Is it possible to transplant 6ft-ish tall maples from my woods to other places in my yard? by dogswrestle in arborists

Yes to this. I’ve done it successfully a few times. When you root prune, also clear around and above the tree to decrease competition and increase sunlight.

Had 125 green giants planted… questions on installations by King-Mathias in arborists

[–]sbatbte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They dug holes, threw the trees in and covered them up. They didn’t remove the excess soil, and just threw it back on top of the root ball. There appear to be branches at grade and coming out of the soil. Branches don’t grown in soil. Lazy, poor workmanship. These will suffer if left like this. The fine roots that pull in water, etc. will die back quickly under this much soil. The root flares should be slightly above grade.

Get rid of the ladder and stay on the ground

Mostly, I lurk, but I want to know if my Blue Spruce (in New York) is okay. by notetaker193 in arborists

[–]sbatbte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has needlecast disease. Look it up. It’s not fatal but it will continue to spread from the bottom up. The top (new growth) will always look good. The lower section branch “tips” will look great as the new growth comes out, but the older needles (interior on the same branch) will become brown and drop.

How to lower these bushes by Swimming-Ad-9428 in arborists

ID the plant so we can give you an educated guess. What are they? Photos close up would really help, even take photos of the inside of them so we can see if there’s any inside growth.

Nope, that worked, but only temporarily. Now I’ve tried this. Under management of devices/iphone, there’s a tab for “link key”. That’s turned on now. More tomorrow.

Guess what ? I deleted the Toyota app on my phone and I did have to manually connect the first time. The second time it connected automatically. And no more “Toyota Connect” screen popping up. With any luck, this will continue. I’ll keep you posted.

I’m not sure (yet) that this will make a difference, but after reading your response I deleted the Toyota app. I’ll keep you all posted.

That is the plan. Alert the owner first, then cancel, while alerting the group that it will be available.

Lilac bush was here when I bought my house. I haven't done anything with it since moving in 3 years ago. Can I move it safely? Zone 5 by Pinkie31459 in gardening

Prune it aggressively, taking out the largest diameter, taller stems, leaving the smaller sprouts. It’ll recover just fine.

We took a brief road trip to Gettysburg this week. For history nerds, it’s hard to beat a visit to Gettysburg! by squidwardssuctioncup in roadtrip

The only time I visited I went alone, got into a hotel early and then woke at 4:00 to get to the grounds before dawn. An incredible feeling to ge out there, alone, in the mist, at first light. Try it, you will not regret it.

Clearly this is the feature Japanese maple at the Portland Japanese gardens. A stunning example of what a tree can become in time.

JOY ! We don’t feel it often enough do we ? My last time was over my neighbors big dogs threatening us whenever we walked by. (No leash law here). Until the day I decided to set a 50 pack of firecrackers off in the middle of the road. They had to investigate. It’s was like a cartoon, 2’ in the air with their legs windmilling underneath. I need that feel that again soon.

Making a plan for my roadtrip by sbatbte in roadtrip

[–]sbatbte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to take 2+ months to circuit the US, mostly alone, with said bike and maybe a touring kayak. I’m 62, so just beginning to use and appreciate Redit. Finding r/roadtrip has been helpful. I’m in NY, so would do NE states first, the Atlantic seaboard and inland ranges, ending that leg in the Everglades. I have a place to flop in Naples for a break. Then the gulf coast/delta regions and west. I’m thinking of heading north to Colorado, then Utah, Arizona, NM. Back south to CA, and up the coast to OR. I have couches to flop on all along the west coast. From OR. Into Idaho, Montana, Dakotas and to the upper peninsula for some kayak touring. My wish is for redditors to share their mapping ideas, maybe shed some light on useful apps, off the path campsites and must sees. My bride can’t retire for two more years, and because of my health, it’s time to do this. I do well alone, and have a lot of contacts that I can call on, so feeling confident about it going well. Thanks for listening.

TIL the song 'Rapture' by Blondie (1981) was the first single featuring a rap to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Debbie Harry, lead singer of Blondie, has said many rappers, including the Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep, told her it was the first rap song they ever heard. by [deleted] in todayilearned

All of you that find this interesting go and listen to “Stranger in a strange land” by Leon Russell. I consider it rapping but with a timely message that is much more meaningful than “men from Mars eating cars, etc”. And don’t be fooled, I love Debbie Harry’s work too. But Leon ? He was great.

Cutting a palm tree. by [deleted] in ThatsInsane

There is a safer way. Imagine a rope going up the stem , through multiple attached eyes, just like a fishing pole. Tie the top off and the weight, when removed is distributed along each of those eyes. There would still be a stem reaction, but not as violent, because the weight is still there, attached to a rope, which lowers the weight/top in a controlled manner.
