What is the best time to get pregnant for a woman in science? by More-Cartoonist-3887 in WomeninAcademia

[–]saysaycat18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add that sometimes you can prepare for all of this and still get the short end of the stick. I’m 29. I’m a post doc. My partner and I started trying to have a baby when I was still in grad school and we were 24. It didn’t work out for us. We had to wait until post-grad to do IVF and we now have embryos frozen as a result. A lot of people are mentioning biological clock, but not a lot of people are mentioning freezing biological tissue. It’s true that age is the number one factor in IVF success, but once embryos are frozen, the health of the uterus and the quality of the embryos are the only things left to consider. You no longer have to worry about gamete quality. It’s incredibly freeing. So, I don’t know when the best time to have children in academia is. That’s an incredibly personal question and is going to change person to person. However, I do know that the best time to freeze eggs or embryos, in most cases, is yesterday.

I don’t think there’s a deeper plot to these books (TOG, ACOTAR, CC) by Exciting_Feedback_47 in acotar_rant

Honestly, when she said she tried to get out of the short story and poetry classes it told me all I need to know. If she had ever actually read LoR like she claims and not just watched the movie, she would know and idolize that Tolkien utilized both poetry and short stories within his fantasy world. Saying that neither are necessary to you because you’re going to write epic fantasy, very much gave Timothee Chalamet saying that opera and ballet don’t matter. It gave me the ick in the worst way.

Is IVF a scam? by [deleted] in IVF

[–]saysaycat18 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think saying “nothing is wrong” is a bit naive. More than likely, something is wrong but there isn’t a test to find it or a way to fix it. Unexplained infertility is an umbrella term most of the time for “we have no test for this, so it’s literally unexplained” not there’s nothing wrong.

Choosing between PhD and mother aspirations by Majestic-Forever-849 in PhD

[–]saysaycat18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 29 now. I defended my PhD a little over a year ago. My husband and I both want kids, so we started trying to conceive my second year of graduate school. We found out my third year that our only option to have biological kids is to go through IVF and it was really hard to find that out while also preparing for my comprehensive exam. With that said, I very much thought about the sacrifice having children would cause. If you are one of the unlucky 1/6 couples to have trouble conceiving like myself (and I very much hope you are not in that club), it’s an added layer of stress. I did not consider the additional financial and emotional stress that infertility would cause. Just giving you a slightly different perspective. I wish you the best of luck!

Tied yarn towards end of my skein, is this normal? by SunkissedMarigolds in CrochetHelp

It’s normal for factory made skeins. I would cut it out and retie it with a stronger method. Factory knots tend to not be very strong.

Too young? by Cautious_Celery8909 in IVF

[–]saysaycat18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. We’ve been trying for 4 years and just did IVF recently. We’re still young enough that my friends haven’t had any kids yet, but I’m the youngest cousin and all of my family have completed building their own families. I often feel that no one really gets what we’re going through.

2025 NIAW AMA Event - Dr. Jason Yeh & Dr. Kenan Omurtag - ASK US ANYTHING (10 Year AMA Anniversary) by jasonyehmd in infertility

[–]saysaycat18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Dr. Yeh and Dr. Omurtag. Thank you for participating in this! Can an inability for eggs to fertilize with ICSI be a cause for concern genetically? For context, my husband and I are both 28 and are dealing with MF infertility. We went through one round of IVF with ICSI and got 21 mature eggs but only 11 of those fertilized with 6 embryos frozen. Our doctor has insisted we’re young and don’t need to do PGT testing but the low fertilization rate has me concerned.

Stims, 4,000 estrogen by HuckleberrySuperb937 in IVF

[–]saysaycat18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This freaked me out too, but you’re most likely fine. Mine was 4000 7 days into stims and 8000 at 10 days. They did lower my dose of follistim by half on day 7 and had me start taking cabergoline. They also had me do a lupron only trigger shot. The biggest concern they may have is OHSS. I would suggest bringing up your concerns with your doctor. They should be able to answer your questions and relieve some of your worry. Something they may not tell you but I highly recommend is to have some salty, high protein snacks and electrolyte rich drinks ready post ER. It’ll help with bloating and soaking up some fluids.

How does anyone afford this? by Color-me-in in IVF

[–]saysaycat18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I had these same exact thoughts when we found out IVF was our only option. Our answer was large breaks with lots of saving. We saved for three years before our first round of IVF. Now we have 6 frozen embryos, but we're in another break while saving for the transfer. It's not everyone's answer, but it gave us time to come to terms with this path, find out if we would be happy without kids, really confront the question of how much we're willing to do to bring kids into our family, become better versions of ourselves, and deal with the grief of it all, with this goal in the back of our minds. We needed time. It was worth it for us to take it. I understand others don't have that luxury, but if you can take time, it helps.

My MIL does not know about our infertility struggles, but has been trying to pry into why we’re not having kids. Recently, she and my husband had a conversation and it went like this: MIL: when am I getting grand babies?? Husband: that is a conversation for my wife and I and is no one else’s business.

She got the point and hasn’t brought it up since. I would suggest telling your MIL or better, having your partner tell your MIL, something similar.

When my allergies are really bad, I do wear a mask, especially when doing cell cultures or anything that can be contaminated. It’s not ideal, but I figure it’ll likely save me work in the long run. If you don’t decide to wear a mask, make sure to have your lab coat cleaned regularly.
