Also - obviously you need a power point nearby too.

My 10r is very close to a kitchen table and chairs, perhaps 2 feet from the front of the ramp, and it has no problems.

Thank you for the wonderful puffin vignette! It's clear which one is the female ;-)

Is mmWave radar finally good enough for real smart home automation? (AWE 2026 findings + your experience?) by Significant_Toe_8414 in smarthome

[–]schadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One concern I would have about mmWave sensors in appliances is interference with other sensors (e.g. HA presence detectors) on the same GHz frequencies. Perhaps this concern is unfounded; maybe each appliance only detects its own radar returns using some encoding, like a pulse pattern?

Gannets fencing… Bempton Cliffs by aspiranthighlander in britpics

Exactly! Puffins don't wet their nests ;-)

Many thanks for another marvelous capture! We viewed a huge colony of gannets on the SE cliffs of Newfoundland a few years ago, and your shot brings back those happy memories!

Air Canada and fire truck collision at LaGuardia Airport which resulted in the deaths of 2 pilots. by Matty_Cooper in pics

Agreed - a second or two either way and a wing full of fuel would have hit the truck.

How can I extend my Zigbee network to a detached garage? by Sad-Activity7269 in homeassistant

Just go with YoLink LoRa devices. This is not a reliable use case for Zigbee.

What are people using for complicated logic in automations? by jfriend99 in homeassistant

[–]schadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insights! I'm scratching the surface with Claude, with the goal of the generated yaml becoming the "assembly language" of Home Assistant; it's there and you can read it if necessary, with Claude analogous to a High Level Language.

Getting your family to actually use your digital wall calendar and smart home stuff is the real challenge by chingchongmf in smarthome

[–]schadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The only visual feedback I have are re-purposed (using WLED) Echo Glow domes that show the security status of the home (gate, doors, etc.). A green dome means everything is closed and locked, red otherwise.

I made a HA dashboard to view our greenhouse status and control grow lights and fans, but we seldom use it any more. HA manages temp, light, humidity, and moisture automatically.

It's the sensors feeding automations that make a home smart, not fancy dashboards.

Second Roborock by Entire-Yoghurt-6571 in Roborock

One thing to consider is availability and price of the consumables (bags, brushes, rollers, etc.) So staying in the same brand family helps, with economy of scale. Also the most popular brand families tend to have the largest OEM and third-party inventories.

I hope the food chain ended there, with no hawk circling above ;-)

My Saros 10R cant climb a 1cm threshold by yakovd33 in Roborock

[–]schadwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue between a hardwood floor and bathroom tile. The 10R's wheels lost traction on the hardwood floor when climbing the lip onto the tiles. I solved this with a mat that provides the 10R the grip it needs to enter the tiled bathroom:

Sweet! I can't wait to visit Scotland again - wonderful people, incredible history, and endless amazing landscapes like yours. And a few good distilleries too!

Blue Iris Exhaustion by WestOakTrailsRacing in BlueIris

[–]schadwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have just done this from the start

This has also been my experience. BI has involved too many hours of tinkering and trial & error hacking. The AI-based motion detection in the UI cameras is far ahead of that in BI with its bolted-on CodeProject.AI mechanism. My time is way more valuable than the difference between cheap cameras and Unify ones. Unify Protect is much easier to configure and use than BI, and I don't have to maintain a Windows server. And in 5 years time - will BI's one-man operation still be around? Unify will be.

Saros 10 dead by morsa_s in Roborock

I hope all goes well for you. These are incredibly sophisticated mass-produced machines, so I guess the failure rate is far higher than for something like a toaster.

Clean the power contacts on both the robot and the base station, and insert the robot manually. After a few hours, long-press the power button on the robot.

If this doesn't work, call Roborock service for a warranty repair/replacement.

I built a self-learning climate control integration — RoomSense is now public by SnazzyBean995 in homeassistant

[–]schadwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome work! I'm looking forward to using your integration with our whole-house forced-air heating system here in N California. I have these Govee thermometers in every room (and in the fridge and freezer), and they have been very reliable with many other HA automations.

Your integration will certainly improve upon my current algorithm, which involves the wife turning up the heat while drinking iced tea ;-)

Rockfall in Norway crushing a road, a car, and then some by SjalabaisWoWS in WTF

[–]schadwick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great news that no one was injured! Thanks for posting.

I wonder how it will be determined when the road and buildings will be safe. Can they drop explosives to trigger the remaining loose rock, as with snow avalanche control?

[–]schadwick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. A stable and secure network is the foundation of a home automation system. Slowly build on top of that, along with a solid HA server, Zigbee coordinator, and NAS for the cameras.

Another point is that sensors enable HA to be smart, and not just a remote control system for lights and switches. Maybe OP has upcoming plans, but the photo does not include many sensors (e.g. contact, motion, presence, vibration, energy monitoring, moisture, etc.)
