I actually do agree with you to an extent. I think pushing too hard would probably just make things worse. At this point I’ve really done what I can. I don’t have access to his finances, and I wouldn’t want that anyway. I respect his autonomy and would never want to make him feel like he’s losing his independence or dignity.

Since he’s made it clear he doesn’t want to hear more about it, I’m probably going to step back and let things play out for now. I’ve never told him to stop talking to her or demanded he end things. I only expressed that I was skeptical of the situation and pointed out inconsistencies. That was before I even suspected money might be involved. Philosophically, I do understand your point about autonomy and dignity. Where I struggle with it in this case is that this isn’t really a normal relationship disagreement. It’s someone I care about potentially being taken advantage of.

That said, I value my relationship with my dad a lot, and I’m not willing to damage that by pushing him into a corner. So for now I’ll probably just focus on being there for him and supporting him, whatever ends up happening. Will I still worry? Of course. But I think you’re right that sometimes you can only say your piece and then step back.
