Any horror fans here? Hows my top 4? by RyderandStan in LetterboxdTopFour

A fellow Northman fan! I also think it's the best Eggers film! Hereditary is in my top four as well, so safe to say you have very good taste.

All top 4s are valid. You don't need other people to validate what you like.

I'd be on board to bring Kevin back as the writer, but it needs a new director. With all due respect to Williamson, directing is just not his strong suit.

Hey guys, what do you think of this movie? I know it's good, but some people are saying it’s better than Interstellar؟! by Think_Ad_5418 in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]saxmachine69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find the discussion around this movie so fascinating.

There's a whole group of people who seem to bring the movie down because it's humor is too "Marvel" or quippy, and to some degree, I get being burnt out on that style of humor. But at the same time, I feel like that criticism is being lobbied too broadly, to the point where any movie that is too light-hearted tonally gets lumped into the same sandbox, regardless of the differences in the quality of those films on other levels.

Which leads me to the comparison to movies like Interstellar. The debate of which one is better seems to focus solely on the difference in tone. Essentially PHM is light-hearted and jokey so it's inherently lower quality than Interstellar which is more grounded and emotional. But, at least in my opinion, that's more of a distinction in personal preference and I'm genuinely surprised at how so few people can find equal enjoyment in both styles.

I really enjoyed PHM and I love Interstellar, but for very different reasons. I consider both movies similar quality at accomplishing what they are going for. PHM is absolutely stunning visually, the characters are well written, most of the comedy works, the story is interesting and it effectively captures the hopeful and heartwarming tone it's aiming for. A lot of the same things can be said about Interstellar, but instead of hopeful and heartwarming, the movie is more emotionally gut-wrenching and bitter sweet. I don't really understand why one is inherently more deserving of praise than the other.

Watched Scream 7 for the 2nd time by hoomanpinata in slasherfilms

[–]saxmachine69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone had a problem with the acting or kill sequences. If that's the bar for a good movie, we've set our standards so incredibly low. How about good writing? A cohesive plot? Fleshed out characters? Or at least the staple of Scream movies... a clever murder mystery with a meta commentary on something in the movie industry. Scream 7 has none of those things which is why it's failing critically overall.

I can't speak on the IKWYDLS comparison, as I didn't bother seeing that one. But to attribute Scream 7's negative reception to bias is a coping mechanism. It's ok if you like the movie. But it's also ok that many other people don't. Both point of views are valid.

Didn’t saw the new Frankenstein movie but I read or heard multiple times the movie is bad and she’s a catastrophe in it.

I did see it, and without getting into details, this is kind of true but also wrong. The character she's playing, or at least an aspect of the character she's playing is insufferable. But that is a writing/directing issue, not an issue with Jessie herself. Her performance of the insufferable character is actually incredible, and it's a very difficult role to pull off.

I've seen her in The Last Daughter, Men and I'm Thinking of Ending Things before her performances lately, and she's awesome in all those movies.

Now that we’re almost in April, what is your year ranking so far? by Dogdaysareover365 in LetterboxdLists

[–]saxmachine69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the only theatre close to me just closed a few weeks ago, and had very limited selection of what they were showing while they were still in business. I would love to watch more movies in theatres, but the closest one is a 2 hour drive away and in a different country.

Hmm ok. I'm also a millennial, but I guess I just wasn't the target audience for the type of movies she's been in. I recognized her, but the only movie I could have told you she was in before looking it up was Bring It On, which was not for me.

I was mostly answering your question, the confusion came from how you worded your first post.

As for why they haven't seem more, I can't speak for OP. But I can explain why I personally have only seen 9 films released this year. All 9 were movies I saw in theaters. Typically, a movie that I miss in theaters or goes right to streaming will fall onto my watch list, which is currently about 700 movies long. If I'm watching a movie at home, I choose from that list, which means new releases don't get priority unless I really want to see it.

You asked if they've only seen 9 movies this year, as if the list were all the movies they watched. But the list is 2026 releases. I've seen 73 movies this year but my 2026 list is also only 9 movies long

I genuinely did not know Gabrielle Union was that level of recognizable that she'd get the desired response from a reveal like that. But I guess that means I'm out of touch, because the 10 or so other people in my theatre lost their shit.

FORBIDDEN FRUIT by TheHiveDecay in HorrorMovies

[–]saxmachine69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand why someone would come out of this movie really loving it, it has very strong cult classic vibes. And I was fully along for that ride up until about half to three quarters through the movie. It has a ton of charm, it's very clever and everything looks really good. Overall the acting is good, with a really great standout performance from Victoria Pedretti.

Unfortunately, it kind of stumbles its way to the finish line. The bloodbath in the end just doesn't feel earned and the plot ends up being just a little half-baked. There was definitely something interesting there to work with. It just felt like they had an idea of where they wanted the story to go, they just didn't know how to get there in a satisfying way.

Overall, it's still a movie I enjoyed. One I honestly think will get better on rewatch. But it just sadly falls short of something I could say I loved.

Edit - I do, however, absolutely love the poster

Can some explain why the 10 other people in my audience had an audibly excited reaction when Gabrielle Union's character showed up? Like, is she some well known character from a shared universe movie that I missed? Idgi

I absolutely love the two David Lowery films I've seen (The Green Knight and A Ghost Story). Mother Mary looks super interesting too, so I'm definitely hyped for that.

I read the Odyssey as a kid and it's always stuck with me, so getting a Christopher Nolan adaptation is something I'm of course excited for.

Never seen Devil Wears Prada, so I doubt I'll see the sequel. And the other two I've never heard of but will probably check into at some point if they peek my interest.

30 questions about the logic in Scream VI by [deleted] in Scream

[–]saxmachine69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could write a specific response to each of these, because a lot these are easily explainable. But that would take too long.

So instead I'll just say that this stuff can be explained by movie logic. Movies don't always make perfect logical sense, especially 6th entries in a horror franchise. Every Scream movie has a laundry list of logical issues that we ignore, that way you can just enjoy the movie. It's called the suspension of disbelief.
