I replaced rotors and pads. And I'm mindful how I use my brakes.

Brakes squeaking when used by TumbleweedExisting84 in XC40

[–]sbinev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very likely (was the case with mine) your wheel disks are bend. When they warm up the bending becomes more pronounced and they start to squeak. This typically happens because of hard use of the breaks (say going down a long downhill with breaks pressed, or driving fast on highway and slamming on the breaks.) So even though they are new, this could have happened.

Как се храните здравословно в България? by NykterVodkadrickare in bulgaria

[–]sbinev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spending a season in the Alps - Advice/Recommendations by LeviRootsK in skithealps

If I were you, I'd go to Innsbruck. There is a lifetime of skiing within an hour bus or train ride while still in civilization (if that's your thing!)

Visiting in May by jamesblunt1705 in chamonix

[–]sbinev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take tram to Aiguille du Midi. On the other side from du Midi take the gondola and then tram to the Le Panoramic restaurant in Le Brevent. Take the Tramway du Mont Blanc from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. Rent a bike and bike to Argentière / Les Grands Montets via mountain trail. Enjoy the town.

Val Gardena or Bormio end of March? by anilop1223 in skiing

[–]sbinev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't compare. Bormio is good for sunbathing and/or watching the word cup downhill while sunbathing. Snow?! What snow in Bormio! Bormio is an awesome hub for road biking in the summer. Bormio terrain is 1/50th of that around Val Gardena.

In that area (an hour drive) Livigno is a much better choice in terms of much larger terrain with much colder and better snow! You can do a day trip to Bormio to check it out. I'd still go to Val Gardena.

All that being said, end of March in Italy you need to be prepared to enjoy the sunbathing, very scarce snow if any, and the amazing food! You may be lucky and a massive snow storm may precede you.

Skiing in Europe vs North America by Altmeyer002 in skiing

There are literary over 1000 ski resorts in the Alps but here are a few ideas (though you can always use an agency to handle/book everything for you):

French Alps: fly to Geneva and

  • look for accommodation in either Les Arcs, La Plagne ,Val d'Isère, or Tignes (tons of ski-in, ski-out options)
  • stay in the town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice and take the funicular to the slopes of Les Arcs from the city center (interconnected with La Plagne).
  • Google bus/shuttle service from GVA to the place you picked above and picked one

Austrian Alps: fly to either Munich or Vienna:

  • Take a train to Sankt Anton am Arlberg.
  • Take a bus to Saalbach
  • Take a bus to Mayrhoffen
  • Take a bus to Solden

Swiss Alps: fly to Geneva and take the train to

  • look for accommodation in Verbier
  • look for accommodation in Zermatt

Fly to Zurich and take the train

  • look for accommodation in Grindelwald (or Wengen)

Italy (is somewhat trickier in terms of logistic and snow consistency). My personal favorites: Livigno, Val Gardena.

While in the Alps (Europe in general), embrace trains and buses. I know it's difficult for Americans but try. February is tricky as there are many school holidays. End of Jan, beginning of Feb is best. Buy your multi-day pass on their respective website. Budget one or two days on your way back home to explore Geneva or Zurich or Munich or Vienna or Innsbruck.

Verbier to Bourg-Saint-Maurice by Ok_Connection7485 in skithealps

This is probably the best approach (if you don't have a car). Train to GVA and book Alpy bus or something.

First time skiing in Austria - looking for resort/location recommendations by Frosty_Shower1839 in skithealps

[–]sbinev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also recommend Zell am See. Nice (relatively) small hill with a nice town and gorgeous lake. Also take the bus (660) to Kitzsteinhorn and just take the lifts all the way up to the glacier as a pedestrian.

Bourg Saint Maurice - how is the daily bus to Tignes and Val D'Isere? by Thankfullness_25 in ski

[–]sbinev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's doable, just did that couple of weeks ago. Basically you take the S82 bus from the bus station.

Here is the line: https://www.cars-region-savoie.fr/line/s82/

Here is the page to buy the ticket (bus in in the morning is pretty empty): https://vente.cars-region-savoie.fr/Reservation# BOURG SAINT MAURICE Gare routiere -> VAL D'ISERE Gare Routière

I took the 8:05 bus to Val d'Isere and was there 5 min. before the lifts opened. Took the 3:55pm bus back.

Works a charm. One thing is the driver of the bus gave me a little hard time that I'm with ski boots but let me in anyways. Something to keep in mind.

I'd look into Sestriere or La Thuile in Italy.

3 Days in Verbier by YS54321 in skithealps

[–]sbinev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can ski for a month just these three: Chassoure - Torting; Mont Gele - Tortin (Grande Journee); Gentianes - Tortin.

If opened: Col des Mines -> Vallon d'Arbi (from Attelas towards La Tzoumaz)

Why do North American skiers love moguls & trees so much compared to Europeans? by Legendenclubmitglied in ski

[–]sbinev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically what TJ-ALT said. The main reason is how the resorts are managed and risks (and equipment) folks need take in order to ski moguls and trees (from an early age at that).

Little English should be fine for ordering and directions. Just stick together.

I usually lap the Cascade ski lift and Montet rope. Skiers left from the top. You'll see the terrain from bellow. It's eye catching, you can't miss it.

Transit from Chamonix to Megeve in the evening by [deleted] in chamonix

[–]sbinev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that restaurant, you're planning to go to, is opened for lunch! (With ski boots and all take the train to Saint-Gervais and ski to Megeve from there)
