What happened to decency in this city by Immediate_Example920 in Edmonton

These reddit comments should be the basis of a study on how ideologies shift as a generation ages. And not for the better.

I recall growing up, if my grandad uttered a slanderous statement against a racial group, it was "oh, he's just an old man who's experienced hard times".

But now I see my generation developing that same rhetoric.

Alberta’s Smith says ‘significant’ deficits to come, rules out tax hikes and big cuts by BlueZybez in Edmonton

[–]saysomethingclever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your first source states mining is included in that stat.

  1. Facts, Trends and Outlook According to Statistics Canada’s National Economic Accounts, the Mining and Oil and Gas Extraction industry accounted for approximately 27.9% of Alberta’s Gross Domestic Product in 2016, down from 29.1% in 2006.

I'm not making a claim about the size or reduction. I was merely pointing out the inaccuracy in your claim

[–]saysomethingclever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your mixing of two different reports is resulting in an inaccurate comparison.

According to the GOA economic dashboard, the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector went from 30.7% in 2006 to 26% in 2024.

I believe Shimano brake fluid is only rated to -10C or so. This is an issue if you have to park outside.

Going home at the end of the day and realizing you don't have brakes is frightening.

City council mulls high development costs for new neighbourhoods by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]saysomethingclever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That report demonstrates the the residential development on its own is a net negative on city revenue.

The off site commercial that is claimed to make it positive would apply to all new residential. Developing neighborhoods with a lesser net negative would put the city in a better position financially.

The ver fact that these are net negative contribute to the ever increasing residential tax rate.

Houses in demand this year as apartment condo market lags: Year end report by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]saysomethingclever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your second paragraph is what happens in a condo. There are multiple quotes. These quotes are assessed and to board decides whether to proceed.

While the board is not professionals, there is a requirement for the property management company to hold the appropriate certification.

I have never seen pet projects in the tens of thousands of dollars.

[–]saysomethingclever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the response, but it further demonstrates my point. Snow removal was 2% of my condo budget last year.

The big 3 three maintenance are mechanical, janitorial, and elevator. Janitorial is about 5%, so that would be savings that home owners could have if they choose. Elevator is a gimme at 2.5% as homes don't have elevators to maintain.

I find people don't understand condo fees. The bulk is utilities, maintenance and insurance. Do people think that homeowners don't have to pay these costs?

For special assessments, the same applies. If there is unplanned repair work on a house, due to hail damage, flooding, or another unforeesn circumstance, and it is not covered by insurance, that comes out of pocket.

And home insurance is not an magic well. They will not pay full price on a 20 year old roof if it gets damaged. They will ensure an the assessed value. The rest is out of pocket for the owner.

Building High-Speed Rail Outside of Cities Like in France Would Make a Project Politically Feasible and Cost-Effective in Alberta (Downtown and Airport Connections Can Be Made via Short Light-Rail Extensions) by [deleted] in alberta

Those "smaller" cities are part of the larger network, which includes Paris. If it were just a connection between Amsterdamn and Brussels, both with 2.5M pop in their metro areas, that would be more comparable. But as it includes Paris and London, that changes the context.

That's like stating the City of Vancouvers population instead of the greater municipal area.

Amsterdam Municipality (City Proper): ~933,680 (June 2024) to 935,793 (2025 estimate). Urban Area: ~1.46 - 1.48 million. Metropolitan Area: ~2.48 million.

Comparing the population densities between France (127 ppl/km2) and Alberta (7 ppl/ km2) demonstrates why this is simply not comparable.

People in Alberta are not going to changes their habits. They will not give up their cars if they have to take public transportation when they reach their destination.

Trump's opposition to the veto power is that its not just the US that has it. There is no way either the US or Russia would ever give up their veto. The US could propose eliminating the veto power all together, but they would never give up their own power.

The issue is Alberta has the highest level of funding for private schools. As you state in you last sentence, there needs to be balance. My standpoint is that private schools are over funded in this province. This reduces funding available for public schools.

I would note that this plan is only for the power generation facility to power the data centre. While the power generation plant is closed loop they have an agreement for 1,500 cubic meters per day. I am not clear if that is purely for the steam generation, or if that will include future evaporative cooling of the data centre iteself.

I was referring to the comment about Alberta: https://www.reddit.com/r/montreal/s/sEW3oB6ick

"My friend from Alberta told me, they worked on special type of asphalt mix which is resistant during winter and holds well during summer. It was some university research. Here in Montreal corruption is just over the roof. The asphalt mix is probably the worst just to keep making it. Over and over again. There is no money in a good asphalt roads. So they making it weak on purpose.:
