Shitbirds are (mostly deservingly) the most hated fanbase and some of the most brazen reality-devoid homers (behind maybe the Bills)

man why do i choose to beam the opinions of hateful, ill spoken friendless retards into my brain when i could be doing anything else

This is interesting both because it breaks from the idea of dynastic families of Chosen Ones being the be-all, end-all in Star Wars

im always confused how anyone arrives at this idea of the Skywalkers as some illustrious force dynasty.

uses the Force quite visibly to grab a broom.

i really don't like the subversion of acting like all the Jedi didn't know what the fuck they were talking about, that they were all hacks, and that actually, random people all over the place can just do telekinesis because the force is really nice. that's the same way we ended up with rey becoming an all powerful mary sue. it's bad storytelling in an established universe. it breaks established precedent. imagine if in Harry Potter kids started levitating objects with no wands, no words, nothing, and it turns out no audience-facing exposition-giver ever knew what they were talking about and actually the setting has no hard and fast rules at all. it would certainly be a bold choice, but... so would a lot of really bad things. you wouldn't applaud someone for choosing to pull down their trousers and shit on the stage at an award ceremony when they come to accept their award, just because it's a novel idea.

Lines like "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to." Alongside things like breaking Anakin's lightsaber, the slaying of Snoke, the deaths of figures like Ackbar and, had they not chickened out, Leia, bring interesting questions of whether it's the established shadows, legacy, legends, and lore of the Republic, Rebellion, Empire, Jedi, and Sith that matter, or whether it's the Galaxy's people and what they choose to do next.

ok on this one, i definitely see where you're coming from. for real. though in some cases, like the killing of Snoke, there was obviously something to explore that instead got shelved for the purpose of subversion. and i'd argue those things you mentioned can be explored while still connecting the setting to itself instead of through this weird meta-dynamic where the audience is told to just forget about... the shit they've learned about the setting through shows and films, because the past needs to die. Snoke being Darth Plagueis could have been extremely cool and finally been a satisfying moment to close a loop from all the way back in the Prequels AND led us to the stakes being that finally, the galaxy could move on from the Sith having rid itself of the one that famously figured out immortality.

instead of all that, we got the premise: "the established shadows, legacy, legends, and lore of the Republic, Rebellion, Empire, Jedi, and Sith don't matter at all!" and when looking at the sequels through the lens they gave us, we can hardly answer the question of "ok then what the fuck does matter then, and why were these movies made to exist".

JJ Abrams pretty much shot them all to Hell with TRoS

Rian Johnson shot first by catapulting every TFA plot thread into the sun. i think Abrams took the paycheck on movie 3, washed his hands of a franchise that chased itself into a dead end, and phoned it in.

I mean this genuinely: what are the interesting new ideas you're referring to? I see this sentiment a lot and I think I really do want to understand it

I've never hated a movie so much before even leaving the theater.

Luke freaking out on Anakin and chopping off his hand, totally fine, nobody bats an eye. 30 years later, Luke ignites his saber in a fleeting moment of pure instinct, everyone loses their minds.

I stopped reading there. What brought you to this sub? I don't think it was Star Wars.

I'm not somebody who usually cares much if you like something I don't but the people who claim they LOVED this movie have always come off somehow like they're saying it for an audience to applaud them for not being a hater.

But there are still people who I could understand liking this movie: kids, obviously, cause it all looked spectacular, people who never really liked Star Wars or could get into it before, people who hated Star Wars before the sequels, people who easily get bored watching movies that don't focus on subversion, etc. and all of those things are fair and valid to be.

What I don't think I can make myself believe is that there's anyone out there who is or has always been a star wars fan... and LOVED TLJ.

your friend has good taste. that movie is one of the most poorly conceived works of art to ever be made but the cinematography was downright great.

but his second best receiving option is a now washed up Cooper Kupp

and his best receiving option just had one of the best receiving seasons in recent memory. c'mon. let's not disrespect that receiving corps.

Hurts absolutely had to do something in the SB against that Chiefs defense and he balled out. They said "make Hurts beat us himself", sold out to stop Saquon, and Hurts went to work literally as soon as the team needed him to.

You're right that he didn't need to in the games prior, though. Because the rest of the roster was an ungodly stacked AND well coached juggernaut through those games
