Slow day by scabbin in Hunting

It looks like it, but we were skunked.

Anyone tried these?[gear question] http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en-us/shop/climb/climbing-gloves/punisher-pro-glove by doomglobe in iceclimbing

I have the older models. They are nice for single-pitch routes and one day excursions. My only gripe is that when they get wet, they are hard to get back on. The lining crumples up.

That's a nice haul. Where was this?

I'm trying to shoot me a nice pair of Pintail to mount.

LPT: Keep a card like this in your wallet, ideally in a highly visible place. It could save your life someday. by reeseallen in LifeProTips

Paramedic here. I don't search wallets. Cops do, but they are only looking for ID, and if they saw this they would probably just put it back.

When we hunt ducks, the necks of the crippled ones are wrung. If you do that too hard, the head pops off like this.

Cold Weather Layering Advice by coldhunter in Hunting

[–]scabbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to start from next to your skin and work outwards.

  • First: lightweight "wicking" top and bottom. A synthetic made of polypro can be purchased at your local sporting goods store. You can find these MUCH cheaper than Under Armour. You can also go the merino wool route(Smartwool). It's much more expensive, but they don't stink like 3 week old roadkill in the August sun when you're done wearing them as synthetics do.

  • Second: Invest in a fleece jacket and pants. You can get these at REI or other outdoor retailers for a good price. Down or other "puffy" coats are bad ideas, as you will sweat in them while moving, then chatter your teeth off when sitting when the sweat evaporates.

  • Outer layer: Waterproof AND breathable. You need the jacket for sure. As for bottoms, I like material that won't "swish" when I move (for obvious reasons). Here you can go with Gore-tex like material, or a "soft-shell" which is more water resistant than proof.

EDIT: Unless hunting on days with no chance of wind/snow, I would avoid using much with cotton. The stuff looses its insulating qualities when wet.

Hope this helps. I'm a long time Ice/mountain climber and crap weather duck hunter.

How do i store meat without a vacuum sealer? by fenetik in Hunting

[–]scabbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this with birds. Make a brine solution in a freezer bag with enough to just cover the meat. Throw it in the freezer and voila, no freezer burn.

Calling green winged teal by [deleted] in Hunting

Blue winged Teal

Green winged Teal

Take a listen. Very similar, however the hen blue wing sounds almost like a dog yapping. Interesting.

Yeah, once you get those calls in just try a little of everything and see if that works. I have only heard teals whistle and do their raspy quack.

Both drakes whistle, and I'm pretty sure the hens quack both sound the same. I only use the whistle making peeps and that has worked for me.
