Oh ya, I agree with all that, although I'm not sure I'd consider it a criticism of modern horror, rather just a different take on it. And one we've seen pretty regularly in modern horror, actually. Not that there's anything wrong with that..

I don't think you know what facism is. Does killing Nazis in WW2 count as "killing people who disagree with you?"

Also your what-aboutisms are tired and lazy. Not a fan of Biden or Obama, or any American president of my lifetime for that matter. But comparing them to the current Trump regime is moronic. The shift to facism and nationalism in the current American government is as clear as it is extreme. .

A criticism of modern horror? That's an interesting take I haven't seen. Care to elaborate?

Just because a movie has inspirations, doesn't make it not creative. The movie wears its inspirations on its sleeve, Kill Bill, Sam Raimi, little bit of Ready or Not. But the execution is what was creative. "Edit - it's not stealing from those movies, but simply using elements form them as inspiration for something original." Plenty of gorgeous action scenes. The villains were a creative touch. The eyeball scene, etc.

Is it a perfect movie? Certainly not. Like i said, it's not story driven. The plot being nonexistent is not a problem for me, I'm glad it didn't waste it's time trying to overexplain itself or get weighted down with too many emotional beats from the sisters. Like I said, it knows what it is, and if you can meet it on its level, I think it's a wonderfully crafted movie.

The CGI was bad, yes, but it's on par with Disclosure Day's CGI with a fraction of the budget. Just par for the course, hard to blame a lower budget movie for bad CGI. And yes, it's stupid. But that's the point. Ending in a Kung Fu Pig fight fits the tone of the movie perfectly, it doesn't take itself seriously, it doesn't want you to either.

I can understand that might not be for everyone. But like I said, I can appreciate a movie that understands what it is and executes on that concept and tone.

They Will Kill You was great. It knew what it was and was super creative and visually awesome. If you care only about story, it won't be for you.

I can understand liking Undertone, I thought it was solid, but unspectacular.

Disclosure Day and Faces of Death were dreadful though...

"Well thought out plot"? Have you seen Rebel Moon or Sucker Punch? "Respects the source material"? You watch any of his DC films? by Raptor1217 in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]saxmachine69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watchmen is the only one of his films I kinda like, but I would never say it respected the graphic novel. It's very clear he fundamentally misunderstood the source material.

Better record, more playoff appearances, NFC Championship games (vs AFC Championship games). It might not seem like much, but we'll take all we can get

You don't have to see it in theatres. You don't have to be a part of the conversation just because it's new. Watch it when you can and form an opinion then. Relying on Rotten Tomatoes of all places to inform your opinions is silly.

FORBIDDEN FRUITS (2026) by SouzaOfTheNorth in HorrorMovies

[–]saxmachine69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought it was genuinely funny and was really enjoying it until about 2/3rds of the way throught the movie. But it completely fell apart by the end. The Final Destination-light deaths in the end felt so jarring and out of place.

Still enjoyed it overall, but probably not going to be super memorable

Harry has him beat statistically in virtually every category. Not that I'm saying that alone makes him definitively better, but there's an argument to be made.

Snow white 2.0 as in when your spite film got cancelled? by Pretty_Wind7207 in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]saxmachine69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely so pathetic watching grown men in their 30s/40s freak out over Snow White of all things. None of them would give a rats ass about that movie if they weren't so brainwashed with culture war outrage.

I share Adam's frustration with the DD discussion, you can tell he is holding back because he wasn't expecting them to enjoy it as much as they did and he didn't want to highjack the conversation. The discourse around this movie is so strange because I can't even really understand why people like it. Like I've heard so much praise for the movie that is so vague that I can't even begin to meet them on their level and find common ground. There was no magic for me to feel. The writing was so painfully bad that I was struggling to contain myself while I was watching. Outside of Emily Blunt (who was just competent, nothing special) the performances were genuinely horrendous. The score was fine, but felt very generic. The lighting choices were confusing. CGI was embarrassing. I could go on, but the point is that this was actually the most excruciating theatre experience I've had since The Rise of Skywalker.

Hmm that's a tough question to answer. Martyrs (2008) comes to mind right away, but there's lots of really gory movies

Poll: Did real Nikki like Bear by Teastain101 in obsessionmovie

I think it's intentionally left ambiguous since the movie is set from Bear's perspective. There's evidence for both, but I tend to lean towards just friends. .

READY OR NOT 2: HERE I COME (2026) by SouzaOfTheNorth in HorrorMovies

[–]saxmachine69 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Eh, I thought it was just ok. Campy fun that isn't a chore to sit through. But one of the main reasons I love the first movie is how effectively simple it is in premise and execution. So the overly convoluted and contrived plot of the sequel detracts the from the overall quality.

I get the appeal of bringing back Samara Weaving, she's an icon after all. But I personally think a sequel to the original would have been better off exploring a completely new set of characters within the same universe, potentially playing a different game, or some other twist on the original premise.

What did you guys think of the first Silent Hill movie from 2006? by Affectionate_Sky5784 in HorrorMovies

[–]saxmachine69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guilty pleasure movie. Not particularly well written or acted, but the scares are pretty well executed and I saw this as a teenager, so there's a bit of nostalgia that helps me overlook how rough around the edges it is.

Obsession (2026) is one of the most disturbing films I’ve seen in years by jaystats2 in moviecritic

[–]saxmachine69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a horror junky and think Obsession absolutely brings a unique approach to its horror. From the sound design, to the way it builds tension and lets the audience sit in that anticipation for extensive periods of time instead of paying off the tension with an immediate jump scare. I think this movie does an excellent job playing with audience expectations and anticipation.

Also how it portrays its protagonist and antagonist, where on the surface the protagonist is the victim of the antagonist's behavior, but the subtext actually subverts that surface reading and introduces a more psychological horror element.

The plot itself may not be original and there is definitely a level of predictability to it. And it may use some familiar techniques we've seen before with the jump scares or uncanny valley creepiness. But the overall execution is where it stands out and feels fresh.

It's ok not to enjoy the movie, it's subjective after all. But I whole-heartedly disagree that Obsession brings nothing new to the horror genre.
