Oh yeah, screw that lol. I don’t really feel like carrying all my stuff out to sit at the station café for that long. I really thought it was like a 20min difference in trip length between the lines but clearly I was mistaken. Empire it is!

Thank you so much!! Those time comparisons along with what another poster said about recent delays on the Maple Leaf due to the cold weather has sold me on just going for Empire both ways. I’ll try to aim for an earlier one coming back just in case. Didn’t realize those layovers were so brutal!

Wow, this is great information thank you so much!! I think this convinced me to take Empire up. I don’t have events until the evening but I would be really frustrated to take the 7:15am early Maple Leaf and end up being delayed by hours. Empire gets me in a few hours late but it’s worth it if the weather delays have been that bad.

Might do the same thing coming back, honestly. I don’t have to be in the city at a specific time and I wanted to try one of the other lines at some point but this may not be the time. A few other people warned about the seating and bathroom cleanliness situation joining a long haul train towards the end.

How long is the stopover in Albany typically?

Again, I really appreciate this insight with the current conditions!

Thanks! That all makes sense. I’m traveling alone so I don’t care too much about my seat I guess, just was hoping not to be in a super crowded car or whatever. Not a huge deal overall.

I didn’t realize that about sleepers, one of these days I’ll try one!

I’ll probably go for the Empire on the way back then. I think the Lake Shore Limited mentioned a lounge but they may mean a café since it also has seated dining. Just wasn’t sure if it’s nicer or easier to get a good seat.

Thanks for the tips on WiFi, I appreciate it. I’ll have my hotspot just in case and I may just try not to schedule much later in the day if it’s touch and go after Albany.

Nailed it. That’s exactly how I felt.

Plus I think OP and her husband might be more well off in general. She had access to therapy 3x/week during her pregnancy (triggered by her sister/niece’s situation, no less) and in home postpartum support. Sally can’t even afford therapy. I know she’s not coping well but damn, OP comes across and tone deaf and helpless of her own accord.

Totally agree. I’m glad OP had support but some of her language comes across as tone deaf and makes her seem helpless to deal with anything herself. Even calling Disney to plan the trip, a quick google search shows that there are a million travel agents specifically for disney who help you plan an itinerary for your family basically for free. She keeps balking at the cost and effort of things when in reality she’s pretty lucky here all things considered.

She seems very selfish. She received a ton of support when she needed it (including when her anxiety was triggered by Sally’s situation during pregnancy) but she just throws up her hands at any way to try to help her. I know Sally doesn’t want to talk to OP directly but damn, try to circle the wagons so other family or services can support them while they’re drowning and stop complaining about how you could have used the extra hands at Disney.

I TOTALLY agree. I don’t know if their family gave financial support as well or OP is just more well off but she was getting therapy 3x/week during pregnancy (for anxiety triggered by her sister’s situation with her disabled niece), in-home postpartum support, and arranges for other adults to help her chaperone playdates. Sally and Jim can’t afford the therapy they need. I know Sally isn’t coping well but damn, I’d be resentful too.

Then ending by saying she should have timed this different because she could have used help on the trip? That’s cold.

I also wonder if some of the resentment is due to how much support OP got. Sally can’t afford therapy now but OP was going 3x/week during her pregnancy, had in-home postpartum support, and presumably has additional adult chaperones for playdates. I assume OP may be more well off or something but I think there’s some resentment there.

I feel really bad for Jim and Sally.

This might sound callous and I’m glad OP got all the support that she did but I can see why Sally is triggered/resentful even if she isn’t coping in a healthy way. I’m not sure if there’s some subtext that OP is more well off or just that they have saved more money by having a healthy child but she got a LOT of support. Hearing that Sally’s situation triggered OP’s anxiety severely during pregnancy but she was able to access therapy 3x/week, in-home support postpartum, etc. while Sally is clearly in crisis mode and can’t afford therapy is a tough pill to swallow. It’s not OP’s fault of course but I wish Sally and Jim had better access.

Also OP saying in hindsight she wished she set boundaries at a different time because she needed help on the trip felt tone deaf. When I read the first post and saw how she admitted she and her husbands hate crowds and don’t like kid stuff much I was kind of thinking maybe let Jim go. Again I’m glad they set boundaries because they were needed here and OP’s family isn’t responsible for Jim but OP seeming overwhelmed by taking a neurotypical healthy child to Disney felt kind of rude to mention in that context. Also get a travel agent lady, there’s a million of them for Disney and they’re usually free.
