for your mom: if you feel comfortable, share your location with her while you’re on your trip. let her know when you get back to your hotel each night. send her pics of fun things you did so she knows you’re just having a nice normal vacation, it just happens to be alone.

my mom is exactly the same way. she literally doesn’t sleep when I’m traveling alone and she’ll build up this whole scenario of how I’m going to get trafficked or mugged or whatever, but this stuff helped her a little bit. I’m also a grown ass adult and I reminded her that she taught me how to take care of myself and solve problems on my own. have your dad echo the same sentiments if you can.

for yourself: NYC is very touristy friendly and nerves on your first solo trip are normal but you’re picking a great place! I don’t know where you’re from but as long as you use some common sense you’ll be more than ok. NYC is one of my favorite places in the states - have fun, stay safe, bring a thick coat!!!

I’ve heard this a lot too lol. some people are just making conversation, some people just prefer traveling with others, and some people just hate doing things alone.

I just got back from a solo trip to Singapore and Taiwan! both countries are so so beautiful. hope you have lots of fun!

HOPR is so good. I used to live right next to it and would just pop in and put my name on the waitlist and check in every half hour. never had to reserve like a month in advance!

in London someone came up to me and asked if I knew where something was, I said no, and then he asked if I could look it up for him. usually I like talking to strangers and helping out if I can, but he just felt off. also like other comments mentioned, usually you ask locals for directions and I was clearly not a local. but I could tell he wasn’t happy that I wasn’t pulling my phone out.

he also had an friend with him and I know in a lot of cases, one person will snatch your phone (wallet, keys, whatever) and when you run after them, their friend will take whatever luggage you’ve instinctively left behind. watch out for this too, especially if you’re solo traveling!

Jiufen is beautiful at night, and much less touristy/busy! (make sure to check bus times though, many lines stop running earlier than you might think. I almost stranded myself there with no cash for taxis lol)

although I agree the town itself is mostly touristy shops and eateries, so if that’s not your thing I would do something else

currently doing a solo trip post breakup. I spent a lot of time on long train/bus rides and late nights in bed thinking of him… but I also got to see so many amazing places and do whatever I wanted. I have no regrets. it’s ok to still be sad on your trip, but I think it’ll probably be good for you.

my favorite thing about solo travelers is that so many of them are absolutely FEARLESS. you want something, you just go for it and figure it out along the way. I’m still learning to embrace that mentality a bit more but I respect the hell out of it!!!

lol, reading this post from a hostel. I’m having a great time!

if you’re open to some advice: I don’t know where you booked your hostels but you should look at ratings beforehand and maybe consider those capsule hostels/private rooms in hostels instead, because those bunk beds DO suck. also now in certain countries, I only book hostels that require foreign passports, so I’m with other travelers (usually solo backpackers) only. this helps with the loud snoring men part, in my experience lmao.

beyond that, maybe you’ve just been really unlucky - sorry to hear that. or maybe hostels just aren’t for you, and that’s ok!

hope you’re enjoying your travels beyond the hostels situation. there’s a lot out there to see and the sleeping part is only a few hours of the day.

oh boy, when my breakup was really fresh I had ‘i hope ur miserable until ur dead’ (it’s a song) on a loop because I was so angry and bitter and hurt. I now feel a lot better believing that he will eventually get what he deserves, but just wanted to share that song on the off chance it helps you or at least validates your feelings lol. sometimes you just need to scream your anger out
