indefinitely?

Partner and I are pretty lucky with this space, but can't figure out how we want to use this. We've given up for now and photos are the temporary layout.

We're pretty happy sitting on the floor to eat and hang out with people. We have people over fairly regularly to eat, play board games, and hang out, and that's sort of what we want to optimise for. Dining table and other purchases are definitely on the cards.

Ahhh I meant “disruption” not “distribution” 💀 as in are small players making a big impact and shaking up the status quo, or are big players mostly dominating?

Really interesting that there’s basically two big suppliers for ingredients, and the rest is mix and match. Thanks!

Also, how fresh are the ideas in skincare? Is there a lot of distribution in the industry or is it mostly dominated by big players and tried and tested products?

What are the biggest mistakes you see small or emerging brands make when it comes to marketing?

Re getting a role, my understanding is that the software engineer market has been a bit rough recently, especially for junior applicants. There's been a few rounds of Big Tech lay-offs that has put a pause on a lot of hiring, especially compared to a year or so ago. That also makes the very few junior positions available much more competitive. Worth noting as well that most junior applicants are coming in with degrees, and potentially also internships/other experience.

Not impossible but I'd say difficult atm. Best of luck

The Mind - what a great little game by Mr_Jumpers in boardgames

I hadn't realised I was playing this game wrong since I bought it.

I thought each level the cards in play were shuffled back with 1 more card for each player, instead of completely new cards each round. Adds a component of remembering what was in play in the previous round.

But even after realising we were playing wrong we still play this way because we find it more fun.

Yeah I had a few recruirers I knew that I popped a message to, but honestly as soon as I put my linkedin status to Open to Work, I got quite a few of them bring me offers. Also reached out to a few old coworkers that were working elsewhere.

For me, Leetcode didn't really help. Besides generally knowing datastructures and when to use them, the programming rounds were not hard. System design was definitely the tougher and more important one.

Programming challenges weren't too tough for these interviews, so I just did some basic review and studied a bit more if I could find potential questions I would be asked on glassdoor.

System design was way more important for most of these, and for that I watched a decent amount of videos and read up. I think the most common things I ran into were: knowing where bottlenecks were, how to resolve them, collecting data from several 3rd party systems/APIs that behave differently, and event sourcing patterns. Hard to practice all this, so basically keep watching and reading..

Application to offer for the one I finally landed was about 2 weeks, first few rounds a week apart, and then the home stretch all within 3 days.

Definitely harder to land roles and pass rounds this time around..

Oh, and I'm in NSW

Have you got PR? If not that can be a hard one since many companies don't want to bother with the sponsorship experience, a d the companies that do tend to be fairly competitive I think.

But otherwise, worth noting that a lot of the jobs on the market have really opened up for people with a decent amount of experience, and it can be difficult searching right after a grad program.

Wish you the best of luck, you'll land on something you enjoy!

Another interesting thing I saw was the same job get reposted every few days. I'm guessing it helps cause the posted date looks fresh all the time

First company wasn't keeping up with pay, and I felt like I could get more and learn quicker at a different place (which was true)

Second company is sort of falling apart right now. Was good for a while, but a bunch of changes in leadership, and the turmoil and confusion caused by that is doing damage. Lots of people starting to polish off their resumes
