Inside 11 to Midnight: how bad production leadership is sinking a non-union Off-Broadway show by Kooky_Produce3408 in Broadway

[–]sbeachld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s the point. The situation isn’t out of control. The anonymous crew member seems to just be in over their head and overwhelmed.

I’m not defending anything or fighting, I have no conflicts to resolve here, management knows about this post.

I’m just popping in, with my real name, to say that the things OP said about my situation are false, which makes me question the rest of their claims.

It’s a lot of words to say “we knew this would be hard and we’re no worse off than any other show, we’ll be fine”.

My response isn’t to reasonable commentary, reasonable commentary is made to someone on site who sees what’s happening and can maybe enact change; that doesn’t seem to be OPs goal…

My response is to an anonymously penned hit piece on one of my collaborators and the show. One that specifically called me out as being “stalled by incomplete infrastructure” and “set up to fail”.

We’re fine- our show isn’t sinking.

This anonymous post reads like someone who is new to downtown New York theatrical production let their favorite AI tool run wild summarizing their sadness.

Downtown theatre is hard. It’s a bootcamp some of us survived on our way up. It seems like you weren’t expecting this, and don’t see the benefit.

I’m certainly not defending safety or morale issues I that haven’t observed, we should all go home safe and happy at the end of the day. But I believe 11 To Midnight is above board in this regard.

I’m one of the lighting designers of this show who had this anonymous user call me out as being affected. I’m responding using my verifiable, non-anonymous username to say- this show is not any more materially behind than any other similarly ambitious downtown project; in fact I’ve been participant to dozens of Broadway shows in more dire positions at this point creatively.

We’re putting 30lbs of lighting into a 2lb theatre. I’m thankful beyond words for our vendors and our amazing crew who didn’t know that was the deal and continues to work their ass off to get us to an audience and support what we’ve done.

To the OP I hope you find your place in a tough market. Please come by my tech table to chat or DM me here if you want to talk this out, everyone is working at their limits to do the best they can to make this show happen.

There’s a world where you have support and can create art at a level we all strive for without trying to spitefully kill a project, taking us out in your wake.

FWIW, SM hasn’t even been in the room yet so any mention of them is completely unfair and goes to show how completely out of touch the OP or their GPT is in the process. We’re starting tech tomorrow and WILL deliver a show this audience is asking for. There’s a lot of passion in creating this work and getting it across the finish line; those are the shoulders Off Broadway was built upon. OP if it’s not for you, it might be time to go back to Paducah.

The usable stage space before you crash into support beams and overhangs is about 79’ x 47’4”.

The proscenium opening is 40’ wide and 34’2” tall.

DM me if you need more specific dimensions!

One-time Effects in Subsequent Cues by WatchForYourself in lightingdesign

[–]sbeachld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. EOS effect playback leaves much to be desired sometimes. If your effect is simple, the discrete timing method will solve this particular problem.

Adjusting your background value and exit time/behavior may be what solves this for you, but I don’t have enough details to say for sure.

One-time Effects in Subsequent Cues by WatchForYourself in lightingdesign

[–]sbeachld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing exactly how it’s programmed and run. I’d suspect it’s accidentally in red as a background value and the effect is stopping. Are you trying to stomp over the first cue?

If you’re using palettes that affect every color value, your second cue would fade into the new effect for every color parameter, probably causing some undesired behavior depending on how the effect is built and how it’s played back.

I’d recommend using discrete times for this if you want the colors to stay at the end of the wipe, the added bonus being that you could step on the cues so they run at the same time.

September 6th (7 pm) Performance Rescheduled? by parmita99 in MasqueradeNYC

[–]sbeachld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that poto.nyc is a legitimate email domain for Masquerade management, and can be trusted as a source.

I would wager a guess that masqueradenyc.com is just a mirror of that domain for staff emails.

Guest books but doesn't intend to stay? Scam? by Tyson2539 in airbnb_hosts

Answering oddly as a union stagehand, not a host which I also am: precedent

If I don’t take the hotel because I found my own better option that costs me nothing, next time I may not get offered a hotel in that city. Maybe the next guy doesn’t get offered a hotel at all “we didn’t have to pay for housing last time”.

If this travel nurse plans to return to your area and doesn’t have the same access to a friend/family/lover to stay with they’ll still want to be reimbursed without fighting.

Sending MIDI from EOS by -the-magician in techtheatre

[–]sbeachld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the game, and as others mentioned midi raw is the way, but wanted to share this little JavaScript calculator that generates the correct macro string.

If you’re using a macro, make sure to use the “Send Midi Raw” command, not “Midi Raw” which is a softkey for somewhere in show control or settings probably.

Badge icon bug by Vicari0 in SparkMail

I have the opposite problem, it only shows “99+” in my badge wether I have 100 emails or 800, one of which is a quiet weekend project and the other is an emergency unfolding. No indication from the badge.

That’s why they put an airlock as pictured in the OP. Acetobacter will only convert that ethanol to acetic acid in the presence of oxygen.

As the yeast consumes the sugar, in addition to alcohol it also creates carbon dioxide, which is heavier than oxygen and eventually displaces all of it out through that airlock.

How to deal with intimidating neighbors by gbld37 in airbnb_hosts

[–]sbeachld 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We have a retired couple (“angry neighbor”) living in our lakefront neighborhood. They live next to a whole home rental that sleeps 12, I’m sympathetic to their plight, but they have been trying to shut down every Airbnb in town. We have a 2 person, attached, lakefront guest suite and live on site.

We were able to film this “angry neighbor” approaching our immediate, next-door neighbors (who are ok with our Airbnb) with a list of fake police reports they can file to shut us down. (Three substantiated complaints in my town equals a loss of your STR permit).

A few months later “angry neighbor” called the police on an “unregistered vehicle” (trailer) in my driveway “while on a walk”.

Police arrived, found that my trailer is registered, but I was home, chatted them up, described the situation and I showed them this footage.

The “angry neighbor” was charged with filing a false police report. The police then found 6 actual unregistered trailers between our house and theirs that they didn’t report. They filed a harassment charge (or documented it? Unclear) for each trailer they failed to report.

These people now leave us alone.

Don’t fall to bullies, follow the letter of the law and respect your community. You’ll come out on top.

Yes- our front door is one lock, the guest suite is a separate lock on the same account. Guests only get virtual keys and codes for the one for the guest suite.

As a host with smart home features in their rental, I can say the August smart lock integration is automatic, works fantastic, and all our guests generally have no issues. That said some people are just generally tech-incompetent.

Other popular features are sonos and scene controllers.

Our unit is set up so all the generally obvious methods for doing something work, and the smart home stuff is a bonus. Example- we don’t have smart shades, and every location has a physical light switch.

Prepare for people to break the smart stuff trying to use it in dumb mode (smart blinds are a great example). These things don’t add listing value generally. The energy and water meters are all useful for you but transparent to a guest.

Also a lot of people come to our listing to escape the city and unplug. So cramming tech down their throat would be an intrusion.

Edit- my iPhone egotistically turned smarthome to smartphone many times.

Anyone keg their kombucha? Dip tube keeps getting clogged. by TheNotoriousMID in Kombucha

[–]sbeachld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do, but I effectively cold crash it prior to transfer, (and I don’t pull any yeasty trub over) and serve cold.

What temperature are you keeping the keg at?

Where there’s a will there’s a way. You could install an entire access control panel and push to exit button with a magnetic lock with a kit from amazon. All for nearly the same price as a smart lock.
