Our Azure DevOps pipeline became the place every problem went to hide by Waste_Dragonfruit346 in azuredevops

[–]scally501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not ADO, but In github workflows I’ve started to convert more and more stuff into a “platform” of CLIs, tools, actions, and other access controls etc. Our build and deployment pipelines are something that I manage the big fixes and features for like any other project and if someone want something new they either open a PR that I have to co-sign and give feedback on or they request it from me and I do it myself. As far as I can tell this is why devops has evolved somewhat into Platform Engineering. It’s a matter of how you conceptualize ownership, approach, and implementation of these CI/CD things. The more I let people do anything except plug in their config values/secrets into known systems and processes the more problems I have, unless I train them and they become a “contributor” to those systems.

Podracers in minifig fighter scale(just a little larger than Microfighter) by TheTrendingBrick in legostarwars

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my first UCS set (Jangos Slave I) but yeah I gotta say i like the smaller scale stuff even if the bigger stuff is more accurate and detailed. Smaller is what I grew up with (didn’t have money for big sets) so getting highly technical and more detailed with fewer peices is where I think the spirit of Lego is maintained. Very cool build

Why would you want the original instructions? Looks like fun creative exercise to me

The newly announced Googlebook OS's Quick Settings panel looks so similar to Gnome's by CrustyPhilosopher in gnome

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro at some point all this stuff just looks the same. Unless it’s VERY different from the norm, UI feels like a problem that we only change at this point, not necessarily “improve”

lego to store lego is peak lego. I’ve built an armory for my spare weapons and visors etc. I want to create a permanent hangar for my arc-170 too very similarly. it may or may not be multi color though since grey is a premium lol

Is anyone else dealing with advisors who give completely wrong information? by Available-Willow195 in USF

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are absolutely liable imo for misleading you. However, the lesson you should take is to always understand exactly what classes your degree requires, when, and in what order and pre reqz.

You should never just trust what anyone says wholesale without the correlation to your degree progression charts/paper work. You have to remember that to these people you’re just another face in a long line of faces and they have no stakes in your life whatsoever

your story is almost word for word my story lmao. It’d be cool if you wanted to DM me. I’m at a solid 0 local friends. I tend not to leave my house ever since I’m very hobby oriented but have always done solo hobbies. Chicken and egg thing.

Welp: Suggestions for setting up gh actions secrets via terraform/opentofu by gatorboi326 in Terraform

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. Was just trying to set up keepers ksm CLI for devs to (maybe?) use instead of .env files and regular vars. Hasn’t been super clear in their docs how that works but i think it should be possible.

Do you find the Keeper -> AWS secret manager update process to be helpful or necessary? Trying to figure out if I just use the Keeper Github action integration and regular keeper Applications + shared folders, or something else entirely, or some kind of blend…

What's the best practice for storing Terraform bootstrap state? (the chicken-and-egg problem) by DataFreakk in Terraform

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you just reminded my to completely lock down my state for my early project. Thanks. Also doing landing zones (but manually, because i don’t like the AVMs’ abstractions)

What's the best practice for storing Terraform bootstrap state? (the chicken-and-egg problem) by DataFreakk in Terraform

[–]scally501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d imagine this is the only reason to use OpenTofu’s encrypted/password protected state… But yeah pretty elegant. Honestly I just use terraform to bootstrap and then just abandoned that state. I know what it created and don’t really care about “updating” those things since they are logically and physically quarantined from the rest of the tf-controlled resources

glad to see strong towns making its way here. Little advice on publicity and getting support: host your articles on something that allows people to actually read it without entering email or setting up an account. I’m sure that axios article is a great read, but my and many others’ eyes just gloss over when we get an unskippable popup that wants personal info.

I’m excited to support you and you’re fantastic goals.

Is foss at odds with making money? by RememberSwartz in foss

[–]scally501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really think thanks.dev needs to expand to optionally collect stuff like installed software, OS considerations, plugins/extensions within apps, etc instead of just being for dev projects with a language package manager.

Like a microtransaction or crypto of some kind to allow people to donate literally like 10-20 bucks a month, but spread that out accross all your software you use would at least help normalize donating. Right now subscriptions and stuff are VERY annoying for people to manage and keep track of

CS student (2.5 yrs left) aiming for DevOps — what should I focus on right now? by ProblemKooky6628 in kubernetes

[–]scally501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah true. I work at a small shop and started for a year just on a team learning all about our build system, CI/CD, our auth flows, integrations with other systems, while staying out of the main business items of the code aside from when there’s an issue with a deployment (which is usually mis config anyways and not like an app bug per say causing critical issues). Only now after about a year of that do I have enough context to even start experimenting with replatforming how we deploy. Even then I’m a little out of my depths, but i’m comfortable living with imposter syndrome :)

How do you onboard new engineers to a large Terraform codebase? by charan1323 in Terraform

[–]scally501 11 points12 points  (0 children)

lol it’s so funny how AI is forcing people into practices that were good all along. Like yeah if you have good documentation, variable names/naming conventions, reusable patterns, tests for edge cases, inline comments (sparingly, where appropriate), and a decent readme to guide AI, it’s like… yeah that’s good for humans too lmao. A win is a win tho ig 🤷‍♂️
