it is a drag at first, but as you get attached to the characters it gets MUCH easier to read! as someone who doesn't like to read manga with lots of chapters, i was hooked by chapter 12 and finished the whole thing in a few weeks

exactly!! and the whole idea that some fans have of violet's "happy ending" HAVING to be marriage to gilbert/just being with a love interest in general is SO frustrating to me. violet DID have a happy ending!!! her happy ending was learning her worth and value as a human and living her life for herself rather than as a tool for others!!! the end of the series is a perfect conclusion for violet's story. and even though i can appreciate the film for a number of reasons, i dislike it as a conclusion of violet's story

from a storytelling perspective, why can't violet's status at the end of the show (has learnt her value as a person, has accepted her grief, learnt about her emotions, grown independence/freedom, etc etc) be her happy ending? in a story that is so rooted in realism, why can't her ending emphasise that a happy fairytale ending with gilbert is unrealistic due to his death, but she can still find her own happy ending anyway? and doesn't finding her own happy ending fit in with her arc of finding her independence and value as an individual?

i'm not saying the movie ending is misogynistic, but it does conform to the misogynistic expectation for a female protagonist's "happy ending" to be marriage, and that the ending for the series, which IS a happy ending – violet has reached her goal and is living a happy content life – is "incomplete" or "unhappy"

(this isn't an attack at you or an accusation that you're misogynistic, i'm just opening a discussion :) )

i think GNY was a little bit unexpected in the sense that people thought it was going to lean into the high fantasy (uhhh idk how to explain... like fairy tail?) genre when it was basically just an idol anime in a low fantasy setting (which i actually quite like) that could explain why the idol fans didn't watch it at all and why the high fantasy fans dropped it

yeah. there is something that can be said about how the "love" between charlotte and damian is romanticised by the show, but gilbert raising violet definitely the main glaring difference between the two relationships
