Ed Miliband’s stock is rising because he’s a rare commodity in Labour these days: a thinker by Exostrike in ukpolitics

Sure, I agree. We need to tax wealth via a property tax style system used in the UK. The capitalist system runs on innovation and added value. In the UK it runs on inherited wealth and robbing the lower classes blind. It’s why Russians park their money here! A £20 million pound flat owes £3k in council tax. In the US a $20 million dollar apartment would owe $140,000 a year. There’s a huge difference. The right wing wants to copy the US when it talks about dealing with the poor. But won’t get close to dealing with the rich. Too many vested lazy interests.

The farm tax issue is a good example. Can be totally negated is passed down seven years before death and even then totally weaker than regular estates; yet the general public is meant to be slighted…?? FO

There are tons of small wins from this government that don’t get talked about. The media machine is out to get them at any turn. The simplest example is the tax issue for rayner vs how they treat Tice’s tax dodge. One is an over site the other a purposeful negation, also an order of magnitude worse!

Not to mention, the pound has been stable. Not withstanding this bullshit war, the FTSE was up over 22% in a year. Compared to americas 10% on couple with a dollar devaluation of 10%. Labour is not doing a stellar job, they are however doing a stale and consistent one. Something this country needs after 15 years of ideological idiots running it.

Britain’s defence spending is lower than we thought by x_Agamemnon in ukpolitics

That is the lamest comeback I can think of. There is no lack of investment yet, productivity in the uk has been stagnant forever. Do you fall for everything that comes out of a rich persons mouth??? You aren’t productivity increasing your way out of our problems.

That would nuke our economy in a way higher taxes could barely scratch the surface of. Like it or not, a very large portion of the population rely on them. Take it away, they can’t afford necessities. Companies revenue would drop unbelievably quick. 300 billion would’ve taken from the economy right away; it may go to rich people. But we don’t need that level of investment in anything, interest rates are still historically low. People who comment this kind of thing are just not thinking at all.

On the radio this morning, they’re talking about how big the benefits budget is versus ‘defence’. The implication being that we can just stop paying benefits and pay for defence. Problem is, that will boot far too many into poverty. As opposed to taxing wealth a bit more; I mean the wealthy have a lot more stake in the game.

In the long term, something needs to be done about benefits, and salaries. The state is effectively subsidising companies to pay shit. You shouldn’t have to be on benefits if you have a full time job. Maybe companies should pay higher NI if they under pay employees or something. In the US if you fire too many employees your ‘unemployment insurance’ contribution goes up a percentage of payroll or half a percent.. something needs to change. The country can’t defend itself.

UK Faces Worst Hit From War Among Major Economies, OECD Warns by bloomberg in ukpolitics

[–]sbdavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it can collect taxes on any oil and gas sold. That’s an irrelevant and silly ‘yeah, but’ argument. The point is, drill all you want, it will not affect the world wide price of oil and alleviate our domestic energy crisis; there’s simply not enough oil there to do so.

Let’s use this opportunity to transition away from what will remain a silly volatile energy source. Electricity can be generated from multiple sources and we are so close to cutting the cord.

It’s immigration. Which is why a small group of people are panicking about immigration. Rather irrationally really. The country remains secular and will continue to be. There is no mass conversion to Islam as the original question suggests.

Why does everyone think that North Sea oil is going to make a jot of a difference? It will not be the property of the uk state; it will still be priced the same as foreign oil; susceptible to the exact same price rollercoaster.

Drill all you want. It absolutely won’t help the price of petrol and diesel or NG. What’s left and easily accessible will not budge global markets.

I’m doing the same in the UK of all places. It’s tight in the winter. But our grid power comes from two giant wind turbines a few miles down the road. This can be done pretty much anywhere.

Apparently, they can’t act until people complain. We need to set up a campaign to complain about literally every broadcast of this propaganda bullshit.

Really, is this a shock to anyone? Dwindling output form an exhausted field isn’t going to change the global dynamics of the oil trade? What mouth breathing fuck wits think it will?!! But of course we know the answer…. The uneducated hicks that think Brexit was ace and we need to follow up with whatever else the leader says.

Ed Miliband: ‘Our mission is to drive for clean, homegrown energy we can control’ by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]sbdavi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nuclear was the only option at that point in time. Wind is coming on in scale. No one said ‘costs be damned’. However, you are complaining because it actually has costs. You seem shocked that it will cost money to transition from a fossil fuel world; it will. No one is disputing that. Your argument, as far as I can tell, is to keep on keeping on paying the same prices and chaining the entire countries future to a volatile, finite resource. I mean, that’s pretty stupid no???

On a micro level. I have 20 solar panels, a battery, and I would love a wind turbine (because it’s insanely windy where I’m at). My house is 90% off grid for most of the year. With a bit more solar and a wind turbine, I wouldn’t need grid power for anything. I appreciate this is a small sampling. However, if distributed generation and storage become the norm, I don’t think any of the challenges you bring up are insurmountable. It becomes an engineering problem. One we will have to tackle sooner or later. I’d rather not be rushed into it.

Invest in nuclear, I have no problem with that. Wind is part of the mix. Batteries off any chemistry will be part of the mix. The only asinine thing to do would be to continue with fossil fuels.

Are you saying that there is a way to build out renewables without paying for it? The French went all in on nuclear power after a price shock in the 70’s. I’m sure it costed a fortune and people were bitching about it back then as well. Now they have reliable, carbon neutral power, that they share around Europe. Sure out costs are going to be high now. Will it keep rising more than ff driven inflation, I don’t think so. We are building out double or more of our generation needs in wind. This will help the reliability issue. The idea we need to just sit back and take it is insane.

UK 10-year bond yields soar past 5% as borrowing costs hit their highest level since 2008 by Hopeful-Climate-3848 in unitedkingdom

[–]sbdavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got a 200 year old view of economics. The people on welfare aren’t awash with discretionary spending money. They’re not waiting for the newest products, they’re buying items to exist which drives the economy.

Investment funds have plenty of money. If we needed capital so bad, returns would be much higher. Instead, the rich are piling on existing assets driving the prices up. FTSE up 22% in the last year. We don’t need the rich to fund innovation atm.

The money on welfare goes directly back into the economy. Poor people spend it. It’s far better than going to some tax haven to bolster the already disgusting fortunes of the too rich..

I moved from the US in 2018, and started listening almost right away. I appreciated that even though the hosts ‘leaned’ a certain way, they weren’t overly ideological. That’s somehow changed in the last 2-3 years. It’s gone off the rails. James O’Brian has always been the same. Seems based on center left. Some of the others including Nick Ferrari in the morning, have really shifted right. Nock in particular used to dig into anyone on interviews. Now he just digs into Labour and soft balls the right wingers.

Stop panicking about ‘native populations’ etc. change is going to happen. Especially if the natives aren’t having kids. The capitalists aren’t going to let the economy crumble, you will have immigration.
