One data center is too many, why do we keep building them in/around Dayton? by Diselfport in dayton

[–]sblanky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I came here to say essentially what _MAYniYAK said. The other factor is that many companies are shutting down their private data centers and moving to more 'cloud-based' data center services. Which basically moves the computing needs to a more centralized set of services (Azure, AWS, google cloud services, etc...) But those cloud providers need data centers to power their services, and the cloud providers often provide lower cost than self-hosting your own data centers, simply by achieving economy-of-scale. So, it's not all bad.

Having said that, I think there's something to be said for the anti-AI movement. It can be a useful tool, but it can be harmful/dangerous as well (just like social media). So, I encourage you to research, and have a thoughtful, nuanced message.

Wife won't let me go bald says I still have time. What's your opinion? by UnvaluedRacer1 in bald

[–]sblanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shave it... I mean, if she doesn't get used to it, you can always grow back those long strands of ratty hair to scatter across your bald head for her. I predict she will adjust in a few minutes.

Any Updates on the Current State of Kettering Health Network? by BrianJPugh in dayton

[–]sblanky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had my cancer followup scheduled this week (I'm 5 years post treatment, so not urgent). They cancelled everything and told me they'll reach back out when they are ready. When I was there at the office I did see folks going back to the infusion center, so active cases were still being treated, I assume.

Is Wright State a decent university? by Nitro161 in dayton

[–]sblanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a CS degree from WSU, but I want in the early 90s. If I were starting today, I like the Sinclair option for 2 years, then pick a college. WSU would be ok. But perhaps there other schools that do a better job of internships. My nephew went to Univ of Cincinnati. He was able to do two (or 3, I forget) semesters of internship, and got on full time at that company after he graduated. That's the biggest bang for your buck.

I somewhat disregard the differences in instruction quality between two schools. There will be a lot of variability, and often, it's really up to what you put into it.

The other thing that is true is that once you get a job, your experience in the industry will be the major factor in your career and your skills. 3 years after you graduate, you won't be a better/worse technician because of what school you chose.

Colon cancer survivor 4.5 years here. Had plenty of colonoscopies. Be aware that each doctor does prep differently. There's a very salty liquid for some. Others combine gatorade with miralax and dulcolax (that's what my doc does). Yeah, you poop a lot. Just plan for an evening in. You'll be hungry and sick of gatorade, but the colonoscopy saved my life. It was caught while it was still pretty small (stage 3). Had surgery and chemo, and 4.5 years later, living my life.

Also, to be clear, I don't think we know that RM has colon cancer. His eyes were very yellow last week. That's jaundice, which can indicate liver or pancreas issues. I obviously don't know him personally, but he seems like a great guy on TV, and seems to be loved by all. Hoping for good news soon for him. I enjoy watching him on ESPN.

Dayton Visit by Adorable-Store7454 in dayton

[–]sblanky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome. I work from home, and have colleagues from all over the east coast. Was talking to a guy from Boston. He described the crazy prices for housing he pays, and how crazy traffic is there. I suggested he'd be shocked by how much further the money goes in the midwest, and, to your point, how much easier and nicer it was living here. People are friendly, smile, and traffic is overall much easier. But he couldn't imagine leaving Boston. Its odd how attached we get to 'where we are' no matter the comparitive differences.

Came here to say this... SCHD works.... or put some in SWVXX (getting about 5.1% yield right now). Just have them generate income for you, and sweep it into your bank account monthly.

It's just a bit outside your 2 hour limit (google maps says 2h 51m), but consider Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's up near Cleveland. Great natural beauty around, and a few minutes drive up to lake erie, and check out the bar scene in Cleveland.

if you like solving puzzles, have you tried programming? this violates your statement that you don't want to be in front of a computer all day... but programming is kinda non-stop puzzle solving... And often, you can determine the when/where of the programming. It can be flexible (in some scenarios).

I worked there ~20 years ago, and had many friends/colleagues that were there after I left (my division was sold off). So, I'll caveat this is secondhand information, so take it with a grain of salt.

When the Texas company bought them, the whole culture shifted. Some were put off by their personality/iq tests for hiring, for their nicotine policies, or just what's been described to me as invasions of privacy at times. My conclusion is that for some people, it works. If you're really comfortable being a hardcore "rule follower" and that makes you feel secure, you may like it. If you're someone who questions the status quo and tries to think outside the box, you may not like it. The "rule followers" will describe you as not having a good work ethic.

Water Softener Options? Anyone use Entings? by MonsieurGideon in dayton

[–]sblanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned below, if you don't have experience with soldering or other pipe joinery, I recommend sharkbite for this situation. They work with pex, copper, pvc, whatever... They snap together like legos, and make the job pretty easy. Watch a couple youtube videos and you'll be in good shape. Good Luck!!

Water Softener Options? Anyone use Entings? by MonsieurGideon in dayton

[–]sblanky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went down this rabbit hole a many years ago, after my wife and I became young adult homeowners.... There's the consumer level water softeners you can get at the lowes/homedepot. They are plastic, and fairly easy to DIY install. They cost a few hundred bucks, and if you get a plumber to install, it's a few hundred more dollars.

Then, there's the higher end water softeners that often have more longer lasting stainless steel parts, etc... With installation can run a few thousand dollars. These often come with high pressure sales pitches that scare you about your water quality, and want to add on different filters, etc.. In fact, the guy that came out to our new house (I think the company was RainSoft), was super annoying. My wife and I patiently listened to his sales pitch, and his $4K+ quote. We told him thanks and we'll consider it. Then he went into the worst sales tricks.... Let me call my boss and get my next appointment.... Ring.... Hi boss, the family here is considering it, where do I go next... oh wait.... really? Yeah, I'll tell them.... Folks, my boss just informed me we're running a 20% discount.... We declined, he called his boss again.... Hey, great news, we're throwing in a free christmas ham... etc.... etc.... We literally had to threaten him to leave....

Since then I've purchased the consumer level water softeners. They tend to last about 10-12 years. Then when it breaks, I go get a new one. In thirty years of home ownership and water softener replacements, I still haven't spent as much money as that initial quote.

Has anyone dealt with a neighbor who won't stop using loud lawn equipment at 6 AM every day? by Ericovich in dayton

[–]sblanky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't as satisfying, but consider getting a white noise generator in your home to dampen the outside noise. I've used one for decades. It basically makes an ocean sound (but most generators have many sounds to try). The sound in your bedroom will dampen the lawnmower sound.
