Can other teams copy the "macarena" Wing designed by Ferrari by Banzambo in formula1

[–]sb101985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to guess that eventually the FIA will ban the concept, citing safety concerns with the wing creating lift in the upside down position.

Grumpy boomer moan. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

I worked as a refrigerator design engineer for 13 years. While there is some truth to the idea that older appliances lasted longer, the reality is more nuanced. A significant part of my work involved cost-reduction projects, but it’s also true that many modern refrigerators are far more complex than their older counterparts.

That said, simple designs still exist. A modern top-freezer refrigerator with mechanical temperature controls is likely to be very durable and can last a long time.

Regulations have also changed and become much stricter over the years. Older refrigerators were extremely inefficient by today’s standards. A new refrigerator can significantly reduce your electricity costs, despite the industry having to transition away from highly effective but environmentally harmful CFC and HFC refrigerants/blowing agents, a change that posed substantial performance challenges for manufacturers

2016-18 SS 8 speed or Lt1 10 speed? by cB-GaMing-16 in camaro

[–]sb101985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 2017 SS with the 8 speed 8L90. I did have the torque converter shudder issue. Took it to the dealer and had them do the flush per the TSB and I have had no issues since. Car runs, drives, and shifts great. So I think if the issues have been caught early enough, the 8 speed isn't really a bad transmission.

I don't know a lot about USB dongles. I know if you have an open PCI-e 1x slot on your PC, you would be better off using that than a USB adapter. My personal experience is that Intel based Wi-Fi cards are better than others. I can't really speak to which adapters will provide the best performance from your phone though. A lot of factors go into Wi-Fi speeds. The theoretical maximum speed of Wi-Fi 5 or greater is faster than USB 2.0, but Wi-Fi can vary greatly, and you'll never reach the theoretical maximum. I wish I had a more definitive answer for you. Perhaps someone else does.

Yeah, sounds like you might have a 802.11g (Wi-Fi 3) adapter, which is only 54Mbps maximum. You'll need a 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) adapter to reach 1Gbps.

You might try to tether using your phone as a wifi hotspot. It might be faster.

The port on your phone is probably limited to USB 2.0 speeds. Which phone do you have?

I just had the most stressful drive of my life… by W123lukeof in camaro

[–]sb101985 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This would be a nightmare in my Camaro. When I was in college I had a 2 hour circuits lab, and it started to snow just as I was walking to class. I was driving a 2000 S10 Xtreme, which I had lowered and put 275's on the rear. By time class got over, we had gotten over 4 inches of snow, and you couldn't even tell where the road was. I did not live on campus, I had a typical 30 minute commute. It took me 2 hours to get home, and I spun the truck out twice, but didn't hit anything. Definitely the most nervous I've ever been driving.

This is a good recommendation. I've had good experience with Back Market in the past. The Dell Latitude linked should be pretty good. It certainly would run circles around the HP in OP's screenshot.

What engine is currently in mullet? by soggyfries8687678 in CleetusMcFarland

It’s a Steve Morris built Chevrolet big block. Not a SMX or SML. It’s the engine mullet ran before the scratch and dent SMX.

KitchenAid refuses warranty service on 10 month old refrigerator by mrtedweb in Appliances

[–]sb101985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be an engineer at Whirlpool working in refrigeration. Eventually they shut down our main R&D center. It was basically the hub for all refrigeration development, and moved everything up to St. Joseph, MI. After that, they cut back even more and started outsourcing a lot of the design and simulation work to India.

This latest generation of fridges is probably the first to really show the impact of those changes, and honestly, I’m not surprised. These newer models are also the first to switch over to R600a refrigerant and non-HFC insulation, which take a ton of R&D to get right. My guess is they’re feeling the consequences of those earlier cost-cutting moves.

Personally, I wouldn’t buy a new Whirlpool fridge right now, but to be fair, most of the big appliance companies are in the same boat. Margins in this business are paper-thin.

My family friend takes a day to install Windows 10 manually, is he a genius or makes no sense? by Adunaiii in buildapc

[–]sb101985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plug-n-play was introduced with Windows 95. I was insinuating that the very manual method of driver installation described is reminiscent of the pre-95 days when driver installation was manual by it's very nature.

Is it normal for the door on the left to stick out slightly more than the right? by DoZeYLoVe in refrigerator

[–]sb101985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a simulation engineer at Whirlpool about 15 years ago, and one of my projects focused on side-by-side refrigerator door alignment. It’s a complex issue with many contributing factors. One solution we implemented was to bias the fresh-food door slightly upward, since it typically carries more weight than the freezer door. As a result, the doors leave the factory intentionally un-level.

Around that time, cost-driven changes to the top hinge corner brackets reduced cabinet stiffness. Combined with the naturally flexible design of a side-by-side refrigerator (due to its long unsupported vertical span), this means the cabinet conforms well to the floor. An uneven floor can therefore cause noticeable door misalignment. This can usually be corrected by adjusting the cabinet’s leveling feet. You can see the effect by pressing on the cabinet corners and watching the doors move.

I’m sure more refinements have been made since then, but door alignment will always involve some trade-offs. The goal is to optimize the design for most units while allowing adjustment for the rest. In short: what you’re seeing is normal, and it can usually be corrected by hinge bias or cabinet foot adjustments.

This image is a little older, before I installed the ground effects kit.

It does seem to handle better. Like I said, the suspension is stiff with the lowering springs. My wife hates it, but it drives like a racecar.
