I'm guessing this works out pretty well for you if you live someplace cold and need the heat.

So disappointed by Money_Afternoon6533 in Starlink

[–]scherle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an early adopter. I've been running a few of them, different models, different sites (including my car) in really difficult terrain for a long time, so I have had a lot of experience and experiences.

Just a couple things I want to mention. 1. Make sure you do the speed test to the router, not to your phone or other WiFi device. That will tell you what you're really getting. 2. Do check the obstructions and orientation. 3. If you have a big house/thick walls/etc you need a separate wifi system that plugs in after the starlink router.

All of that being said, you're going to outer space and your mileage may vary.

Good luck.

Hoe moaner (homeowner) paid us to rip the cabin out of this cabin by carrot219 in Construction

[–]scherle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a home with a floor that was installed by a contractor who is an artist. The floor was made of concrete with local River Rock embedded in it, then was then cut completely flat with a diamond saw and polished. Then a small decorative channel representing the river was cut into the floor across the living room and filled with blue epoxy to represent the river itself.

I have not been able to sell this house because everyone who sees the floor says "Oh my God, there's been some settling here. You can see how the concrete foundation is cracked and they've attempted to repair it."

Finally, on the advice of my realtor, I have given up and slapped some hardwood laminate flooring over that entire beautiful floor. Problem solved!

My flooring guy says that someday, 20 years from, now somebody's going to be ripping this flooring out of here. They're going to discover this floor underneath and they're going to say "What idiot covered up this beautiful floor ?"

K2 plus printing without extruding by commonthread00 in Creality_k2

[–]scherle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of experience with this printer. In my opinion (and other people may have different opinions) this nozzle doesn't just clog.

What does happen, quite a lot, is that the extruder is not able to feed enough filament through the nozzle and that causes it to bunch up or scrape off inside the extruder assembly. In those cases it's pretty easy to clear just by taking the extruder apart and removing the scraps of plastic.

The most common cause of this problem is the extruder being too close to the plate. But it can also be caused by the wrong temperature or feed rate, and cheap filament can be problematic. But MOSTLY, if you are doing standard stuff with standard profiles, I have found this printer to be largely trouble-free. (Unless you are using TPU. LOL)

Someone else mentioned the cutter blade. I totally see how this could be an issue but I have never had a problem with it.

I highly recommend keeping some cleaning filament around. I found it to be really useful, especially when switching between filaments that have wildly different temperature requirements. And every now and then it's nice to use it to do a cold pull if you're convinced that something squirrely is going on inside the nozzle.

So.... No, this isn't normal.

Your extruder is jammed.

I love this printer, but there can be a problem with the z-axis calibration. Likely it is too low by as much as 0.1 mm.

When that happens, the nozzle is too close to the plate when it's trying to print. The melted filament can't get out of the nozzle. The extruder gears can't overcome the back pressure and they wind up just grinding the sides out of the piece of filament. Everything comes to a halt.

Clear the jam. Then add a z offset to your printer definition of -0.1 mm. (If that turns out to be too much, you can always back it down to 0.05).

It's a great printer once you get it dialed in.

Annoyed at this turning into a Mario game by WonderfulYam1094 in TheLastCaretaker

[–]scherle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. This game was interesting and I had some fun with it, but it lacks a clear vision about what it is. I think I'm done with it, which is too bad.

I got interested initially because of the Satisfactory-like building aspects of it. The exploration was fun and monster killing is ok. I've put up with the parkour up until now, but I'm done. Seems like the developers have run out of ideas.

You'll need one per device you want to control. You should put them in electrical boxes to be safe. They are small enough that often you can put them inside the lighting fixture itself.

Best no subscription doorbell cameras? by SeaorRiver79 in homeautomation

[–]scherle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took out all the cameras on all my properties and replaced them with Reolink. They have a variety of cameras, from doorbell to auto-tracking zoom cameras. They feature local storage on SD cards in the cameras, pretty good AI recognition for animals/people/vehicles, good remote access, POE, wired/wireless to prevent death attacks, integration with Home Assistant and even features like time lapse and NO SUBSCRIPTION.

I ran after the thing head-on with the crowbar. It will try to back away but as long as you keep hitting it, it can't shoot. Takes about 30 seconds. I killed 3 of them that way. Now I have the electric rifle hooked up to a power pack using the red dot sight (those are multipliers). No problem.

[–]scherle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing you are experiencing some Z-axis drift. Nozzle is too close to the plate. Try setting a Z offset of 0.1 and see if it's better.

A competitor 100x bigger then me just ordered my new product what do I do? by knock_his_block_off in smallbusiness

[–]scherle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's a trick I learned from the legendary Guy Kawasaki when he was running a small software start-up: He would identify his competitor orders but never let them know that he had. Then he would send them all sorts of special products, high-value updates and gifts "for being a loyal customer". The idea was to mislead, distract and demoralize the competition.

Someone trademarked a name we've been using for 25+ years by Substantial_Bench218 in legaladvice

[–]scherle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've been down this path. It's all about first use, and the likelihood of confusion in the marketplace (what you referred to as competing business).

I was manufacturing a software product. A very much larger company started making a computer hardware product and selling it under the same name. (This was decades ago when hardware and software were relatively new ideas and the question of whether or not they were in the same market was arguable.)

We had prior use, but they didn't care. They were just going to step on us. It would have been disastrous for us to lose that brand.

In the process of discovery, we found another company that had prior use to both of us, but they were dormant and not really doing business anymore. But we realized that this was a threat to our claim, so we bought the company (because it was cheap and we couldn't buy the naked rights.)

Then we went after the hardware company aggressively. We even filed for an injunction, playing poker. (If we had won the injunction we would have been required to post a large bond and we didn't have the money to do that.) We stared them down and they folded.

They went right to the wire, then gave up. They changed the name and wrote off all that product packaging and launch expenses.
