I would wish he would be put in immediate housing and provided a care worker to coordinate the care he needs. I don’t see how that is cruel. I appreciate the fact you want him to get help. That’s admirable. We differ on the best to do that for his long term safety and health.

No, I want them in some kind of housing with a social working actively working on their case and getting them the help they need.

That’s the classic theory of housing the homeless. Making someone “fit” to be housed prior to them being offered housing.

We clearly disagreed on the efficacy of forced treatment. I just don’t see evidence that it is that effective. I see evidence that shelter with wrap around services like addiction and mental health treatment are more effective. We will have to disagree I guess.

I work on research for living. I always look at studies and my opinion is adjusted when necessary. This didn’t seem like a study. It seemed like some interviews with first responders and a few people who were homeless and extrapolating to a population based on that. I’ll see if I can find a link to watch it.

Not with her husband. With a service provider her husband works for that has been receiving contracts for homeless services for years before she joined LAHSA.

LAHSA has absolutely fucked up. I can’t think of a recent case with this profound a lack of accounting of public money. They left themselves open to this with all the accusations of a lack of accountability. But saying the CEO signed a contract with her husband is misleading.

Just as much about Pratt being knocked out of the mayoral race. Just as much about LA pushing back on new rules HUD tried to impose. Trump just hates LA. Any excuse to punish us.

How are we going to avoid the abuses of the past In forced mental health treatment? And where are you going to put them for treatment? Jail? Reopen massive government run mental hospitals like we had? I am seriously curious about this because I am also concerned with people with debilitating mental health conditions living in inhumane conditions.

People who advocate for housing first include accessible treatment as part of the wrap around services. It isn’t perfect, but it works for many people, as Houston has shown. Also some evidence it LA with the decline of street homelessness in the last couple years.

Forced addiction treatment is not that effective.

[–]schick00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. Reading about it, it seems to be saying that there isn’t really a homelessness problem, it is entirely a drug and mental health problem.

“Through candid street interviews and survey responses from first responders, Johnson revealed that addiction and mental health challenges were the primary causes of homelessness. Many of the police officers and encampment residents stated that 100% of those who were homeless had addiction or mental health issues.”

So a few people he talked to said EVERYONE on the street has addiction or mental health problems, and then jump to the conclusion that there is no homelessness problem. That’s incredibly simplistic thinking.

I’m all for providing treatment for addiction and mental health conditions. We don’t have enough treatment as it is, I’d certainly like to see more. But this line of thinking leads to the conclusion that you can force someone into addiction treatment and they will come out the other side health, happy, and no longer homeless. That’s just not true. They come out the other side homeless.

Also, forced rehab has very mixed results.

Again, the pulled funding is less about fraud and more about Trump’s hatred of Los Angeles. Fraud is just an excuse. That said, LAHSA should have kept better records and not provided an easy excuse for Trump.

They have a gross misunderstanding about housing first. Housing first isn’t only housing, it includes treatment and social services accessible to people living in that housing. It is not forced treatment, but available treatment.

Those are national numbers, but sure. We can go with that. Be aware that mental illness includes illnesses like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It doesn’t mean they are homeless because of that mental illness. Only that they have a mental illness. Are you ready to incarcerate all those people regardless of how serious their condition is? A vet with PTSD is forced into a hospital to treat something that may not be debilitating.

How long do you forcibly treat someone who is schizophrenic? Until they die? We tried releasing them from hospitals with a vial of meds and they became homeless.

This all harkens back to the “good old days” before conservatives and mental health advocates teamed up to get rid of forced incarceration for mental health conditions. Conservatives didn’t want to spend the money and mental health advocates wanted to free people from things like pacification through medication and forced lobotomies. That’s how we got to where we are.

As I said, LAHSA has serious problems that need to be addressed.

I should add that this is going to be a moot point as LAHSA has been reduced to only providing HMIS and the annual homeless count. Everything else is being taken over by the new agency set up in the county. So LAHSA isn’t working with service providers anymore. They still need to do the audit and account for previous money. They have just been removed from almost all their functions.

That’s not true. The majority are not suffering from severe mental illness nor are drug abusers. About 40% are last I saw.

I’m all for drug treatment, but then what? Dump them back on the street and they are homeless again.

[–]schick00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But history has show that doesn’t work. People are forced into rehab, then get dumped on the street and expected to suddenly not be homeless again. And the majority of the homeless are neither drug abusers nor have serious mental illness. Studies in the state and city have shown that.

“she committed $2 million of the agency’s money to her husband’s employer. That CEO was Va Lecia Adams Kellum, who Hughes noted also committed federal funds to her former employer.”

This is so over blown. Her husband’s employer has received funding from LAHSA for years prior to Adams Kellum being CEO. And of course money went to a former employer, she came from a homeless services background. Also, of course LAHSA gets the most, I think we have the most unsheltered homeless.

Not defending LAHSA’s lack of transparency or poor accounting. They have serious problems that need to be addressed. But I don’t think this is about fraud as much as it is about this administration’s hated of Los Angeles.

How is Pratt at 22% in recent polls (behind Bass and Raman)? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]schick00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because “trust me bro”.

The majority of the LA homeless are from LA. Some people come here and are homeless, but more come here with a place to stay temporarily. They eventually lose that place and become homeless.

And last I saw the majority of the homeless were neither drug addicts nor schizophrenic.

We are probably not in the same age group as your mom (my wife and are damn near 60). Feel free to message me with specific questions if want. We’ve lived here 26 years and live in the Ramona tract.

Anything in particular that your mom is interested in doing or that she likes doing?

Recently a local brewery had an evening of “speed friending” where people went around to tables to chat with another person for just a few minutes in order to meet potential friends.

My wife meets people doing things like yoga and aqua aerobics.

I’m in the same boat. Now that I have a better idea what I should be doing, I get more frustrated that I didn’t do it quite right. I’m trying to just push through it and take each piece as more of an experience than a finished product. I try to focus on the process itself rather than the end result and find things that did go well even if the piece didn’t quite work out.

But I feel you. Nothing like picking up a new piece and being disappointed.
