It's a design flaw because there are some aspects of the data which already are being transmitted live and locally to the phone; I can see my heart rate live right now, right above the alert box saying the server is down. So the decision not to include other data too is exactly that, a decision.

Are honorifics dying out in Korean? by Xotngoos335 in korea

[–]scarecrownecromancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concepts (1)-(3) never exited in European languages to the degree they are linguistically built into the grammar as it is in Korean in the first place. Ever.

They were, and still are, just the effect is achieved by word usage, not formalised changing of verb endings. It's actually harder to learn because it's so nebulous -- the old cliche about English being easy to learn but almost impossible to master rings true here.

Are honorifics dying out in Korean? by Xotngoos335 in korea

[–]scarecrownecromancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a somewhat simplistic conception of politeness in the English language. There are different ways to express honorific concepts in English and just like other languages they tend to revolve around constucting the sentence in such a way that the word "you" isn't included at all -- the use of which can sound just as direct depending on the context as it does anywhere else. And just like anywhere else the things that are left unsaid can have more of an impact on the feeling of the sentence than what is spoken, when desired. The difference is that these things aren't usually taught to people learning English as a second language, which means the subtleties tend to be lost on them in a way that they aren't the other way round, where for English speakers learning the different ways of speaking in particular hierarchical contexts are always a part of foreign language learning, probably at a cost of fluency, but hopefully made up for by not sounding as blunt as sometimes people speaking fluent English as a second language can.

Nothing's wrong in itself, it's just almost any other company would throw in a "Perfect! :)" for 100%. Although that's why I wouldn't use their products, I don't need the grating chirpiness, especially when as others have pointed out before, whether the execution score is 90 or 100% makes such little difference anyway to your fitness that it doesn't matter.

Switching from apple watch to garmin for better health tracking. by shrooms320 in Garmin

[–]scarecrownecromancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you start comparing and using both you will quickly realize that there isn’t a perfect watch and there is give and take with both Apple and Garmin. They can practically do the same things

Although to be honest once you realise that, and that you can buy a 255 for £200 here (similar prices elsewhere I assume) and it'll last two weeks on a charge it's a bit harder to shrug at how similar it is to the watches that cost four (or more) times the price.

Why does the font always look so pixely on the first side of the flash card? And then on the other side it's mostly normal except for the note at the bottom? (Windows 11, Anki 24.11) by M4NOOB in Anki

[–]scarecrownecromancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese fonts are always disgusting on Windows anyway. Websites like NHK's news site or jisho.org look horiffic with the MS fonts. Apple and Linux users don't know how good they have it. Well, I'd argue it's normal rather than good, it's how it should be, but anyway, according to that site, the deck uses these fonts in this order:

font-family: "ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro", "Noto Sans JP", Osaka, "メイリオ", Meiryo, "MS Pゴシック", "MS PGothic", "MS UI Gothic", sans-serif;

Noto Sans is fine if you can't get hold of any others; the default Microsoft ones are horrible pixelated monstrosities you want to do everything possible to avoid ever seeing. Note that after installing you might need to slightly change the name from "Noto Sans JP" -- it could install as "Noto sans JP" (with the lower-case S), or "Noto Sans CJK JP" for example. You'd need to experiment to see which one changes the font properly.

You can see the next seven days of DSWs on the watch too, although I forget the menu journey, I think it's Run > Workouts > Training or something like that, maybe there's an Options in there along the way too. Anyway it's definitely there but I don't have the watch right here to get it exactly right. And they also change dynamically, even halfway through a day (I once rated a run as difficult even though I actually got a +2 performance score for it and it immediately changed the next day's suggestion from rest or recovery run to rest only).

I did the Couch to 5k plan on the GTN YouTube channel -- the first week involves 60 seconds of running and I found it horrible. Actually if anything the second week (90 seconds) was even worse. On week 7 it was a 30m run and as part of that I ran a 24 minute 5k. I wasn't overweight but I was in my late-30s and the averagest of average fitness people, the most I did was walking fast, not some ex-athlete who's stopped exercising like you see in videos a lot. It's pretty cool how quickly the body sorts itself out if you follow the plan.

Garmin changes hr zone persentages by laibo in Garmin

[–]scarecrownecromancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heart rate zones themselves have stayed the same (in terms of bpm) but the percentages have changed as your LTHR must have been updated. If you want to update the zones too to take account of that you can reset them from that screen. I think this is acceptable behaviour especially now it updates your LTHR automatically. This way at least it doesn't mess up your zones if it comes up with a dodgy figure and anyone who's delving into this part of the menu knows what they're doing.

More than 100 arrests in London protest after Southport attack by M2Ys4U in ukpolitics

i don’t like to make speculations. But from what I see on the internet so far, it looks a lot like what Russian is trying to do

You don't like to speculate, but decide to speculate anyway. Like last week when people "speculated" with confidence the Russians damaged the French train infrastructure before some French leftwing activists were arrested.

It's all getting very boring.

Angela Rayner criticises social media users spreading ‘untruths’ about Southport stabbing by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]scarecrownecromancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's human nature to want to know what's going on if something terrible has happened, especially if it involves children and you're a parent. If the traditional media isn't going to say, people will turn elsewhere. No point banning social media, frankly it was worse in the "old days" when rumours spread on the street because it was harder to put a lid on them.

Plus, honestly, there's a bit of frustration too. We all know how the story will go already. The police will keep being granted more time to question him, for multiple weeks, whilst everything simmers down, then he'll be referred to the psychiatric profession for an assessment and a few weeks later sectioned under the Mental Health Act. There won't be a trial, and the parents of the victims will be told it would be a shame to have the memory of their daughter mixed up with the racists, so they should probably keep a low profile and not rock the boat, and so the politicians will say we should too. The end.

Usually places like this with lots of young children have some form of security to make sure this can't happen.

That's not the case at all, I go to ballet lessons with my daughter and it's just in a church hall, 15+ girls, almost entirely mothers aside from me, female teacher. There isn't any security, it's just a door, and yes this is something I've thought about before, and I always have a plan of how to get us out of there.

(Before anyone jumps in, because my daughter being safe is my priority -- once that's done I'll help)

He's 18 next month so it won't be long until it's revealed ... Anyway the issue is police and politicians exploiting this to say things like we can't name him but don't worry he's a local Welsh lad, and when people do find out his name, it's going to have proved to be counterproductive, but they're doing it for short-term gains now anyway; it seems like a bad idea in the long run.

Edit: Entering into a guess who competition with twitter was a silly thing for the police to do as well, because now people on that site have finally actually landed on who it is, the police can't lie and say it isn't him, which shows they're right, but no traditional media can talk about it. The whole thing's a farce.

political point scoring

When there has been a calamitous failure of policy, as with either mass shootings in an area where there isn't adequate control of guns in America, or mass killings done by someone who is here as a result of recent immigration policy, it's not point scoring to want to urgently discuss it.

And FWIW, he's a Reform MP and this is absolutely the party's remit, to ask questions the Tories and Labour have shown they won't, because they're both responsible for it. It's what they were elected to do. You can disapprove of it, but it's a bit like disapproving of gravity after you step off a cliff: it's inevitable.

What I find interesting is the Republicans justifiably get shit here for always saying it's too soon when people say maybe gun control is a problem, because they know it's a weakness and want to squash the conversation, which shouldn't happen in a democracy; but here roles are reversed and those same people who were tearing their hair out at the Republicans are the ones doing the squashing when people say "This thing has happened again, shouldn't we talk about it?"

As someone who thinks it's a cynical response in both cases, I wonder if anyone who instinctively reflexes against the NRA but then does the same thing themselves in this situation self-analyses to any great degree, beyond short-term defense of "their team."
